but seen where he got it from this morning so sorry about the bad scoop. And yes ecklund is a joke around these parts. Oh well, at least I was able to sleep in ignorant bliss last night believing that something may actually be done about the crease.

I don't know about you

But I got really sick of watching Toews get crosschecked after the whistle, get his skull punched, and get dragged down to the ice while his idiot teammates like Hossa, Frolik, Stalberg, and even Kane stood there watching. Last night I really missed Byfuglien, Burish, Eager, Ladd, Versteeg, Brouwer, Fraser, and anyone else from that team who would actually stick up for their teammates without thinking twice.

Sorry about getting all nostalgic.

Well … OD was the extra man in on that play who defended Toews, and we got the extra penalty and they scored on it. I’m with you in spirit, but you gotta pick your battles, and pick when you should be fighting them.

Well said!

Teams seem to be looking to get physical with Toews – maybe it’s the injury – but until The Hawks respond as a group it will keep happening.

The extra penalty was a garbage call. Should have been on the Sharks or have evened out.

Our special teams

are the wrong kind of special. And with the personnel we have playing them … well, it makes me sick to my stomach that they’re performing the way they are. I couldn’t watch the final two periods last night, but I have to say, it didn’t surprise me to wake up and see us 0-3 on the PP and 2-5 on the PK.

At what point does the coaching staff say, okay, ya, what we’re trying to do isn’t working, maybe a change is in order. I mean: FUCK.

Glad I went to sleep early last night

That was aggravating to watch the highlights. Crawford out of position and swimming in the net, the defense laying an egg numerous times on the PK and TURNOVERS (definitely not the delicious kind). Looks like we scored a few sweaty goals but with all of those penalties how do you establish a flow in the game? Better win tonight damn it.

Where you goin? Nowhere!

Can anyone explain the visor fighting rule to me?

I remember Montador getting pinged for it, then I see guys on the Sharks start shit with visors, the Phaneuf/Hartnell fight the other night has visors, etc. Is this just something they call when they fucking feel like it or are the rules that unclear?

by SludgeFeast on Feb 11, 2012 7:18 AM CST reply actions

What you are talking about has two parts that must happen to get an additional penalty

1- The player must be an instigator 2- He must have his visor on when instigating the fight.

46.6 Face Protection – If a player penalized as an instigator of an altercation is wearing a face shield (including a goalkeeper), he shall be assessed an additional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Should the player (including a goalkeeper) who instigates the fight be wearing a face shield, but removes it before instigating the altercation, the additional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty shall not apply.

46.11 Instigator – An instigator of an altercation shall be a player who by his actions or demeanor demonstrates any/some of the following criteria: distance traveled; gloves off first; first punch thrown; menacing attitude or posture; verbal instigation or threats; conduct in retaliation to a prior game (or season) incident; obvious retribution for a previous incident in the game or season.

A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting and a ten-minute misconduct.

This makes me laugh

At how bad those refs were last night.

Example A.
Clowe skates across the rink to get to toews only to punch him in the face. No penalty. Results in sharks second PP goal.

Example B.
The Bickell fight. Vlasic was the person byron hit originally. Desjardins skates across the rink, with a visor on and instigates the fight.
leads to no penalties, a def Zone faceoff and Goal #4.

To be fair Leddy and Stahlberg are at very different points in their careers

I get your point though. Imagine how much better Leddy would be doing if he started the season here in Rockford and the was called up. When Soupy was traded, Leddy was thrust into a position he was not prepared for.

Also, until recently Stahls was a disappointment. He has been hot recently but we still have a long season.

Of course none of this matters until THE STARS DO THIER JOBS!! That is what we should be pissed off about.

He benched Stals after his pass to Keith at the blue line in the 2nd was intercepted by some douche or another.

So bench one of your better offensive players due to an ill-advised pass when your team has been struggling to outscore your opponents. And frankly, if I remember correctly, Keith had the puck on his stick for a second before being stripped of it.

