Time's Running Out: Blackhawks @ Rangers - Preview/Pre-Game Thread/Lamaze Class

Rangers Blogs: Blueshirt Banter, Scotty Hockey (angriest man in the world)
As I said in last game's recap - if the Hawks were waiting for a truly dramatic and surprising way to break their losing streak... tonight's the night. I'm not really sure how or why it happened... but the Rangers are one of the best teams in the NHL this year. They haven't finished higher than third in the Atlantic since the lock out and have only had a few glimpses at the the second round but they are now near the top of the league in points (one behind Scum) despite having played the fewest games of anyone in the league. Though Detroit actually leads the league, they've also played 3 more games than the Blueshirts.
So what has pushed the Rangers to the top? The easy answer (and probably the correct one) is Henrik Lundqvist. King Henrik has always been one of the league's best netminders but hasn't been one that has had much real success. He's found another level this year though. He leads the league in Sv%, .941, and is second in GAA, 1.77. Only Brian Elliott is challenging his numbers but Henrik has played almost twice as many games this year. Making things even worse, Lundqvist is possibly playing his best stretch of hockey lately. In his last 10 games he's got 8 wins and a ridiculous 4 shutouts. And just in case you're wondering, yes, the Blackhawks are still looking for their first shutout of the year. Lundqvist isn't taking down easy opponents either - his last shutout came against the Bruins who don't lack firepower. However, the Hawks finally may have caught a break in facing their string of hot goaltenders, as Martin Biron is getting the nod tonight. Though that's been no picnic either, as Biron is boasting a 10-2-1 record with a 2.02 GAA, and a .919 save percentage when spelling the King.
It's not all goaltending that's brought the Rangers up to the top though. They've got 5 players with 30 points or more and 15 with at least 10. They're led by Marian Gaborik whose next point will be his 50th but it's probably captain Ryan Callahan that is the fan favorite. He was a fourth-round pick but showed a lot of scoring ability in the OHL and AHL. He's a smaller player 5'11 and 190 but he plays a much bigger man's game. We know that hits are a flawed stat but it's still impressive when you lead the team with 198 while also being second on the team in points. So the Rangers have a smaller sparkplug of a player who throws his body at any and everyone, blocks shots, and scores slightly under a point per game. He would be a goddamn hero in this town. The Rangers do have some slight flaws though - their power play is pretty tame, scoring only 14.8% of the time (worse than Chicago's!). Of course their PK is in the top 5 in the league... but then again, they've got Lundqvist.
In the middle of this stretch of suck, we didn't really have to go into full on panic because the Blackhawks had been sitting near the top of the league in points and could coast a bit and not lose much standing. They had such a lead on everyone that losing 5 in a row only dropped them a few spots and they still sat comfortably in a playoff spot. That's gone now though. The Hawks are now tied for 6th with LA and are only two points ahead of Phoenix. Scarier still, they're only three points ahead of 9th place Calgary. Both the Yotes and Flames are playing solid hockey right now with matching 6-2-2 records in their last 10 games. The Yotes also play the Kings tonight so it's possible that if things don't go well for the Hawks, they could be in a three-way tie for 6th. They'll still hold the six spot due to more wins in regulation though. But they are 100% out of time.
Somewhat surprising news from Q as he's going to start Crawford tonight despite a passable game from Razor last night. Your guess is as good as mine as to why. I'm writing this too soon to hear much about what lines the Blackhawks will be starting with but after a solid game last time out I would hope they stay the same. The Hawks aren't going to get any easy goals tonight so they're going to need to work even harder than they did in Nashville. As sad as it may be though, we can always hope for a letdown game from the Rangers.
Let's Go Hawks!

Sigh
Don’t overrate what Ray Emery is. He’s a 29 year old vagabound goaltender with bad legs and poor lateral movement. He doesn’t win based on wondrous technique or shutdown capability.
I like throwing Crawford further into the fire. It’s not like the Hawks will have option for upgrading the goaltender situation anytime soon…ESPECIALLY with the looming labor crisis and its likely impact on further salary cap reduction. Hawks are stuck with their investment in Crawford. Might as well see if he is salvageable.

