That Haugh piece made my eyes bleed
Consider overpaying in a trade for Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu. Help Chicago forget how much they still miss goaltender Antti Niemi by making the Sabres an offer they can’t refuse for Olympic goalie Ryan Miller. If that doesn’t work, go after more-attainable Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward. Enter trade talks aggressively, willing to deal anybody not named Jonathan Toews or Patrick Kane. Change a chemistry that badly needs to be altered.
Haugh, like a lot of reporters/broadcasters who came up covering the Bears, should have stuck to football. When it comes to other sports, especially hockey, I think I’d rather read something from Bleacher Report than his ignorant drivel. He knows nothing about the sport, instead just tossing meatballs like he’s a Cubs reliever. He claims that firing Q is an overreaction, then goes on to advocate for making ridiculously short-sighted trades, even if we have to significantly overpay.
i've had Miller on my fantasy team this year. He's played well as of late but has a been a disaster for me this year
He reminds me too much of Luongo

how so? Their numbers are not similar this year.

even overlooking the fact that a miller/kane trade is ridiculous
why do all the meatheads automatically assume that he’s even available? I realize that the Chicago way (not the one where you put a guy in the morgue if he puts one of yours in the hospital, the other one) is to immediately trade players in the midst of a down year, so is the assumption that all other franchises/fanbases are that short-sighted?

both over rated and too big of contracts.
lets face it, Lu has let you guys down in the playoffs. Was it all his fault – no. Just pointing out that if you think a high priced goalie is going to solve your problems your sadly mistaken. I would take Lu over Miller.
For every person who says Lu let us down
I point to the 28 other starting goalies who let their team down by not getting their team to the final. Lu’s contract does not become an albatross until he only starts 40 games a year. ( $5.3 million hit for a goalie with his stats seems pretty good.)
Miller on the other hand has done shit so far in his career when it comes to playoffs. Keep Crawford and let him work it out this year.

Issue number one with Rogers article
Rogers thinks
This statement immediatley makes the entire article suspect. The reading it, yeah we know that presumption is toast.
So maybe the Hawks finally have some emotional motivation… now they need a strategic fix.
Um, Hello. This should have been done January 20th not February 13th! So you have no issue with “no motivation” being addressed up until now, you think now is the time to do it!!!! Sure why not, lose 8 straight then decide to motivate your team to win right?
"He’s been taking this whole thing really well," Patrick Kane said…..And you get the feeling Kane isn’t just saying that because Quenneville gives the players a lot of days off or something else as simple as that.
I don’t know about you, but I do not want to be seeing a coach taking an 8 game losing streak well, when it started you were leading the NHL and now you are standings watching on how far ahead you are of the 9th place team. I would want to see NOT handling it well and going on a tear (see above comment on when it should have started). But to his credit some what, Kaner did mention Q has blown his stack a couple of times.
"The coaches are doing everything possible to get us ready, to get us prepared," Kane said
Obviously this is true, no reason to question this right?
Look, I’m glad the Hawks respect Q and listen to him, but RIGHT NOW the Hawks need a coach who will bring them out of this slide, not just one they like.

The funniest (saddest?) thing about the people who say Bownman shouldn't have traded
Campbell are the exact same people who were bitching and moaning about how overpaid he was and how we had to get rid of him… I wish we still had Soupy but in my alternate universe his contract would expire at the end of next year. "Watching a shootout is like admitting you watch Survivor or search the internet for porn."
I was thinking the exact same thing...
as I was reading above. They are also the same people who still lament trading Byfuglien, Ladd, etc. They simply have no concept of what a salary cap is and that, in fact, one exists. There simply isn’t any reasoning with them.
More often than not, in my opinion, their belief that Campbell should have been traded seemed more related to principle than to the amount of cap space he occupied. Now, of course with the benefit of hindsight, they want him back, salary cap be damned!
For the record, I knew Campbell would be missed but understood the trade/thought that the team needed to get deeper. Relatively speaking, few players are actually worth his cap number, and it’s pretty tough to say he is (at least any more strongly than “arguably” so).
one more thing
The people who say things like “They shouldn’t have traded _” never seem to suggest how the situation could/should have been handled better/differently.
OK, you want Byfuglien and/or Campbell back? That means that somebody else you’d rather keep has to go, AND IT WON’T BE KANE.

You mean give them a core player and two highly regarded prospects for a rental? OK.
“Help Chicago forget how much they still miss goaltender Antti Niemi by making the Sabres an offer they can’t refuse for Olympic goalie Ryan Miller.”
You mean effectively giving away most of your best minor league prospects for one goaltender? OK.
"If that doesn’t work, go after more-attainable Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward"
So now Ward is supposedly "more – attainable?" Really? Based on what sources, exactly? The sources you locate around your nether regions? Sheesh.