Like I said before the game yesterday

He needs to cut that shit out. 3 games in a row now with turnovers at the opposing blue line leading to goals. I don’t care how many goals you’re scoring. That shit HAS to stop when you’ve already got a clusterfuck of a goaltending/defense duo.

by Ban on Feb 11, 2012 9:34 AM CST up reply actions

Yup, hard to defend 3 turnovers that directly led to goals in 3 consecutive games

Hey, anyone remember some guy named Versteeg? He scored a few goals and had a rep for not getting the puck in deep, but I don’t recall him getting hosed like that 3 nights in a row. At least he never got benched though, right?

If I were Q I would be on guard for lurking Swedish assassins.
My inner meathead wonders why our teammates can’t at least grab someone while Toews is getting his lunch money beat down. I think Hoss and Fro were reliving some Chech/Slav/Yugo memories while enjoying the festivities.

by activestick on Feb 11, 2012 9:25 AM CST reply actions

Inner meathead....

I really don’t see it that way. Even the soft players like Kane should be able to hold on to another player so a teammate doesn’t get tag teamed.

I don’t agree about the Marian Hossa point, but it doesn’t deserve the condescending “a” response that people seem to throw out when they can’t make a counterpoint.

Fact is, Hossa’s little slump here is magnified because we simply aren’t getting NHL-caliber goaltending. Has anyone seen another goalie in the league this year who got caught out of his net as much as Crawford? He was literally in the trapezoid on the GWG last night.

Wow, I wish it was that simple

Goalie is just ONE issue. I’m curious to see how the players as a whole react to a new SYSTEM/PHILOSOPHY, even if it’s from the same coaching staff at this point. Unfortunately, that’s like asking John Scott to skate faster.

by radguy213 on Feb 11, 2012 9:46 AM CST up reply actions

IMO-when you have a bad goalie...

…that trickles down and starts to affect other aspects and expose other weaknesses. I know that, in truth, NOTHING is really that simple in a game like hockey but I absolutely believe that if the goalie situation got corrected, we’d start winning at least some of these games that we’re losing,

by bluekoolaide on Feb 11, 2012 10:22 AM CST up reply actions

Goalie is just one issue...

BUT a pretty major one. Even on the rare occasion Crow holds his crease he is a rebound machine and has pretty much lost his glove hand.

Of course, Q’s bullshit mind games with Bowman and his players is really wearing this team out.

by takeoff on Feb 11, 2012 11:09 AM CST up reply actions

Damn it

I agree.
If we had a goalie that we could count on to let in less than three goals a game we’d be in good shape. Yes, the PK sucks. Yes, the PP sucks. But you’re right, with a change in those systems we’d be fine.

I think the goal tender situation has all of the players on edge. Crawford and Emery let in a goal and you can see the air being let out of the rest of the team’s sails. They have no confidence, understandably, in these two guys. Hell, three goals will typically win an NHL game. The Hawks average 3.09 goals per game, fourth best in the league. They give up 3.0 goals per game, only Sens, BJs, and Lightning are worse. Yes, the D has not been great, but the goal tending isn’t helping one little bit.

A decent goal tender could end this losing streak.

but honestly, part of my comment was also a bit in wondering, somehow we made it out. Was it because the goalies finally settled down and the team figured out how to work with Nemo? Was it because the team finally decided, stop picking on the goalies and we’ll just win so it’s not on them?

I seriously can’t remember how we went from the despair of the Isles game (Minn was in that month as well) to euphoria.

I admit I am not the best when it comes to Caps and salary rules, but taking on Huets contract would not be a good thing for a team that obviously has to make moves.

by 815Sox on Feb 11, 2012 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not sure of the exact number

But at the trade deadline the Hawks will have enough space on the cap to add over 20M in salaries so Huet’s 5.2 is not relevant.

by LavalPhantom on Feb 11, 2012 11:29 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Huet's contract is almost irrelevant now.

As CNS stated above, the hawks have room for his contract and much more for the rest of the this season. What prevents you from going nuts with your cap space now is what happens next year with all the contracts you pick up now. Huet is a UFA at the end of the year so basically the hawks can pick him up for almost no cost.

For me, the big sell is

HE’S FREE!! (well, if one considers $11M over 2 seasons “free”)

Hawks don’t have to give up any players, picks or prospects to being Huet back. And they don’t even have to waive or trade Crow or Emery. There’s room for 3 after the trade deadline. Dress two and one sits in the press box.