Pretty much sums it up.
If we are going anywhere this year it is not going to be with Emery.

I still think Craw can return to last year's level
If he’d just stay in his damn crease, stop trying to be more than he is, and calm the fuck down.

The Rangers
my EC team. More and more difficult to dislike.
However, tonight, I hope the Ice will run red with their blood (metaphorically).
They've always been mine.
But in a game against the hawks, Hawks have priority

I don't understand the concept of a second team
Just one team can be exhausting enough. Although if I was forced to pick an EC team, I’d probably go with Montreal, just because I know how much it means to them. Though that said, I think it’s funny for Toronto to suck.

Not hopeful
This game will say a lot about the Rangers….are they “Cup legit”? Can they step on the throat of a bloodied oppponent entering their arena like the great teams do with frequency
To have any chance of winning this game then Crawford will need to stand on his head. Something he hasn’t done all season long. Hawks give up 3 goals and this game is 2 points for the Rangers. Lundquist is on one of the great goaltender tears of the last decade. And yes the Rangers are talented all over the place.

Ah Stacie, the Hawks be on a 9 game losing streak...
….and looking wretched in virtually every phase of the game. I get it that some of you are blind optimists and have your sacred cows (e.g., Patrick Kane), but reality does have to apply when you hit the 9 loss mark. Or is 10 losses in a row your break point where the objective side of the brain kicks in??

Anybody have (3) 300 level or standing room tickets they can sell me for face value or just a tad higher than? I have a couple buddies visiting me who love hockey and have never been to chicago before. I really want to take them to the game. Can email me at mvp.kyle@gmail.com. Thanks everybody!
Whoa damn
For a team in the midst of a 9 game losing streak 300 level starts at above $80. Ouch.

I’ve been searching for tickets for the last 2 hours, ticket exchange is about the same as stubhub.

I’ve gotten tickets at a steal with 24 hours or less to go before the game.
Or very good seats
at a very good price just hours before the game.

I found a decent deal on 100 level seats in row three last season about a month before the game lol.

For what its worth Jesse just tweeted that Bettman said the Hawks are being looked at for an All Star Game in the future with no certain date. I wonder if Rocky shares his co-owners sentiments about the ASG. The Reinsdorfs are against them because their season ticket holders only get a crack at about 3000 seats. Also I am sure this game wont happen until after…New Jersey, Dallas, Winnipeg and the Island get one.

Anyone that honestly wants to trade Kane now
Should think about what it would feel like to see him don another jersey, lift a cup with another team and sport a FUCK YOU HAWKS smile for trading him before he even hit his prime as he goes and terrorizes the Hawks for the rest of his career with another team.
Can’t guarantee what’ll happen in the future, but for at least the term of his current contract, can’t imagine Kane donning another jersey except for the Hawks’ without him coming back with a vengeance. Just look at his play in centre; he basically told everyone to shove it with their criticisms and laughs (I wish they would give Kane another chance at centre with Hossa for more than a few shifts to see if they can re-spark that explosive beginning).
I keep wanting to see

Leafs are still in a playoff race
Doubt Schenn moves and even if they weren’t in contention, I don’t think Schenn has more value to any other team than Toronto. Lengthy ticket ahead of him at a fair amount of money and all you’re paying for at this point is upside.
Where have you seen Alzner’s name? I’m just curious. McPhee shouldn’t be trading anyone since he’s only 4 points out of 3rd (makes division winners getting a top 3 seed that much more ridiculous) and Alzner is only 23 with 2 years remaining until RFA status.
by JesusMarianHossa on Feb 16, 2012 2:09 PM CST up reply actions
These are not rentals.
This is all fine and dandy but most of these guys if not all of them are not even on the market. The hawks certainly won’t be able to trade for them with simply prospects and picks too.
I mean...
Schenn is going to have a high tag, alzner is going to have a high tag, fistric will probably not even be available depending on how the grossman thing goes down, schultz won’t have that high of a tag but he has a contract that may be tough for the hawks to fit into their cap situation moving forward, o’byrne would actually be really nice but he may have a high tag given the favorable cap hit.
I'm not necessarily looking for rentals
If a team can get younger and better for a longer term, be it at the deadline or any time, they need to.
Gotta think outside the box.
Second City Hockey
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a goddamn shame
I agree completely.
I am just saying comparing a trade for kubina and a trade for the guys you brought up is apples and oranges.
I am totally willing to trade say sharp for schenn. I am not sure the leafs would want that given their needs but I would love to have schenn in a hawks uniform and wouldn’t mind saying bye to one of the big four up front to get it done.
I wouldn't trade Sharp for Schenn...

