Cast It Into The Fire: Hawks at Preds Preview/Pregame Thread/Fish Fry

Chicago Blackhawks at Nashville Predators, Feb 14, 2012 7:00 PM CST

KISS MY GRITS: On The Forecheck

I know, the second one is confusing. But if you're intimately familiar with the dialogue of "In The Line Of Fire" (as I am. You got a rendezvous with my ass, motherfucker!), it'll make sense. Whatever, I'm losing my mind during this streak. Hey, just like our coach!

Anyway, on to the preview. I know why this losing streaks are so hard on fans. Because as disappointing as the losses are, and as they pile up, by the time the next game rolls around you've convinced yourself that this is the night it ends. This is the night everything will get back on track. When it doesn't, you fall farther down than you were after the loss before it, and have to work that much harder before the next game to convince yourself that this will be it. The pattern keeps continuing. At this point, we're pretty much exhausted. Whether we believe the team can pull out of this or not, we quite simply just might not want to do the work to believe again. I'm not there yet, but I can see it.

I was actually surprised when I remembered this, but this whole experiment with High Speed Dirt started in Music City, with a lot of us in attendance. I thought I could set that back by going to San Jose, and we saw how that went. Like I surmised at Madhouse Enforcer, maybe this streak is the One True Ring, and it has to be destroyed where it was created. Sadly, I didn't notice any rivers of fire around Nashville, though I think Kills and I weren't too far from creating one ourselves when we were there last month.

We went over the Hawks line shuffle yesterday, so no need to rehash that. However, Qunneville went into the lab, started tilt-a-whirl, ran the liquids through the beakers, studied the steam and smoke, and came up with putting John Scott on the 4th line. Which is all he ever fucking comes up with. So yes, in a game where the Hawks have to work hard, be disciplined, and roll four lines, you're getting the useless fucking wildabeest on your fourth line. Enjoy that. Michael Frolik and Brendan Morrison will be in the pressbox with their Q voodoo dolls. I wouldn't blame them.

As for the Preds, they've fallen off that rocket to Mars that they were riding in January. They've lost four of five, though two of those came in the tiddly-winks competition to Boston and Vancouver. The one thing that jumps out at you during this month is that they've given up at least three goals in every loss. Granted, they were playing the B's, Canucks, and Flyers, all offensively dangerous teams. Then again, there was a time when we thought the Hawks were that as well. How I long for those days.

Some of the Preds struggles could be that they're featuring some kids behind the unholy force of Suter and Weber. Roman Josi (which sounds like a character from Dawson's Vagina or whatever that show was called), Ryan Ellis, and the slightly more experienced Jack Hillen were always going to have their struggles. Usually, Pekka Rinne can bail them out, but only so much if he's seeing over 35 shots, which he has been.

You could write what needs to be done from your own memory. Discipline, patience, intelligence. You can't turn pucks over, you can't miss clearances, you can't take penalties. You have to work, because the Preds are only going to allow you to chip pucks behind them. And you have to be ruthless when your chances come.

But whatever. This just has to end, because I don't think anyone can take it any more. A win keeps the Preds in touching distance. But mostly a win just reminds us and the team what it feels like. That might be the most important thing.

Let's Go Hawks.

I've been weirdly zen about this whole streak

to the point that I’m afraid of what might happen if/when I snap.

I feel the same.

Although I just realized that as of 5pm today it will have been 24 days and 19 hours since the Hawks last won a game. Not that I’m starting to obsess over it or anything…

If I had one of those time counter aps, I’d put it in here.

He said “You’re a Hawks fan, aren’t you”? – I said, why yes – how did you know?

We’re getting a lot of calls from Hawks fans lately. Turn off your TV and go for a long walk…

Why doesn't Stan TELL Q who he is going to play?

Tell that crazy fucker to play the best players (period). He works for Stan right? “I just got you this new guy. Put him in the fucking lineup.” “Don’t tell me John Scott is better than Frolik. Scott is my problem. I signed him. I pay him. You don’t play him”

We’ve been through this with Q before, but he was sitting Boynton, Burish, etc. Last year he started sitting Brouwer and now it’s Frolik and Bickell. Fuck, I can’t take these jokers anymore (Stan or Q). We don’t want a winner anymore. We expect and demand it. If you can’t get it done, step aside.

by laaarmer on Feb 14, 2012 1:32 PM CST reply actions

I kind of think they must.

If Stan didn’t, he would just waive him. If Q didn’t, he wouldn’t play him. My thought is if either of the two was less in favor of him, it would be Q and he’s forced to play him because his boss wants him to. I still lean toward both liking him though.

Lets say I'm your boss

I tell you not to do something, but you say it’s the only way I can get the job done. I relent, but say just this once. You do it again, and again, and again. I let you keep doing it. What’s the old expression? “Fool me once…..”

Q seems not to know his place. Like Ditka before he was launched. Both are good coaches, but will not be told what they can and cannot do.

I think it’s simple. Play your best players. I think Q is sitting one of the best players on the team in Frolik and playing Scott. Bid no no. If I’m the GM and the coach doesn’t play my best players, I step in, and tell him. So, Q gets ruffled, so what. Maybe he needs a few games in the press box. Maybe both of them need to sit up there together, while Havi runs the show.

Hold my stones I'm on IR

by laaarmer on Feb 14, 2012 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

not so simple

both parties have an incentive to work together, and if there’s a disconnect, they both bear the blame. But the answer is not for the GM to assume the coach’s responsibilities- there’s a reason for the different job descriptions.

We like our people!

by cliffkoroll on Feb 14, 2012 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

I did not say the GM has to assume the coaches responsibilities.