Not sure why people have a problem with AT LEAST having another option at the Hawks’ disposal.

His career numbers

are still better than both Crow and Emery. The issue with Huet was always between the ears. Maybe his stint overseas has fixed that. (or at least postponed it for a late season Cup run) There is really no better option by trade out there right now. If you are looking to upgrade your goaltending, this is your only move.

Trade me right f@#$ing now!

by Mister Zero on Feb 11, 2012 10:23 AM CST up reply actions

Emery's career is punctuated by quite a bit of issues on and off the Ice

The Emery that we have seen the last two years has been very good. He did GREAT for the Ducks last year when asked to step in for Hiller who has serious vertigo issues. He started the season in Syracuse and them when shit hit the fan for the Ducks, he was called up and just got the job done. That is exactly what the Hawks need now.

Emery took the reigns of the team, and lead them into the playoffs.

The only issue that should be a concern about Emery is if he can hold up physically. However, he works extremely hard to keep himself in game shape. I think that is more then you can say about a few Hawks right now.

Huets problems were and are far more then a mental issue. I have no idea why you would to replace an inconsistent Crawford with an inexpensive Huet. Especially when Emery can do the job.

by 815Sox on Feb 11, 2012 10:33 AM CST up reply actions

Huet did pretty much the same thing in '07-'08 with Washington

came in late season and was a wall. I don’t recall the exact numbers, but I remember he was exceptional. I would LOVE for Emery to take over and be “that guy”. But I can’t put too much faith in a guy playing on half a hip to carry the load down the stretch of a cup run, especially the way Q likes to ride his goalies. (see:Crow last year) With the cap hit being as minimal as it will be, whats the harm in bringing Huet back for insurance if Emery can’t do the job, or if he breaks down?

Trade me right f@#$ing now!

by Mister Zero on Feb 11, 2012 10:58 AM CST up reply actions

The only problem that I can imagine

in bringing him back would be if there is a clause in the loan agreement that would allow his current team to keep him. Other than that his cap hit would be minimal as I believe it would be pro-rated for the time he is actually on the team and I think this is the last year of his deal anyway.

I like Crawford but as everyone on here can attest I have been very critical of him throughout the season. Last night’s game was the final straw for me. His confidence is totally shot at this point and I honestly think if they keep rolling him out there to play as he currently has it may do him more harm than good in the long run.

Is Emery a long term solution? Probably not, but he has played decently for the most part when he was needed. Give him the reins and let him do his thing. If he begins to fall apart mentally or physically at some point; there are worse things the team could do than bringing Huet back.

Yes I know that he has had problems between his ears which have in turn led to problems between the pipes at times, but when Mother Hubbard is moving in and the cupboards are already bare you do whatever you have to. I do think that if he were to be given another opportunity to play with big boys, the opportunity itself would be a huge boost to his confidence. Couple that with reports that he has been playing very well with his current club (yes I know it’s not the NHL) and he may be the stop gap the club needs at the moment.

I highly doubt this will happen nor am I advocating it. Just trying to look at the situation as a possibility.

2 cents.

the Swiss regular season ends soon..

however, Fribourg are currently second and therefore headed for the Playoffs.. last year’s Final series ended mid-April. So, if there is a clause (who knows?) that keeps him there it’ll be playoffs by the time he gets here.
My view, expressed by others here: if we don’t make a trade then we get Huet the heck to Chicago: he may not be a saviour but there is no downside to having him available if needed.

It's ironic

You (and I, granted) declared last season and this season countless times that Crow never showed the potential to have the season he did last year. So basically, we used a career sample to discount the results of one season as a possible outlier. Hopefully we’re both wrong. Time will tell.

Now comes Huet. He had a very good career and the two years prior to him coming to the Hawks, he was arguably one the 3 best goalies in the league. 2009 wasn’t really that bad (.909 Sv%, 2.53 GAA). 2010 was.

So Huet has had a solid career with one bad season, yet you completely flip your argument when it pertains to him. (and you’re definitely not the only one)

Maybe the same line of reasoning should apply to both goalies? One good or bad season should not define a career, nor be the measure of one’s true ability.

