Turn The Page - Hawks 4, Rangers 2
Our long national nightmare is at last over.
Though the Hawks did catch a break before the puck even dropped with Biron starting, from the word "Go" this team finally appeared as though it had had enough of what has been transpiring for nearly four weeks. Daydream Nation and Sharp were buzzing on their first shift, which led to a net scramble which led to Dan Girardi covering the puck in the crease, and the Hawks were awarded a penalty shot. Jonathan Toews was the obvious choice to take it, and went five-hole for an early lead as if there was any other option. Thankfully, the foot only got heavier on the accelerator after that point, and goals from Nick Leddy, Patrick Sharp, and finally Marian Hossa made the game 4-nothing before the Blueshirts knew what hit them.
While the Hawks didn't mount much of a threat from there on out, and the PK put in some excellent work, killing all 7 Ranger advantages, beggars certainly cannot be choosers, and the Hawks walked away with two points for the first time in nearly a month. Though he was backstage in the Garden's green room going through the bowl of M&M's, unfortunately, DLR would not hit the stage this evening. Perhaps it's better that way, I don't think any of us could have taken that sensory overload after being deprived. At long last, your victorious bullets:
Observations
- Though the Rangers put 24 shots on goal, half of them were in the 3rd period, when they finally got desperate. That doesn't mean Corey Crawford didn't have to make some key saves, which he did for the first time in what feels like an eternity. Not coincidentally, Crow was visibly deeper in his net, and roamed far less and allowed the puck to come to him. The rebound control probably could leave a little bit to be desired, but a stable Crawford obviously goes a long way.
- Similarly, the penalty kill has tightened things up quite a bit as well. Changing the scheme back to a traditional "box" alignment from their triangle + 1 set up where the two forwards were stacked in the slot has allowed the killing forwards to simplify their assignments and angles, and get by with more pure hustle with their stops and starts. These last two points are intertwined not only in their direct effect on Hawk success, but also in how inexplicably goddamn long it's taken for them to happen.
- John Scott actually did something vaguely positive in screening Biron on the Leddy goal, and then went out of his way to give the Rangers back the momentum with his double-dip of dumb dick penalties. He didn't have a shift after the 3 minute mark of the second. The only question remaining about his uselessness is the degree - will the stupidity outweigh whatever perceived good luck or toughness he brings enough to keep him out of the lineup going forward? I wouldn't bet on it.
- Marian Hossa with a goal and an assist, Jonathan Toews with a goal and an assist, Patrick Sharp with a goal, Patrick Kane with an assist, Blackhawks win. These things are not coincidence.
- So the Andrew Shaw thing has to be done, right? A reaching penalty, an blown assignment on the Staal goal, and the puck hitting him in the face in the third period is the first time in a month he's touched it and hasn't turned it over. Michael Frolik and Brendan Morisson must be thrilled to be sitting behind Shaw and Scott.
- Sami Lepisto continues to offend the sensibilities of no one with a brain. Yes, there will be occasional mistakes, but he's a third pairing defenseman, it'll happen. He hasn't gotten anyone killed and that's all you can ask.
- Nick Leddy looks far more assured after a few games with Brent Seabrook, and likely more importantly, away from Niklas Hjalmarsson.
- The power play is still fucking clown shoes. 4 on 3, 4 on 2.5 (broken stick), 5 on 2.5, 5 on 3, and no one running a point can move laterally? This still needs to change.
- It feels good, doesn't it? Now go get another one, men. Sorry, but I'm just greedy like that.

Let's cash in on our thin blood and have another one."
Personally I thought he played really well
Aside from the play where he fell, but you never know on those, sometimes thats just bad ice or luck. One thing I really like about him is he always seems to know where his teammates are when trying to get out of the zone. The past few games he doesnt seem to panic and always finds an open skater to get the puck out.
That being said, i still think he could use the rest of the year and maybe some of next year in Rockford. just not quite ready but close.

I'm happy wih Olsen...
He still needs some experience but what better opportunity is there than live NHL action? Especially paired with Duncan Keith, who I thought looked real good tonight. That being said I think Leddy has looked better paired with Biscuit. If we can’t make a drastic move on the back end, I’d rather move forward with a couple of D’s that will get better opposed to those who will stand pat or regress

He hasn't done anything to get my ire yet
and he has the size to clear the front of the crease on the PK, something the Hawks are sorely lacking. I’m willing to endure his growing pains if the Hawks want to keep him around to help the PK.
Yep ....he clears outs the front of the net effectively.
….he has a big body and like likes to use it. His skating and def awareness is raw , but he compliments a smaller puck carrier very effectively. Seabs/Leddy and Olsen/Keith are the biggie smalls combo defensive packages that are very effective.