Today's FJM is brought to you by
The incoherent ramblings of a guy who hasn’t watched a hockey game since Flagpole Sitta was on the radio. Let’s dive in.
The question of Joel Quenneville’s job security had to be asked.
Yes, it did. You’re off to a good start, Steve. Let’s see what number of ways you can fuck this up tfrom here.
Quenneville is "absolutely’’ the right guy, Hawks general manager Stan Bowman told Comcast SportsNet. So, good question, good answer.
Yeah, I read that too. Was really hoping a notoriously cloak and dagger organization would just come out and say, “He sucks. We are going to fire him and we’re considering a public stoning by the Hull and Mikita statues (brought to you by Chase Bank).”
Besides, it would be pretty cowardly for the GM to fire the coach when the GM failed to upgrade the roster the way he indicated he would.
Do tell! Which ways was that?
That talk of a No. 2 center and a top-four defenseman has been going on since, I don’t know, forever.
Since the draft is now considered forever?
The problem isn’t Quenneville. It’s the players, both those who are here and those who aren’t.
The Hawks’ best players are some of their worst. See the power play for details.
I looked at the powerplay like you recommended here. I see a forward on the point and the same backdoor play attempted since [looks up] forever and a half.
No, wait. That would be letting the guilty off too easily. Naming names:
Oh this should be good. Let’s see what you’ve got. Just in case, here’s a link to the roster so that you know who’s on the team this year.
Patrick Kane has one goal on the trip. One. This, from a guy who can’t kill penalties or check anyone, so he must contribute by putting the puck in the net, and he’s only sixth on his own team. Kane is 50th in the NHL in salary and woke up Tuesday tied for 119th in goals.
Yup. He’s slumping right now. No doubt about it. I see you correlate salary to performance. Did you know he has 45 points in 54 games? Yeah, that’s below the pace we expect but you know what else is? His 7.0 shooting percentage. These things tend to right themselves. But I won’t be too hard on you here, Steve. Kaner’s struggling. We all know it.
Marian Hossa has no points and is a minus-6 in the six losses on this trip. Why bother?
Because he’s had point streaks of 8+ games twice this year. That’s why.
Jonathan Toews has no points in the last four losses, has only two assists on this trip, and is losing a ton of faceoffs, which tells you he isn’t healthy and stands a good chance of getting worse.
Remember when you wrote this steaming pile of crap? I do. It’s in my bookmarks. Any time I need to feel better about myself, I read the first couple paragraphs.
Oh, and Toews has been 60%+ in the dot his last 3 games.
Keith has two assists in the last six, but is a pathetic minus-8, meaning the guy who gets the most icetime gives the team the worst results. That’s Nick Leddy bad, is what that is.
Read the bolded part, Steve. Ever think there’s a correlation to that ice time and poor performance? Haven’t seen Duncan Keith getting pushed around in front of the net like Nick Leddy either. That’s on the other special teams unit. I’ll look at the powerplay as long as you look at the kill.
Brent Seabrook has two goals and two assists on the trip, which sounds hopeful until you see that he’s also a minus player.
When you lose 8 straight games, it’s hard to be a plus player. Keep leaning on +/- though. Building Papier-mâché houses on sand dunes is something you seem to excel at.
We’re going to skip your section on Patrick Sharp and I’m going do to this for you.
Steve Rosenbloom: Consistently uses one statistic, known as cherry picking, to define the flaws of a collection of 23 players. If you were a hockey player, you’d be the guy floating around the blue line in your own end waiting for a breakout pass. Moving right along.
I know the Hawks have moaned about their defensive play, but if they scored more, if they had the puck more, if they showed speed in their puck-possession game, then their opponents would be chasing, and that’s the best defense of all.
They’re 6th in the league in Goals Scored. 26th in goals allowed. You’re now skating around the red line.
And remember, this is a team that already had another Bowman acquisition at center, Michael Frolik
0_o
Funny how Dale Tallon still gets criticized around here for building a Stanley Cup winner while Bowman goes untouched despite failing to fill holes on a team in a death spiral this season and one that needed a last-day miracle to squeak into last year’s playoffs.
Actually, we criticize Dale Tallon for ignoring the salary cap and not knowing how the US Postal Service work. Stan, on the other hand, has spent 2 years with a bucket and a mop trying to clean up that mess.
But if it does, if the Hawks can’t get it done on the ice, then the question of job security ought to be addressed higher than Quenneville on the food chain.
Can I have your editor’s phone number, please? I’d like to advance up the food chain a little myself.