Second City Hockey
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a goddamn shame
Again...
I am talking structure of a deal. I am not a gm, I am not going to work out all of the little details all on speculation.
I do think that is a good beginning point though and I don’t think you are getting schenn without giving up a top 6 roster forward. The hawks also can’t take on his salary without freeing up cap space so really I don’t see any other way to get a guy like that than by giving up one of the big 4.
It depends. The Leafs are maybe the most desperate team in the league for a playoff appearance. Right now I don’t see Toronto trading Schenn to anyone unless they get a roster player back. They have depth on defense, no doubt, and need a more balanced attack up front, but Sharp is a definite overpayment on our part.
We don’t really have a forward who’s comparable in potential talent and upside right now. I don’t see us as a trading partner with them for that reason. We could only offer prospects and picks.
www.mjt.org
And just where they are at developmentally
I honestly think the hawks should open the door on moving sharp out of town, that would free up cap space and we should be able to get a somewhat young, top 4 d man.
I don’t think the leafs are a good fit either. They are looking for size up front and ideally a big center.
I’d hope that we keep Sharp myself. This team has had enough locker room turmoil. Without Toews, Sharp would be our captain. If it came to it—and I don’t think it does, i’d rather trade picks/prospects for that d-man.
i still don’t think we’re that far from regaining ground, and I think a 4th/5th defenseman, and reorganzied special teams, gets it done … provided the goalies, too, grow brains.
www.mjt.org
I think they have to relieve cap space.
And sharp seems like a decent option for that.
I know what he brings in the room but the reality is he isn’t always back checking hard, he certainly isn’t all that great in his own end, the hawks have a pretty decent group up front with or without him and the hawks could use a top 4 d man as well as cap space.
He is more likely than fistric, that is for sure.
Philly is pretty hot on him though.
Kyle Quincy
He’s an upcoming RFA but would be good long term. 26 years old, 6-2, 207lbs, good skater, good body position and logs 2:30 on both the PP and the PK. Puck Daddy actually had him listed a couple weeks ago as someone that “rumours” had on the move (not sure where that came out of but I’d be surprised if the Av’s moved him) . His name doesn’t really come up all that frequently but he’s a very sound and stable player but not a board rattler like Schenn, O’Byrne & Fistric (all +230lb hitters so I can see the logic there). I still prefer Quincy’s overall game (particularly his PP ability) and he’s not really much older than Fistric (24) or Schenn (22) and he’s younger than O’Byrne.
Schultz is big but he’s a cream puff out there, and he’s a lumbering turd. Alzner’s marginally bigger than Quincy, is younger (23) but doesn’t play any more of a banger role than Quincy – and he doesn’t have his offensive skill set either.
You are next.
by M7 on Feb 16, 2012 3:01 PM CST up reply actions
Quincey has offensive upsaide, too … had a great year a couple years ago as I remember … I think.
www.mjt.org
He's got about 25 this year too...
Recent history would suggest he’ll fall somewhere in the 8-12 goals and 35-40 points. He’ll also give you about 100 hits and blocks. Pretty nice game.
Given the general softness of our defence though, I can understand McClure’s call for someone in the ilk of a Schenn, O’Byrne or Fistric. Guys that will put you into the fence or on your ass if you’re looking for shrapnel in the crease.
You are next.