I've been really high on this kid...
but last night I think I saw some chinks in his armor. He looked more skittish. His skating as choppier than in other games.
But he is big. Big is Good!
I don't necessarily see anything bad that I can't write off as "mental transition" to the NHL from the AHL
There’s some hesitency and laying back/standing still that is fairly common for players of all ages as they make jumps from lower to higher paced levels.
If he doesn’ settle in after a handful or so of games, then there’s cause for worry (or cause for going back to the AHL for more maturing)
Fighting stupidity since 1958 (its a much bigger project than originally envisioned).
Confusion will be my epitaph.

"some hesitancy and laying back/standing still..."
the standing still is an apt desription of what scared me last night. Believe me, I’m not criticizing too much, but your observation “that it is fairly common…” was dead on.
It would be nice to har what Keith thinks of his new bunk mate
I saw it at every level of coaching (Mites to Midgets) and as my boys hit Juniors/College
It is exceedingly common, and no predictor of future success or failure – as long as they adjust out of it in a reasonable timeframe
Fighting stupidity since 1958 (its a much bigger project than originally envisioned).
Confusion will be my epitaph.
It needs more cowbell.
I think it is more adjusting the mental processing of info to the new speed/talent level
Each level, be it age group or league level, moves much faster and has a higher level of talent moving at that higher speed. It takes some time to mentlaly recalibrate
Fighting stupidity since 1958 (its a much bigger project than originally envisioned).
Confusion will be my epitaph.
It needs more cowbell.
Sort of...but the mind has to process faster
maybe more like shifting to a higher gear to cruise at a higher speed

That pretty much nails Seabrook, doesn't it?
of all things, he looks like he belongs on NHL ice more than most defensemen out there. It is quite a quality to have.
I wanted the Packers to win the Super Bowl, Megan!
I think he's the best option available to us. He has exceeded my expectations.
Yes, he makes mistakes, but the guys skating 30 minutes make mistakes too.
He will grow into NHL just fine.

Scott
Almost managed to praise Scott there, but then you bailed.
Too bad. There was nothing really vague about the screen he set and on the second goal. This team desperately needs that disruptive presence in front. Somebody.
The working it backwards to the point on the powerplay would make more sense if we had Howitzers back there. We do not.
Thus, down low in front is where the Hawks must go.
It looks like they've exorcized their dragons.
The screen was nice
But it was forgotten the instant he buried that dude after the whistle.
Dumb.

Eh . . .
The screen was real nize.
The penalty – while dumb – was not dirty and delivered a message of sorts.
Hawk fans are going to have to get used to seeing John Scott for three or four shifts a game – generally early.
It looks like they've exorcized their dragons.
It's the three or four shifts a game that is the problem.
I don’t think anyone has a problem with what Scott potentially provides in terms of an intimidation factor or protection for our skill players. It’s the fact that he can’t provide it over the course of an entire game because Q just can’t trust him out there beyond the first 20-30 minutes because of the severe limits of his actual hockey playing ability.
I’d love to see Scott gone after this year and replaced by someone who can contibute actual hockey skill to the team equation to go along with the toughness/intimidation factor. We have someone close to that now in Mayers. Adding another would be nice, only with a bit higher skill level. (Think Lucic, only not such a douchebag. Or to reach back in time for the perfect example from Hawks history, Al Secord.) Granted, these kind of players don’t grow on trees, but we should try to acquire the closest thing to it we can.
"Against logic there is no armor like ignorance."
- Laurence J. Peter
Agree 100%
Considering this is the last year of his deal I would be shocked beyond all belief if Scott were resigned. It may be wishful thinking but I would like to see Hayes develop a little more of a mean streak and become that player that can respond to the cheap stuff but still be able to provide a tangible component of hockey to the system.
I’m not sure if Q was playing dumb or what but in the morning links a few days ago there was an interview with him and he was asked about what he thought Scott provided, and when he was asked what he thought of the fans interpretation or thoughts about Scott Q asked if they had a positive or negative view of him (Scott). I’m sure that even Q is not that naive to not know that he is hurting his club by dressing him.
No worries, this was the plan all along!

meh
even the Ranger announcers were incredulous regarding the call on him. That wasn’t boarding and it didn’t deserve to be paired with a roughing minor. You could have given him interference and then have Rupp’s roughing penalty offset any PP for the Rangers. Also note that Shaw’s holding penalty on that same sequence didn’t help one bit.
So no, Scott did not “nearly let the Rangers back into the fucking game”. Completely disagree.
Agreed that it was interference and not boarding.
But c’mon, he absolutely buried Mitchell -who didn’t even have the puck. The Rangers on the ice were right to be pissed off and that’s the sort of thing that fires teams up.
Luckily for the Hawks, the Rangers seemed to have their heads up their asses last night.