I think you meant to say Galaxy Home Remodeling.
I'm continually amazed when no one brings up that little fax problem of his
I loved Uncle Dale (both while he was in the booth and up in the box), but that snafu really made a bad problem positively lethal once it was done.
That snafu all but guaranteed the Cup win.
In hindsight, the inflated contracts that resulted from that screw up kept together the team that won the Cup. And I’ll gladly take that goof up and our current dilemma in exchange for a Stanly Cup win any day.
"Against logic there is no armor like ignorance."
- Laurence J. Peter
Not really
The players involved were RFAs and had no negotiating leverage. They were going to be on the 2010 team whether or not the fax snafu occurred.
Sorry, JMH, but I kind of disagree with some of your points here.
The talk of a #2 center has been going on since before the Cup run. Rosie is right to criticize that a bit. I get there isn’t a lot available and we had no money for a time, but that was basically the justification for trading Campbell, the top 4 dman we’re now missing.
The stars are slumping. The team is built to depend very heavily on its core. When they all slump at about the same time, it looks a lot like what we’re seeing. And they are playing (or trying to play) a puck possession game – the other team can’t score if the Hawks have the puck and they’ve been throwing it away like dollar bills at a strip club lately.
I’m continually amazed that people actually think the GM of an NHL franchise is responsible for licking stamps. The contracts to Versteeg and the others were higher than they would have been as a result of that, and I just can’t fathom the GM was responsible for physically getting them in on time. Yes, he oversaw this, but how were contracts and paperwork not under the purview of the resident capologist?
I give Stan something of a pass for the structure of last year’s team, given he was hamstrung by the carryover bonuses, so I agree with you on that point. Not directed at you specifically, but I just think criticism of everything everyone is writing or the team is doing is getting a little out of hand lately, but an 8 game losing streak will do that.

re:
I’m continually amazed that people actually think the GM of an NHL franchise is responsible for licking stamps.
Brian Kelly gets blame for a kid dying in a scissor lift. Tallon oversaw the signing of players. He should have sent the RFA offers out on time. He didn’t. It was a monumental mistake that falls at his feet.
The talk of a #2 center has been going on since before the Cup run.
Patrick Sharp was a pretty good #2 center during the Cup run.
The stars are slumping.
Everyone is slumping. But to circle an argument back to the stars slumping and say this team needs offensive improvements is asinine. An 8 game losing streak doesn’t over ride the 50+ game sample of a team that has scored at a rapid pace.
Rosenbloom just wants to take a run at the stars. He does it for attention. Just like that Toews garbage I linked above. Steve Rosenbloom has become Rick Reilly without the previous good writing samples. It’s all “look at me” writing and when I look, I see little substance and lots of mud slinging & finger pointing at the highest ranks he can find.
The team that Stan Bowman constructed won plenty of games in 2011. In 2012, they haven’t. Personnel didn’t change. What did?
by JesusMarianHossa on Feb 14, 2012 11:32 AM CST up reply actions
Just curious...
How far back does one have to go to find “good” writing by Rick Reilly?
I’m 33 and I can’t remember him being anything but a douche, or, at the VERY least, a cornball.
Sharp was a center by necessity, and did a damn good job.
But the organization does not appear to want him in that role. I’m pretty sure the majority of people on this site have been calling for a real 2C. It’s a legitimate criticism for a team with the cap space we have and a glaring hole that hasn’t been filled.
As for offensive improvements, they’ve averaged 2.125 goals over the losing streak. Improve the offense by improving the puck possession, which is part of his point, and the opposition has less opportunity to score. I don’t think that’s an unreasonable point, either. It’s pretty much the Hawks’ supposed game plan.
Also, I don’t see where he’s saying the last 8 games erase the previous 50, simply that the best players need to step up, and they do. I thought his column finished on a surprisingly positive note.
As for Tallon, I disagree, but there’s no real point in going down this road, so I’m just going to let it lie.
by Katherine215 on Feb 14, 2012 11:52 AM CST up reply actions
Tangential to this discussion, I know,
but the 2C comment prompts me to wonder if the Morrison thing is a microcosm of the issues that we just don’t have the fly-on-the-wall view of. (I see he is not even dressing tonight.) Sure, it was a low-risk trade, but was he acquired with the expectation that he would play 2C? Was that Bowman’s expectation only, not shared by Q from the get-go? How much did they discuss it beforehand? Is Morrison another case (Bruno? Montador?) of good players who are not a fit for the Hawks’ style of play, or of Q not using them to their best advantage?
I withdraw my questions if the Hawks win tonight.
Hey! I take penumbrage at that!
If Morrison was a viable 2nd line centre it would have cost us more than an undersized AHL defensemen. Calgary knew who he was, and so did we. I think we signed him because we wanted some depth at centre, and maybe, in their wildest dreams, Stan and Q thought he could spell us off for a game or two as a 2C or 3C. I highly doubt they thought it was an answer to anything large.
www.mjt.org
My personal guess (similar to others I believe)
Is that Bowman viewed the Morrison acquisition as a low risk flyer. If he captures lightening-in-a-bottle for a stretch of games at 2C great, if he gives you injury depth at centre, that’s fine too. They moved a guy that was probably never going to get a look with the Hawks for a guy with some tangible experience that was easily affordable and wouldn’t really prevent them from exploring other trade options (read: his salary wasn’t going to tie up much cap space).
You are next.