“the two years prior to him coming to the Hawks, he was arguably one the 3 best goalies in the league”

I just can’t get into the mood to investigate, and I don’t want to get into a stats war with you CNS. He’d been good, but this seems like a massive overstatement. He’d not even had much experience as a starter, as I recall it.

It's probably an overstatement, but it's not massive

Huet’s GAA and SV% in three seasons prior to being signed by the ’Hawks, and where it ranked among NHL goalies:

‘05-’06: 2.20 (4th) and .929 (1st)
‘06-’07: 2.81 (26th) and .916 (11th)
‘07-’08: 2.32 (10th) and .920 (T6th)

He was firmly in Nabokov, Kiprusoff, Luongo, and Brodeur territory.

Yes, except for 07-08

When he was mainly a platoon and then took over for WAS down the stretch and was lights out. The common thinking is that he earned his money with 13 starts, but that’s only partly true. He was already one of the better goalies in league before that astounding run with WAS.

I just don’t think you can get into a conversation about “one of the better goalies in the league” unless you’re talking about a guy who’s a consistent starter. He played well and accumulated mostly respectable stats, I grant you that … but so did Toskala in SJ before Toronto. Stats as a back-up or in platoon are just not comparable (imo!) to the stats of a starter.

The "platoon" can work

it has worked on lots of teams. Philly got to the Finals with a lot of it versus you guys.

But it means you have to pay money for goaltending, pure and simple. I am much too lazy, but I am betting the $$$ spent list would reflect a lot of #1’s and a competent 2nd guy. Some teams ( Van/Bos/NY this year ) having very competent 2nds.

Honest though, Detroit has spent dick on the position since Hasek, and been pretty good.

But you have to consider

that league-average Sv% in 2006 was only .901 and has annually crept up to .913 last season. So that .929 was pretty amazing. About the same as .940 now.

Here are a few good articles.

  • The first one shows annual Sv% since lockout. Interesting to check out the graphs and see how quickly Sv% has climbed.
  • The second one is an excellent read. Notice Huet near the top the 3 years prior to coming to Chicago. Combine those 3 seasons and he’s top 3. This method normalizes Sv% by comparing goalie performance in relation to the average Sv% for that season. Author’s comment:
Huet deserved his contract. He was the best goaltender in 2005-2006, 11th best in 2006-2007, and 6th best in 2007-2008. Let this be a warning to anyone signing a UFA goaltender, its easy to judge Chicago now in hindsight but their decision made sense at the time.
  • This one shows best and worst single season performances since the lockout. Same methodology. Notice Huet had the 3rd best season of any goalie (only TT better).

Also notice the list of the worst 15 performances. Huet’s not on that list, but a number of goalies who are on that list did bounce back and are still competent goalies in the NHL.

The "average goaltending" meme was true for the 2010 team

and they did win with only average goaltending, even in the postseason. This team is good, but only 2 teams have won the Stanley Cup in the past 10 years with a goaltender whose Sv% was below .920. Hawks were one of them. PIT the other. And people keep pointing to DET as an example, but in their Cup winning seasons, their goaltending was lights out.

I hope you're right about Razor

Because it’s the best plan I’m aware of. I don’t have confidence in his ability to handle the physical load of 20-25 games and then a playoff run without some injury issues creeping in.

Huet did have that great late season run for the Caps, but he was 4 years younger and conditioned to facing NHL level competition then. The baggage attached to his return, not playing in the NHL for 2 years, and his already well demonstrated psychological fragility all combine to make that route impractical and unlikely to succeed.

Once the losing streak ends, assuming it does, Salak needs to get a start, too. It’s unlikely that he’ll set the world ablaze, but it’s an asset that should be employed. There’s a chance.

I believe Crawford can get back to last year’s form. His problems can be fixed through good coaching and self-discipline, but that’s probably an off-season project. Maybe a couple weeks of Razor carrying the load, Crow watching video and getting back to his 2011 habits of sound positioning, and the problems will sort themselves out. That feels and sounds like wishful thinking, though.

Once the losing streak ends, assuming it does, Salak needs to get a start, too. There’s a low probability he sets the world ablaze and steals the job, but given the circumstances, he’s an asset that needs to be tested. Premature, but worth looking at.

In short, I do kind of think WE’RE FUCKED. We’re gonna need one of these low probability options to succeed.