I tell him he is not doing his job the way I expect. When someone who works for you is not pulling their weight, so to say, you as a manager, have to tell them/help them. If you don’t you are a poor manager.

The title of your original comment

is, I think, a call for Stan to tell Q how to do Qs job.

I suspect Stan and Q talk about this stuff all the time. I’m sure no GM thinks his coach is employing talent in the best way, and no coach thinks his GM is supplying the pieces the team needs, and their job is to work through these issues while respecting each other’s spheres of responsibility. Anything short of this strikes me as dysfunctional and worrisome.

We like our people!

by cliffkoroll on Feb 14, 2012 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

Yes

I understand you see it that way. I know you’ve kept a special bread knife especially sharp to pull on Q when the time is right. Recently, I have begun to entertain some long thoughts about the mustachioed one myself.

But you’re recommending further dysfunction as the cure. The front office equivalent of playing Seabrook at forward.

Wrong. The 2011-12 ship is Qs to sail wherefore he will. We’ll reconvene the subject at season’s end.

We like our people!

by cliffkoroll on Feb 14, 2012 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

Seabrook would be a monster forward!

What I’m getting at is Stan has allowed Q to be insane. He allows it so it continues to happen.

Do you think Ken Holland would turn a blind eye if Helm was healthy and he was in the press box for John Scott? No, he would tell Babcock he was fucked in the head and put Helm back on one of his lines.

Stan Bowman: When I hired Q I knew Q was insane. Hold my stones I'm on IR

by laaarmer on Feb 14, 2012 2:52 PM CST reply actions

I'm confused...

Two months ago, I would have been excited about a packaging of 2-3 young developmental talent pieces (Danault, Perri, McClain, Glendenning, Olsen, etc.) to go after a key final proven player to get us another Cup.

Now, I am not sure that we are close enough to sacrifice that much given how uncertain we have become with big chunks of this current roster.

On D, we are clearly not were we need to be, calling into question both the 2nd and 3rd pairing. Our top pair can’t keep playing this many minutes. I like Hjammer and Leddy individually, but maybe never together or at this price. And we only have one guy with a real slap shot weapon from the point (#7). I

n the net, we are sub par. Not good enough. I’m not sure that it would be wise to take a Ryan Miller like player for the price…$7 M is a ton for a goalie in this league, but I sure would’ve been happy keeping #31 for $3M. How much better would we be if we had moved other pieces to the puzzle?

On O, we have great individual players in # 19, 88, 81. And really good ones in #10, 36, 25. But does anyone know how they best fit together anymore? And who else is really going to bring EFFORT night in and out besides #22?

I really hate to say this, but I am beginning to think that the wisest move would be to NOT take on more salary until we really know what we can expect from some of our big bets going forward (namely 88, 10 , 50 and 4). We are paying them all greater than the current return.

by NiemiNation on Feb 14, 2012 3:12 PM CST reply actions

Can't disagree too much with what you're saying.

Until the core guys start to step up (and Hossa returns from the witness protection program), I can’t see how adding something is going to make enough of a difference to be worth the risk.

I’m starting to resign myself to the reality that we might have to get through teh rest of this season playing the hand we’ve been dealt.

If that’s true, Stan better have a damn good plan for the summer.

I only have a small sample size so far, so the results may change

But with past arguments about shot quality, the D sucking and such I am going over a sample off 33% of the Hawks games played and documenting all Goals for and against, a usable sample for what I am looking for.

And so far in the early going I do see a trend showing (These may change as the sample grows)

The Hawks ARE allowing more Cross-Ice pass, Rebound, Scramble and Odd-man rush goals then they are scoring. So far Goals off TO’s are even. The Hawks seem to tend to score more goals from the circles, while allowing more from the goal line (or behind the net) and from the point then they score.

The sample size so far is small, but this trend is starting to emerge. This will take time to complete, since I will also sample a sum of non Hawks games as well as a control.

Dear Chicago Blackhawks,

Today is my birthday. I know, I know, it’s Valentine’s Day. I’ve received so many birthday cards with hearts on them over the years that I could open up my own specialty shop. But anyways, 27 kinda sucked, but 28 so far has been alright. I mean, the Mass Effect 3 demo came out and just finished installing, I just picked up, and there’s a cake + some cookies waiting in the kitchen to be devoured. What I’m getting at is, today hasn’t been half bad and I would greatly appreciate if you won tonight to make it all good.

Regards,
AYYHPOT.

No matter how bad it is, it could always be worse.

Even if the Hawks get blown out, 7-1 with Scott scoring the only Hawks goal. It could still be worse.

Steady yourselves. Prepare ye for battle.

First 5 minutes in this game

are absolutely critical.

0 – 0 or better after 5 and we’ll be OK.

My serenity is inversely proportional to my expectations.

Random...

Driving home, Score 670 quoting stats from SCH, (most likely the CNS fanpost) saying that goalies suck.

Get home, turn on TV – Chicago Tribune Live – Bob Foltman (Who the F is Bob Foltman?) Says that Hawks should trade Kane and 2 picks for Rick Nash – and also says this is a no brainer.

Well, the no brainer part is correct…

Going to bar for good luck – be back for the victory party!

I really dislike CTL

And how they handle their coverage of sports. You’ve got guys that know crap about hockey giving their opinions. There’s some dude in particular that mostly handles baseball and any time they start talking hockey, I cringe when I hear him. I don’t want your opinion if you don’t know what icing is.

The fat dude that talks with his hands? Phil Rogers. I can’t watch the show if he’s on and can barely watch it otherwise.

Especially when 90% of them have less talent on their roster than the Hawks do.
