Well, we wouldn't have won so handily
if they allowed shootouts back then.

"I know, Chicago will be cold, tomorrow,
Let's cash in on our thin blood and have another one."
Actually, shootouts were kind of the problem for the South
Particularly at Gettysburg. Pickett totally blew the one-on-one with the Union’s tender.
The South will never get hockey, really.

Shootouts require some fancy maneuvering
and Pickett just tried to ram past the Union netminders. No chance.

Stals with 5 minutes of ice time. Mayers with 4:35. Seabs on pace for 30 and Toews looking at a possible 24 minute game…
I really need to stop reading the TOI numbers. They’re infuriating.

from my angle
puck was shot on the ice, Emery goes down to stop it, it hits Keiths stick, and goes in between Emery’s legs. Maybe I saw it wrong but if that’s what happened then it was a soft fucking goal.
hardly soft even if that is what happened
a 90+ mph puck being redirected 10 feet from the net is pretty tough to stop…

fundamentals
If a goalie is dropping down than his stick should be on the ice. That’s fundamental and something every young goalie learns. It looked to me like Emery’s stick was no where near the ice…
But even if it was SLIGHTLY redirected
1) It wasn’t from 10 ft. It was more like 25 ft out (ahem, a distance that a shot from that length should be stopped), and
2) It still went right between his legs, not over his shoulder, or far side, etc. Positioning. Technique.
Can we agree Rinne (and quite a few others) makes that stop?

Frankly
I am getting tired of this Hot Goalie thing (not directed at you, but on the whole). Really what are the odds of hitting 9 straight goalies who are “hot” or even 5 of 9? Though last night does seem like the case, lets not let it obscure the fact of something deeper being wrong right now. The Hawks let in 3 goals to a team without an overwhelming offensive power, and allowed numerous other prime chances. As easily as the Hawks could have managed to find a way to win, they could have easily lost by 3+ on the opportunities they gave up.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Feb 15, 2012 8:17 AM CST up reply actions
The Hawks gave up 19 shots last night and barely allowed any prime scoring opportunities. Yet somehow it's the D?
You state that the Hawks could’ve lost by more than 3 in a game where they gave up 19 shots. So if they gave up 6 goals, that’s a .684 Sv% – but it still wouldn’t be on the goaltending.
Not every prime scoring chance is supposed to result in a goal. EVERY team gives them up in EVERY game.
And yes, the odds of hitting 9 straight hot goalies is rare, that’s why 9 game losing streak are also rare. On the other hand, if you look at the goalies they faced (including Rinne 3 times), it’s not quite so surprising IMO.
SCH, a softer, kinder place to comment on violent sports.
by ChicagoNativeSon on Feb 15, 2012 8:52 AM CST up reply actions
I am not talking SOG
I am looking at, at least three times a cross ice/crease pass happened right in front of Ray, with the back side wide open and a forward not being adequetly covered to redirect the lead. The redirects either missed wide (not a SOG) or the forward fanned and missed the set up (also not SOG). There were also several other cross ice passess between the circles. Ray stopped a couple, a few others missed high or wide or fanned on. These are the chances I am referring to, not specifically the ones that ended up a SOG. The Hawks are allowing far more of these types of goals then they are scoring (yes I have numbers to back this up now, just not at work). Also two of the goals against resulted off of turnovers, also another area the Hawks give up more goals then they score on. IMO these types of plays (cross-ice/crease plassess and Turnovers) ARE a defensive issue in addtion to the Goaltending issue.
So yeah, I stand by that fully, even though they did not result in a SOG, the Hawks gave up too many good scoring chances. A couple few more of those conect and it goes from a 3-2 game into a 4-2 or 5-2 game.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Feb 15, 2012 9:02 AM CST up reply actions
So, Hawks had none of these opportunities?
I remember a few, especially Keith’s missed opp, Bickell/Stalberg just missing connecting on an open net, Kruger’s slapper that gave up a juicing rebound just missing OD. I’m sure there were more. These things happen during a hockey game.
SCH, a softer, kinder place to comment on violent sports.
by ChicagoNativeSon on Feb 15, 2012 9:26 AM CST up reply actions
I AM NOT SAYING THAT!!!
Of course the Hawks did. I am still working on this whole deal, but from what I have got so far, the Hawks let in far more of those type of plays then they score. Seeing this, I kept a very attentive eye for a few things, one being the cross ice/crease passes in the low slot/crease area, and turnovers that directly lead to scoring chances. I saw more happen FOR NSH last night then I saw FOR CHI last night. Chicago got more SOG on goal, but I was mainly focused on where they were shooting from, not how many to see if they also fit what I am seeing in my numbers, the Hawks score a larger portion of their goals from the circles then they allow. I was seeing how their play was if this fit the numbers.
I still have alot more work to do to finish this whole thing up, but what I am seeing is interesting and these types of plays stick out in the numbers right now. If they hold true, then why is it so?
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Feb 15, 2012 9:41 AM CST up reply actions
Really,
My focus right now is the nature and manner of Goals against on the Hawks, not so much the Goals For. I am also catalouging them simply for comparisson, not so much analysis yet. I am still not majorly overconerned with the ability of the Hawks to score, more so on stopping the bad guys score.