More better Blackhawks, please.

Were very hesitant when he was offered that contract last. It really pissed off a lot of people on this site last year. I do not blame them, considering the Crawford that they saw last year. But sadly, this is the Crawford that I am most familiar with. Lots of non-meatball hockey fans from Rockford and the area around it will tell you the same thing. We were all surprised last year.

Basically Crawford got very hot at the perfect time last year.

It's a 3 year deal

Hawks had no goalies in the system even remotely close beside Salak. Goalies on the market that are worth a damn cost an ass ton. Salak isn’t expected to be ready until some point next year, or the year after. All these factors are what mattered when tendering that deal.

A 3 year deal for a mid-level starting goalie salary was fine for a guy coming off a .917sv%, 2.30 GAA, and being considered a Calder candidate for most of the year.

The Goalie problem is obvious

But, hypothetically, even IF that problem is addressed with more than just “we’ll start Emery over Crawford and go from there,” we’ll still have the issues w/ the PP, PK, Defense, motivation, (insert issue here), etc.

by radguy213 on Feb 11, 2012 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

The goalie problem could be a simple case of a young player trying to do too much

Cuz he knows his team is struggling. Let’s face it. This team is struggling in every aspect of the game right now. Scoring is not horrible, but the press to score is opening HUGE holes in the D, and I have to wonder if our F’s are even aware of their responsibilities on defense, or if they are abandoning their position in the ‘quest to fix it all by myself.’

When you see Hossa consistently out of position on D, is it him, or the philosophy? He has always been one of the best defensive forwards in the league. WTF? Again, is it one guy trying to do too much, or coaching?

I made it through the 80’s, I made it through 97-07. I’ll make it through this. It will get better, don’t know if it will get better this year, though.

Goalie problems are always obvious. If you have a problem on D or in the forward position, it leads to odd man breaks. If you have a problem in net, it leads to goals, as it did twice tonight.

That hit on Thornton, I loved that

And it came right after Thornton went for one of his now-patented faceoff slashes on Toews.

Is the sky falling? I'm pretty sure I felt something...

Oh wait, it was snowing last night. Seriously, goalies go through slumps just like everyone else (see: Ryan Miller’s first half performance). There have been points on this very site that the consensus put Corey in the top 10 in the league, and now the consensus seems to be that he doesn’t deserve to be in the NHL. I’m guessing the truth lies somewhere in between.

Toews is the star, captain, and face of your team, and likely injured. When he is getting cross-checked into the goal frame, someone needs to do something. When he is getting jabbed in front of the benches, someone needs to do something (because the refs apparently decided they wouldn’t last night). I know we got the extra, but that’s party due to the officials’ decision and partly due to the rather cheap-shot sucker-punch nature of Keith’s response.

Kane doesn’t need to fight, he needs to score goals. I don’t expect him to stand up for Toews. I do expect more than 20 goals on the year, and he’s not pacing much better than that right now. Anyone bring up/address the possibility that the wrist surgery he “fully” recovered from this summer has held back his shot a bit? He can still pass well, but I feel like he can’t pick that top corner like he could the last couple of years.

I wish I could be in the room when the management portion of this team (coaches/GMs) are going through what the hell is going on right now. Mostly because I don’t understand (like many of you) why certain things are done, and others are not. I think that is the most logical thing to be complaining/worrying about right now.

by ImpersonatingTheEagle on Feb 11, 2012 12:51 PM CST reply actions

i'll just post this again about kane's wrist
Kane said the biggest issue Sharp will face once the cast comes off is stiffness in the wrist. To this day, Kane has limited mobility in his wrist.

"That’s the main thing," said Kane as he held out both wrists to demonstrate that the left doesn’t bend as far upward as the right. "I can’t really bend it as much as this."

from here. So i think its fair to say its had some impact on his shot.

One year ago next Saturday

the Hawks lost to the Jackets 4-3 and dropped into a tie for 11th in the WC. Then the Captain singlehandedly dragged the team to an eight game win streak, with seven goals and seven assists. The Hawks scored just over four goals a game during that streak.

Oh, did I say “singlehandedly”? Pardon me. Crow played all 480+ minutes, with 2.38 GAA and a .915 sv%. Including a shutout.