I certainly wouldn't
trade the future for the present until we figure out if we have a goalie who can even get us into the first playoff round.
Well,
part came up twice and the other part did not come up at all. The rest of what I wrote was:
trade our future for the present until we figure out if we even have a goalie who can get us into the first round.
I think if you free up cap space
You open up the possibility of picking up a goalie on july 1st. Again I go back to moving sharp for a young, top 4 d man at a reasonable cap hit.
And I am not slamming sharp, I think he is a great player. I just think this team may be a little bit too top heavy with cash.

Seriously that is hard to believe, but the prima-donna is highly paid for someone getting a bit past his prime.
Is the prima donna thing just a jab at a hated opponent? I see this now and again, and I’m on board with it. But everyone knows he’s not actually that kind of player, right?
www.mjt.org
I'd take Rick Nash in a second
And he’s stuck with a struggling franchise when he could of picked up a better contract and likely a cup somewhere else. I think its a bit much to call him a Prima Donna.

Would insert website here but I have no idea how.
Not quite as horrible. But he's been disciplined for that sort of hit before.
Very odd they didn’t do anything about this one.
Would insert website here but I have no idea how.
I figured he would have gotten a 2 gamer
Since he received 5 on the Salo clipping major…but I guess they didn’t even penalize him during the game.
what was his reasoning on why?

He said on Twitter
that they did not like it, but because the contact was with the hip, no supplemental this time.
You get the feeling that Marchand is on Shanny’s “list”, at or near the top of it.
It was almost the same hit but for the contact. Because it was face up ( and the little coward went down low at the last second ) Emelin was able to get just enough out of the way.
I mean, it was a face to face forecheck with a second left in the period, and he does that?

Was Emelin injured at all on the play?
I’m guessing he wasn’t because that probably would have tilted the balances for a suspension. I really don’t like that little shit pulling that crap anymore, especially with a second left in the period.
I thought it totally deserved a suspension.
It his second low hit in a matter of a few weeks. Injury or no injury he clearly did not receive the message the first time.
so he basically got lucky that he managed to get his hit.
he knows better. He should have gotten at least a game or two for simply not learning from his last suspension which wasn’t too long ago

Thanks.
What a dick that guy is. And to think I loved him for those short seconds when he was punching Twin. All dick now.
www.mjt.org
he did the same thing...almost
later in the game when someone went to hit him…another near miss.
The clincher to his “Douchnozzle of the Year” award has to be the preaching to the Habs fans about “class” when they cheered Zdeno taking a puck off the chin ( which I thought was a bit much ).
AV was right. Guys in the NHL will see this and start going “get him boys”. They better keep the little piece of shit on the ice with Lucic and Zdeno every shift, because I would bet the patience has run its course and the word is out.

Anything with words is pretty much fine by me (minus the obvious, racism and stuff). A guy can say anything he wants to whoever, on ice or not. It’s the dirty plays that can injure someone, that’s what sets me off. Even punches after the whistle, little pest assholish stuff, fine … but the second you get at knees and heads, etc., then fuck you.

I looked at the hit from both camera angles
I just didn’t look all that outrageous to me (sorta cheesy, buy not all that far out) – is the hip check now illegal?

when you face up with someone
and then duck down at the last second, you are giving that person no chance to protect themselves.
He does not hip check…he just got lucky that the other guy moved a bit to make the contact just enough to not get suspended in this case

Based on all of this trade talk
It seems like a lot of us have forgotten that there is a salary cap that could very likely go down next year under the new cba.
Sorry ladies
During an interview on WGN radio last night, Bryan Bickell announced he got engaged two weeks ago, to his long-time girlfriend of nine years.

My apologies for doing this on a big game day, but I figured the sooner you know, the sooner the healing process can begin.

However, the Hawks finally may have caught a break in facing their string of hot goaltenders, as Martin Biron is getting the nod tonight. Though that’s been no picnic either, as Biron is boasting a 10-2-1 record with a 2.02 GAA, and a .919 save percentage when spelling the King.