there were a couple of prime opportunities
where a Predator was just a few inches from an easy goal. I agree with TMFF on this. Could have been uglier….but it wasn’t.

I’m looking for this team to play better, a win would be nice, but if they play like this the winning will come. I’m all for doing something that improves the team, I’m not for doing something just so you can say you did something.
If you must scream to get noticed, maybe you should whisper instead
Well I've never been a Q fan
and am one of those that believes the team one in spite of him not because of him. I think he has lost this team and has no chance to get them back. I think a coaching change is a must.
The problem is
They DID say they supported him over the weekend. Don’t ask me why, but it might be that they feel differently about getting the cup with him than we do, despite the clusterfucks we see on ice.

You are right mostly
if it’s clear all the players hate the coach and won’t play for him, he’s gone, the players choose one way or another, just maybe not by going to the GM’s office and demanding it.
In the hawks case, I think if Q had really lost the room and the players wanted him gone, he would be

Sure he could do that, and the reporters pick up on it and keep asking/speculating

People should try doing this themselves.
Very few people are good at what essentially comes down to impromptu lying. I am in a sales position where the client is buying the service of a strong organization. There are a couple of key people in the service who really muck the shit up and I have to explain how the product will benefit the client despite these key people. It is incredibly difficult for me to say that they are good, competent people, especially if I think there’s a decent chance my client will end up being burned by them.
So, think of someone you are told to depend on that you know will not do the things that you are depending on and then try explaining to someone else how great they are at the thing they cannot do. It’s very difficult, especially to do it over and over, because you just don’t believe it and insincerity is almost impossible to mask.
I wanted the Packers to win the Super Bowl, Megan!
he doesn't have to be sincere, he just has to be a good liar.
And in any case, what are the reporters going to do? Say Patrick Sharp said Coach Q hasn’t lost the room but I think he was lying because he seemed insincere? All I’ve seen are tweets and an article about his quote, so maybe his body language says otherwise.
All I’m saying is, we’re putting a lot of stock into quotes people are putting out there, positive or negative, and maybe everything has to be taken with a grain of salt, its not even specific to Sharp and Q, just in general.
"Orange Mocha Frappuccino!"
by justforkicks on Feb 15, 2012 12:40 AM CST up reply actions
for example
i hated my last manager at work, his management style was crap, he treated me like shit, and he looked like a vampire. Someone asked me how I liked working for him and I said it was great, that he really cared, he was a good manager, and I’m glad he was my boss. I was flat out lying but nobody called me on it, whether its because they believed I was sincere, didn’t care (figured I would lie if I didn’t like him since it would just get back to him and screw me), or didn’t think I could be lying since I gave examples. Now swap out Q for my manager and Sharp for me and its the same situation except with hockey.
That’s why I don’t put much stock in what is said to reporters about those types of things, you do what you have to do to not say something that’ll bite you in the ass later on. Like I said, Sharp may be telling the truth, and in fact probably is. I’m just choosing to take it with a grain of salt.

wanting a change is fine, but to who. And maybe it’s time to consider that the overall talent on this team just isn’t good enough. And yes Stan has had cap room to make a deal, but for who and at what cost?

Actually, that’s not fair. Scott actually looks like a hockey player when he is on the ice. It’s not his play that upsets me about him anymore. Give him credit — his game is leaps above where it was last year. Whats so frustrating is that Q simply refuses to put him on the damn ice for more than a microsecond. It doesn’t make any sense.