The Hawks are currently better placed than 11th, of course, so things are not as dire as this time a year ago. But sadly, I can’t see right now where the spark is going to come from. Toews doesn’t look angry, just somewhere between befuddled and irked. Hossa appears more on autopilot instead of beast mode. The Hawks have scored just 15 goals in the last seven games, and I don’t see better goaltending turning that right around, especially if wrist injuries are part of the reason.

During the mid-January roll, I think I commented something to the effect that Q had the aura of a master puppeteer, moving the pieces in and out (remember the splash the kids made?). Now, it just seems more like desperate flailing.

Absent any major move (goalie trade, coaching change), best case I see is Emery providing some stability in the paint, allowing the Hawks to gradually pull themselves out of this, but with some rocky travelling along the way. And due to the hip, Crow will probably see more action than any of us will like.

Hey! I take penumbrage at that!

by ratbite on Feb 11, 2012 1:28 PM CST reply actions

I can't disagree with anything you say

I just hope to god you’re wrong about Crow seeing continued action (although, sadly, it wouldn’t surprise me).

I’m seriously starting to wonder though if Q survives this road trip, As much as I hate to call for a coaching change, especially when it involves the guy who won us a Cup, I can’t help but think that that might be the one thing that could possibly jump start this team.

by bluekoolaide on Feb 11, 2012 1:39 PM CST up reply actions

Hi guys,

I watched the game late last night (recorded it earlier, so that I could skip all the commercials and breaks). This was the first time that I was rooting for the Balckhawks. But the strangest thing about this, was that there were times when I felt that I am rooting for the Canucks on a bad day.Lots of skill, lots of speed, and too many soft plays and defensive break-downs.

There were times when they looked brilliant and unstoppable. But there were too many times when I couldn’t believe that this is the team that can be so scary and play so well against the Canucks.

At the end, the difference between the Sharks and he Blackhawks was their level of intensity. The Sharks looked as if they wanted this win more than your team. It is true that they have a little more muscle, but the Hawks could have overcome that with their speed and skill.
But the effort wasn’t there.

BTW, I thought that the refereeing was atrocious. Ine the scrum where Joe punched Toews in the face, I was shocked to see that the Sharks were rewarded with the power-play (and the goal).
Too many blatant infractions by Clowe, Thornton, and a few others, were just ignored by the refs.

I think that this slump can be reversed simply by good old hard work. The problem with skilled teams like the Blackhaws and the Canucks, is that there are times when they think they can win with talent only.

Anyway, excuse my ramblings…I don’t thik the sky is falling. They just need to give their heads a shake and start paying the price for winning.

Another Comment from "The Enemy"

One thing this losing streak reminds me of is game three of last year’s playoff series. CBC showed a shot of the Hawks’ bench in the last couple of minutes of the game, and the entire team looked entirely dejected. It was only when Torres wasn’t suspended when he clearly should have that the Hawks got angry and went from “how can we beat these guys, they have our number” to “like hell you bastards are going to win another game.” I see a lot of errors that have more to do with sloppy execution and mental lapses. The talent is still there to be an elite team, and I hope you guys turn in around. My only suggestion is more than the obvious problem with goaltending, but also find a way to get ticked off. Hopefully it doesn’t take a cheapshot or an injury.

by Alcibiades on Feb 11, 2012 1:53 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks for the input

I always enjoying hearing objective outside opinion, especially when times are rough.

I disagree that the effort wasn’t there though. IMO the Hawks showed skill, effort and even toughness. Plus, only one player on the Hawks had a negative Corsi (Mayers, -3) while every player on the Sharks was negative. Team wise, Hawks dominated shots and possession with a +23 Corsi. When a team is holding the puck for a large portion of the game, they don’t have to hit. I didn’t think they let SJ push them around by any means.

Therein lies the rub...

…as someone once said. I agree completely that it’s a very tough call on whether to pull the trigger on a guy like Nabakov who would, of course, be an upgrade but would he be enough to make any kind of a real difference?

I guess the key question is going to be does Bowman think this team has a shot at making a run with a different goalie. If he doesn’t go for an upgrade, I have a feeling that pretty much answers the question of what he thinks of our chances in post season.