Hmm. I don’t understand the mess. I get why people would disagree, but I thought it was going to be something really controversial. It’s barely a thing. No, I don’t think they’re interchangeable either. My cynicism is maybe just a little more crippling than yours. Scott adds nothing. Frolik was adding nothing.

For the most part, I try to.
Some people want to complain about the complaining, which makes the original complainers complain about the people complaining about them. It’s a vicious, vicious cycle that only a win can distract from.

stop it, no.
distract from it, yes. Come on, two wins from now, the losing streak will be forgotten and we’ll be Cup bound again. People have short memories when winning, and Scott will be an afterthought.
And anyway, if he has to play, at least it’s at forward where he can’t hurt our defense’s TOI. Playing 5 mins at F isn’t much different than Bickell’s or Smith’s 6 or 7 minutes a few weeks ago.
by Katherine215 on Feb 14, 2012 1:47 PM CST up reply actions
I have zero problem with Scott in the line up
As long as he plays more than 8 minutes, which I always (in vain) hold out hope for, or he pummels someone.
If you don’t like that opinion, shouldn’t follow me on the twitters (but I doubt you do anyway)
Chicagoan in the Lou.
or he pummels someone
Except that usually leads to a penalty, which is particularly lethal with our PK unit.
If it's Jordin Tootoo he assaults
Or some shitbag who’s taking liberties with Toews/Kane/Sharp than it’s a penalty worth killing.
Chicagoan in the Lou.
When does that ever happen?
His role, if he has to have one, should be that of a deterrent. Seems now that other players are willing to make a big hit to draw the ensuing penalty on Scott, in spite of the potential beating.
It doesn't happen nearly enough
And beatings are clearly not Westgarthian enough.

See, this is the misconception about what I want
I don’t expect Jordin to be that dumb. I just want Big John to grab Jordin, say “I’m going to smash you now” and start punching. Jordin will probably try to fight back at some point.
Now, yes. This well lead to a penalty. But I’m pretty sure ever team in the league would play just a little bit harder to kill off a penalty for smashing Jordin Tootoo.

since that was posted.
If they are becoming a trap team… they’re sort of sucking at it. Maybe the preds can give them some pointers.
I'm considering watching the game with you guys tonight.
But the last time I watch an in-division game on Valentine’s Day while rooting for a slumping team that had just dropped at least 7 in a row due to dubious goaltending and under-preforming forwards, that team lost 9-1, swapped goalies TWICE, and saw their star player get injured. All this after one of the best players in that team’s history announced his completely unexpected retirement that morning.
I feel like watching any hockey tonight, especially for a team that’s trying to break a slump, would just bring bad luck.

And the best part is that Peter Forsberg is my favorite player and that night was supposed to be his grand re-debut at the Pepsi Center (he had only played 2 away games prior to it in that comeback). I had also been up for the past 41 hours straight working on an architecture project that didn’t turn out like I wanted it to, and was really hoping for a good game as a pick-me-up.

Like you said, it can’t get much worse. But given your recent slump, Nashville’s insane defense, and my slight superstition that the ‘10-’11 Avs’ luck may have taken to following your team around, I don’t want to tempt fate.

That’s the ‘10-’11 Avs for you. The loss a year ago was our #8. That streak continued to 10, then we beat the Blues, then dropped another 10 in a row.
So yeah, it could be worse for you guys. We went from top of the NW Division in December to the #2 overall pick. You guys have a ways to go before you hit the 5-26-2 in your last 33 games mark.