SCH lore
Wiener Tucker: Rick Nash “Back in the dark days when tickets to the 300 level were plentiful, McClure was at a game when a guy (also on the 300 level) yelled "RICK NASH IS A WIENER TUCKER". This was apparently quite audible on the ice, because Rick Nash possibly looked up upon hearing this. and thus, the legend was born.” However, no proof is available, so the correct term would be “Alleged (or purported) wiener tucker”

So sick of this "bad bounces" bullshit excuse
It is far more of an issue than “bad luck” or “lack of confidence”. Our stars are payed lots of money and are not doing their fucking job. Sure that Hossa goal was nice but we need more from the “core”. Kane’s decision making is really bad right now and so is Kieths. Way to high risk shit for a team in this position.
They refuse to fucking adjust. They looked a little better tonight but they are blowing the fucking game… No excuses. Savard just said they “deserve better”. NO THEY DO NOT

right, you never balme the president and ceo of an organization when the company or team goes down the shitter
….oh wait
it's one thing
to blame StanBow (for faulty construction) and Q (for his resolute refusal to adapt to the team he actually has). But your post insinuates that somehow John McDonough (who is clearly an apathetic person by nature) has singlehandedly poisoned this team with “Cubs Apathy”, which, of course, is something that doesn’t exist. And just so I’m clear, does Cubs Apathy take a few years to set in? Pretty sure McD was here when the Hawks managed to win in spite of it. I’m here every day, and you seem like a good and knowledgeable chap otherwise, but this is just silliness.
by Code Name Duchess on Feb 14, 2012 10:39 PM CST up reply actions
inaction would be a better word...
All he cares about is market value and filling the seats. As long as they are filling the UC (ala Cubs filling Wrigley) he feels he did his job. He is president and ceo and should be telling stan to get off his fucking ass and do something or he should be doing it himself. The blame ALWAYS lies with the president and ceo, period. It is the nature of the title and the job.The buck stops there, end of story. He is in charge of everyone below him, if they are failing, he is failing.
so
you want him directly involved in hockey operations then? I mean, more than simply telling StanBow “Do something! Whatever that might be since I’m not really a hockey guy!” Or do you think he should just go ahead and start firing people immediately? Seriously, what exactly do you think he should be doing? Insisting on asinine knee-jerk trades? Firing the entire front office? Look, I think we all think that something needs to be done, but if someone (anyone) can come up with a legitimate, rational, non-fantasy suggestion, I’d be all ears.
Look at tonight, this team played a very strong road game without 2 of their top 6 DMen, and with Stalberg, Lepisto and Scott basically riding pine all game. This team doesn’t need to be blown up. It has holes, absolutely, and the coaching becomes more exasperating by the day. But give me a reality-based hockey solution to the problem.
by Code Name Duchess on Feb 14, 2012 11:18 PM CST up reply actions
well, since I'm not a hockey GM with all of the ears to the ground
I don’t know who is calling around and shopping who, but for Stan to say he isn’t going to do anything and for the front office to back Q is fucking ludicrous. I’m not and never said blow up the team. I want a coaching change.
He's in charge of marketing, filling the seats
So he IS doing his job.
Why would you want an “apathetic” baseball guy involved in making hockey personnel decisions anyway?

he is Stan's boss right?
do you guys actually read the shit you post or just ry and think of sarcastic shit to write, seriously.
i can ask you the same question
because you clearly dont understand how sports franchises work. John McDonough has nothing to do with the hockey side of the Blackhawks. He runs the business side. Yes he does have the power to fire Stan Bowman, but he really cant do that without Rocky Wirtz’ permission. Stan Bowman(or and GM of the Blackhawks) was hired so Mcd wouldnt have to run the hockey.

oh, and as a response to the marketing thing...
I guarantee you that if the hawks start losing and missing playoffs, the UC will be back to 7000 a game in no time when it is no longer fashionable to be seen there and all of the people that go who dont know what the fuck icing is wont go. then it will be on the great McDonough because unlike Wrigley, the UC is not the biggest outdoor bar to hang out in during the summer sunshine where no one cares what product is on the field. He better find a way to put a winning team on the ice because he greatest sweater in all of sports didn’t sell shit when they were winning 20 games a year.
I don’t want an apathetic marketing guy to make hockey decisions, I want him to recognize when the people he hires who are supposed to know hockey are failing at their jobs and replace them.
here we go
your pointed reference to the age-old Cubs-bashing talking points betray you. again, you’ve offered no actual real world solutions. At what point in the season and 2/3rds since winning the Cup should McDonough have realized that his underlings were mismanaging the team? Last year when they had to deal with the aftermath of the salary cap purge (where, mind you, the hawks managed to acquire quite a few very nice assets given the circumstances)? Earlier this season when the team led the entire league in points? After losing the first four on this trip? Now, after 9 losses, and 13 days BEFORE the trade deadline? Since it’s clear that you believe that McD is moving too slowly, when exactly should the axe(s) have fallen?
by Code Name Duchess on Feb 15, 2012 12:23 AM CST up reply actions

No. ME NO FUCKING GUSTA. AT ALL.
This is where I’m at.