Sorry you guys had to deal with jacktheboxbosses last night

Wish I could have given you a heads-up right away so you didn’t have to deal with it as long as you did. She’s a noted Sharks troll who hates the Sharks but makes a point of going to other blogs to say how much that team sucks in comparison to the Sharks… We don’t understand it much, either. She’s been IP banned from FTF and banned on 7 other SBN hockey blogs besides.

On another note, keep your heads up. I may hate how much Toews is mentioned whenever the Sharks play the Blackhawks on national TV, but I am super jealous of how you guys have an awesome young core that’s already won the Cup. I’d kill for a Cup. Okay, maybe not kill, but certainly do something I wouldn’t normally do in order for the Sharks to win the Cup. But seriously, Jonathan Toews is what I hope Logan Couture can become.

Slumps suck, especially when there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel. But maybe last night’s game will light a fire under their collective butts and make them come out like barnstormers against the Coyotes today. I mean, the Blackhawks killed the Sharks in the second period. What were the shots, 17-3? With one of the three really just an unfortunately deflected Joe Thornton pass since yeah right Joe Thornton would ever shoot the puck? That’s a team that’s snake-bit and facing an ex-goalie who really, really wants to win against his former team..

And if you need a goalie, we have a slightly used Niittymaki you can have for free/“future considerations.” Seriously, we have 7 goalies under pro contracts right now and were forced to lend him to the Ducks’ AHL affiliate.

Maybe that is just the issue though.

It is a vicious cycle of team needing more from goalie and goalie needing more from team. The confidence is low all over the club right no so to just expect crawford to come up with a stand on his head game out of nowhere seems about as unlikely as expecting that out of the hawks defense.

It has to be a team effort and while a big save or two from crawford would be nice so would actually playing a little defense in front of their own net.

But I have been wanting more from Crow even when we were winning.

by PatricktheGreat88 on Feb 11, 2012 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

yeah and that's fair

and like i said i don’t think he’s always fully to blame everytime, and maybe its not fair but i can’t gloss over all of his misses as being because of the team. he’s no lundqvuist, i know this, but i can’t help but wish he had some of that fire.

I think people get confused with stand on your head...

with having a team in front of you that actually is playing well too. When the Hawks run up against a goalie that stands on their head and steals a game, the other team is playing pretty well too. The problem for the Hawks is that they flat out have sucked lately with good periods here and there. You can’t expect nor deserve to get a win if you can’t string 3 periods of average to above average hockey together. What we get is shit the bed, followed by fuck you mode, followed by oh god here we go again another loss. Go back and look at the replay of the first (maybe second goal) from last night, Crow shrugged and kind of just dropped his stick as if he was like oh fuck it BOHICA moment.

by Ceros on Feb 11, 2012 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

And that's the problem - he CAN'T give up. We blame the rest of the team for shitting the bed, he has to take his fair share too

and as for last night, see CNS’s comment above, we did really well 5×5, the penalties obviously killed us, but you know last night would have been a great night for him to get us that win.

He takes way more than his fair share, that is my issue.

Everywhere you look CHI media is taking a crap on him and letting the defense off the hook.

The hawks controlled that game, can’t ask for much better puck possession. Can ask for better play without the puck and better goaltending though. Leddy is really starting to piss me off.

by lobster on Feb 11, 2012 3:22 PM CST up reply actions

there has to be a better balance though.

not talking about media, but here, because i feel like too often something gets said about Crow and the kneejerk response is “its not his fault” or “its not JUST his fault,” and the fact is he has to get his share of blame too instead of glossing it over because another part of the team stinks as well – that’s a different convol.

by justforkicks on Feb 11, 2012 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

I am talking about the media.

I think the media often uses crawford as an easy out, particularly the uneducated media. I couldn’t believe my ears listening to that bald guy on csn say we should trade for khabi.

I haven’t really noticed that a lot of people here defend him but I am certainly one of them. It is tough for me not to given the heat he is getting this year and how rock solid he was last year. I believe this kid could be something good, or at least decent, and I don’t want him to go the way of huet or steve mason.

by lobster on Feb 11, 2012 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

I think the thomas trade rumors came up before that actually.