The Hawks played their fucking asses off tonight. They won every lose puck battle. They were playing with energy like I haven’t seen in a long time. I thought this was it. 5 minutes into the game, I thought this was it. I kept expecting a let down. Expecting a let down. Expecting a let down. Nope. Sustained effort. The entire game. They were getting after it. I could easily see that they wanted to win this game. When Toews was pushed into Rinne early in the first, everyone in a Hawks sweater was coming to his defense. I wanted to jump out of my seat. FUCK YEAH MOTHER FUCKERS!!!!
And then Nashville scored from the blue line late in the 3rd. Yes, it might have “nicked” Keith’s stick. It certainly didn’t change direction. That puck was going in whether it hit Keith’s stick or not.
All I know is, Rinne played his ass off. That is what a real NHL goalie looks like. I’m sure Corey and Ray are great people with charities and warm fuzzy bullshit off the ice. That’s great! But they aren’t doing jack for this team. This losing streak is on the goalies.
If a move isn’t made to correct this, it’s over. Fuck Q and all his stupid bullshit. We would have won tonight DESPITE his idiotic decision to play John Scott 4 fucking minutes (seriously. This make me want to beat this shit out of someone- WHY Q? WHY??) We lost this game because our goalie let in another soft goal. HE might have played well at times, but the 3rd goal is one you have to stop. Have to.
Please Stan, you’re our only hope.

we’d be saying they suck. I believe Keith’s stick more than nicked that shot. Question; are defensive players supposed to put their sticks in shooting lanes. Emery gave keith a WTF look when it happenned.
“They won every loose puck battle” – I liked that observation.
Toews has to bury that opportunity that Lepisto gave him. It wasn’t a very good shot. Rinne never moved his glove, it just went right into it like iron to a magnet. I don’t know if he’s still hurting or not but it was a weak shot.
The shot barely (if at all) changed direction
If you can, watch a replay, especially in slo-mo. When the goal was scored, I just assumed it was a significant redirection, too, but upon seeing the reply — nope. That puck goes in even if Keith is nowhere near.
It did change direction
On the second replay they showed, from behind the net, the puck was going to the far side of the net, for which Emery was reacting to, the puck was along the Ice on his stick side, so the only course of action was to kick the puck to the right and hope it goes to the wall or corner or deflects into the mesh. Ray’s right leg was extending to block that shot and keith knocked it back to the inside, where because of Emery making the correct play, the five hole was left open.
Yeah it sucks, but this is by far the best game they have played in the 9 game streak. I bet they give the rangers hell thursday.

Flip the coin over
How many great saves did Rinne make? If Emery or Crow make those saves, we’d be singing their praises.
And great goalies make many shots look routine. How about all those rebounds Rinne didn’t give up? Or the shots that just seem to be right at Rinne because he’s in good position?
IMO the 3rd goal was nothing short of awful. You could tell Razor knew it. And the 1st goal, which was also deflected, if Emery doesn’t go down early, that likely hits him in the shoulder or chest. He was giving up the entire top half of the net on a shot that was between knee and waist high before if was even deflected.

I thought Emery did a pretty good job keeping his front porch clean also.
it seemed to me Suter had time to throw some grass up in the air to check for wind direction on that first goal. Ya want to know what sucks, Rinne can go down and his shoulders still cover the top half of the net.
Personally, I hope Razor doesn’t beat himself up to bad over the goal – he hasn’t been playing awful by any means.
I’ll have to look at that goal and watch for what you describe – your ussually right on these analyses.
Definitely agree Rinne, and other big goalies, have that advantage
And that was my first thought when the 1st goal went in. “Rinne would’ve stopped that” even if he didn’t do anything differently from Emery.
Short people got no reason…

but anyway:
yes, Huet is still a Hawks employess, we do not know if there is any clause in his loan deal that keeps him in Swtizerland till their season ends (mid April for their Cup Final), he would have to clear waivers (he would) and his salary cap hit would be negligible.

I dont believe this is a one or two player fix
It is a system and coaching issue. Putting Huet in goal is not going to accomplish anything.
If we get nothing by the deadline
and we’re paying the guy anyway. May as well throw him in the net if nothing else is working.

I understand what you saying but,
there are guys making millions of dollars behind the bench and in the front office guiding a team that was leading the NHL in points a month ago. These guys need to have better solutions than bring back the goalie that they couldnt wait to get the fuck out of here a year and a half ago and say it is because we have nothing to lose. we might as well forfeit the season if putting Huet in goal is the fix. Drastic shit needs to be done, and now.
nobody is saying he is the fix.

if we don't get a new goalie, which we aren't going to, there's no reason not to try all available options if
craw doesn’t improve. I highly doubt Emery can play the remainder of the games for the rest of the season. Also you never know, Huet reverts back to the goalie he was before he lost his mind, and maybe he actively succeeds in stealing a game or two for us. Something we haven’t seen yet. We don’t know what can be accomplished by anything at this point, and I don’t see how trying whatever we can to spark something when it doesn’t hurt us isn’t a viable option

Huet reverting back to pre-broken form ...
I don’t know. I’d be afraid he’d pee himself at first sight of Q.
his play in the swiss league plus the simple fact that he got called back could give him a lot of confidence
like i said, he’s not the answer, but why not try the options we have available. i want to win, i don’t care how we do it as long as we’re not complacent.

i thought they looked pretty good and will stick for the next game. hopefully the benchings will stop
and scott isn’t on ice on Thursday. I thought Hossa still looked just ok until his goal, and the 2nd line can work. top line had its moments, but when i thought about it, not sure how good of an idea it is to have 3 guys on one line with bad wrists.

Loved them
Except for Scott, and Q not being able to play them all early in the game due to the penalties in the 1st period. 3rd line only had 3 shifts and the 4th line had 1.
Honestly, if could’ve put together the lines, mine would have been identical to the man, except having Frolik in for Scott.

anyone but Scott. I hope the lines stay as is as well, give them time to gel. And I still don’t see anything too crazy that Lepisto is doing that he didn’t even break 8 minutes tonight (meanwhile olsen had over 21).

I mean fuck Varlamov cost Colorado a 1 and a 2 or something crazy… and Colorado is an averag eteam (lottery possibly) so if you think Lindback is worth it, you’d probably have to offer 2 1sts.

they want Nash, but not because he’s a tremendous sniper, but because he’s big. News flash, Nash is no Lucic. I just hope they don't regress
That was a solid all around effort that on most nights will get you a win, not the play of a team on a 8 (now 9) game losing streak. I saw very little of the cutesy crap which leads to turnovers and defensive breakdowns and instead saw much more disciplined and determined hockey. Their confidence was not all there (how could it be) but once you throw in some swagger then that sort of all around team effort wins things.
Besides, Bickell got a goal and nearly killed someone behind the net on a forecheck, what more could you want?
sadly, a win
what more could you want?
but i guess thats how these things go, it will get better. this game was a good indicator of that.

so we have a moral victory of sorts
I’ll count that as an improvement, at least compared to previous efforts. Team worked hard all game, good things will happen if that continues. Now stay tuned for another edition of “tired sports cliches,” and also film at 11.
yay for moral victory
booo..another loss. If you put that same effort up night in and out good things will happen. It reminded me of the SJ game where they played great but lost. Hopefully we can use that effort in NY. Thats about all the positive things I can think of right now.

Pekka is really good and Henrik is better. Guess I agree with the moral victory because they did put forth a pretty decent effort tonight. The 0-6-1 road trip is really taking its toll on my morale though. Just like looking at the shift charts does from last night.

I hate to over value the importance of the goaltender
and while I certainly wouldn’t want the Hawks to pay anything remotely close to what Rinne gets, guys like that tend to minimize the kinds of losing streaks we’re currently suffering. I still fail to see the harm in at least trying Huet or (if he’s fully recovered) Salak back there, at least for a trial run to see if they can catch lightening in a bottle. I don’t know if Ray should have had that last one, but it sure looked to these untrained eyes like it was definitely stoppable.
I have to agree on the last one.

IDK
D2K redirected it about 10-15’ out with his stick just hanging out. It was heading for center mass of Ray and he was positioned to absorb and hold it, but got directed down and went 5-hole while he was perched up somewhat for a shot about 3’ off the ice. That is a tough one to pin on Ray, I ping more on Keith for redirecting it like he did.

That third goal I rack up to just a good hockey goal by NSH
Olsen turned over the puck by blindly wrapping the puck to the far halfwall. NSH intercepted the puck with no Hawk near by but one down low to prevent him from just walking in on Ray, a good cross ice pass, that after it bounced off the near half boards, was one-timed on net. D2K tried to block it where he was, Ray read it well as was in good position for it, it got enough of Keith to change direction enough to get by Ray. How fast NSH took the puck, got it cross ice and how quick the shot got off was a good play by NSH. They took advantage of a turnover, and were fast to get off the shot before the Hawks could get in good position defensivley to kill the play.