I doubt they are shopping him now but I could see them trading him this offseason given his contract, his age and the fact that rask is waiting in the wings behind him. Also his NTC goes away on july 1st this year.

by lobster on Feb 11, 2012 3:42 PM CST up reply actions

i don't know, lately i've heard a lot of stuff about defense as well in the media

not just Crow.

He had a great year last year. I want him to be better and I hope he can be, because i like him and want him to succeed. but he’s just not the same as last year, and i’ve been having a hard time being as optimistic about him and others have been.

by justforkicks on Feb 11, 2012 3:43 PM CST up reply actions

No he's just the one letting in all the soft goals.

I wouldn’t say he gets 100% of the blame. But after the Hawks clawed back to take the lead, he decided to chase the puck around the back of the net. We could have the greatest pairing in the world on defense, but if your goalie goes for a stroll and let’s in soft goals, there’s just no much you can do about it on defense.

A perfect example of what good goaltending looks like, was at the other end of the ice. He kept them in that game.

I almost wish it was 1992

And we had to choose between Belfour and Hasek… Almost.

by PatricktheGreat88 on Feb 11, 2012 3:08 PM CST reply actions

Almost was the key word there

I love having a recent Cup Banner, Dollar Bill being six feet under, and not having fucking Detroit ruin the playoffs and destroying my childhood year in, year out.

LOL

Finally, something to laugh at today.

Thank you, sir! May I have another?

At the beginning of the year

Foley and Eddie talked about Craws’ new aggressive approach with him moving up in the crease to take away angles. Now this aggressive approach has him moving all over the crease and losing precious seconds in going from post to post.

I see several posts questioning Huet … what about Salak? Bringing up Salak would seem to follow our formula for the past couple years (bringing up Niemi and Craw during the middle of the season).

last night was his first game back from being injured for a few months

he probably needs some time but maybe an option down the road?

by justforkicks on Feb 11, 2012 3:43 PM CST up reply actions

Niemi and craw both started their years in CHI as a backup.

Also salak is having a mediocre year in the AHL so I don’t see him being much of an option up here.

by lobster on Feb 11, 2012 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

eh you never know

he’s only played 13 games and won his first game after coming back from an injury that lasted a few months

by which i mean, if we're not getting a goalie

then i don’t see the harm in utilizing what we do have – huet, salak

"Orange Mocha Frappuccino!"

by justforkicks on Feb 11, 2012 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

I can't see them going to huet.

Not only is that the final blow to crow’s confidence but it is huet, I can’t imagine Q will trust him further than he can throw him.

As far as salak goes that is possible but only if he puts together a nice stretch here.

by lobster on Feb 11, 2012 3:53 PM CST up reply actions

his stats have been pasted here before

and though they probably won’t, given our current situation i don’t see why they wouldn’t want to utilize every “weapon” we have available

honestly – his confidence is already blown, and i don’t think we should not use every opportunity we have available for fear that it will degrade even further.

I know he is lighting up the switzerland elite league

… but that league is the swtizerland elite league. It definitely takes a back seat to the sweden elite league and the khl and probably takes a back seat to the finnish elite league.

Maybe at some point you do say “why not?” but I would rather take a flyer on crawford after the year he is having than go with huet.

by lobster on Feb 11, 2012 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

the stats in the NHL I meant - its up in this thread somewhere

getting the call here could give him confidence. never know what can happen.

i’m pretty wary of hanging it all on crow at this point to be honest.

"Orange Mocha Frappuccino!"

by justforkicks on Feb 11, 2012 4:10 PM CST up reply actions

That is true

As a CHI fan it may be tough to see the upside to huet but he has had some pretty good runs in the past with other teams.

by lobster on Feb 11, 2012 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

You know what?

Crawford is doing just fine. “WHAT????” you say? Hear me out.

Of course I can’t say this because of his play on the ice. That would be absurd. No – this is about something much more important – me saving face from last season, when I was rabidly defending Turco when he had similar stats.

Sure, I like Turco – but that had nothing to do with it. I knew that at some point, Crawford’s numbers would dip, and you’d all defend him, and I was going to throw it back in everyone’s face for being a bunch of hypocrites.

But noooooo – everyone had to go and make reasonable arguments, so now of course I look like the hypocrite. Damn you all. Crawford is doing just fine.