I really don’t care if the Rangers had the right to be pissed off. The Hawks came out fired up, playing an extremely physical game.
Do I dare say it? Scott was most definitely a net positive last night.
Going to have to agree to disagree here.
Not sure how a guy who didn’t play the entire 3rd period and most of the 2nd in a miniature blowout could have been a net positive.

I did not see the game
But I read about it here. He screened the goalie once. Took a bad penalty at a inopportune time. Net 0 or below in my book, and was subsequently benched by his coach, which may or may not have been planned by Q in the first place.
I think there are several hundred players that can accomplish that.

Scott has been defined down to a ridiculous degree at this point
“really working hard at his skating and passing in practice,’ “getting better,” and all this blah, blah, blah. Right now if he can actually skate the entire length of the rink without falling down he gets a pass for all of the other stupid shit he does – and all this in only >5 minutes of ice time per game!
Sounds like my game
Only difference is I’m 49 and have only been skating a year. I am, John Scott. Scott would actually be a nice addition to the SCH Street Hockey Club. He certainly wouldn’t be the best player out there, but definitely upper echelon.

but he didn't take a penalty at an opportune time...
the Hawks were up 3-0 and it was a clean hit outside the fact that the puck didn’t actually get to the Ranger player as Scott might have anticipated. The extra 2 minute roughing penalty was a farce.
Leddy’s goal was in huge part to Scott. If Scott isn’t in position (eureka!), the Rangers might not play a more aggressive style of game that lead to the next two break-away goals.
There were how many other PP chances for the Rangers? Not surprising that the angst isn’t directed at the other 3 interference + too much man penalties. Scott is an easy target.
it was after the whistle, wasn't it?

That job and family thing takes up some of my time.
About the Third Man In
46.16 Third Man In – A game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on any player who is the first to intervene (third man in) in an altercation already in progress except when a match penalty is being imposed in the original altercation. This penalty is in addition to any other penalties incurred in the same incident.
This rule also applies to subsequent players who elect to intervene in the same or other altercations during the same stoppage of play.
Generally, this rule is applied when a fightys occurs.
On the Instigator concept, the Instigator Rule 46.11 also is under the Fighting rule portion. So it must be assumed if no fight happens, neither can the instigator.
As for what the NHL defines as what a “Fight” is,
46.1 Fighting – A fight shall be deemed to have occurred when at least one player (or goalkeeper) punches or attempts to punch an opponent repeatedly or when two players wrestle in such a manner as to make it difficult for the Linesmen to intervene and separate the combatants.
The Referees are provided very wide latitude in the penalties with which they may impose under this rule. This is done intentionally to enable them to differentiate between the obvious degrees of responsibility of the participants either for starting the fighting or persisting in continuing the fighting. The discretion provided should be exercised realistically.

on MSG (Rangers telecast). The hit occurs at the tail end of the whistle. Ranger announcers, who can be homers, had no issue at all with the timing or the hit.
I think next time,
instead of riding the guy towards the boards several feet away, Scott needs to just toss him to the ground. The refs do not seem to have a problem with that.
I'd prefer Scott just toss him into the crowd

Bruno still has talent that the team can use, and the PP is right in his wheelhouse. I don’t care if he’s slower than a lame mule out there, once he gets set up in front of the net he’s dangerous, and that will become critical come playoff time (yeah, I said it).
especially when the hawks have an O zone
Face off on the pp, Bruno wouldn’t have to go anywhere, win the FO and away you go. IMO no one on the hawks is better around the net in tight quarters than Bruno

I thought, holy shit, this game is ours.
Because it involved Panda manhandling all the Rangers into submission and then…Leddy?! LEDDY!
And then my friend and I may have started singing “Chelsea Dagger” before sitting back down.

It's based off of a 1920's series of books classified as "Science Romances"
John Carter is a dude that basically is whisked away to Mars, where he finds an eternal struggle going on between the Red Men (they look like humans) and Green Men (those tall thin four armed things). Since the gravity is lower on Mars, Carter is faster and stronger and can jump farther than any of the other inhabitants. He of course falls in love, becomes a warlord, and helps defeat world-threatening crises. They aren’t that bad of books, you can get them for free through iBooks or whatever since they are in public domain now.

Since Kitchen apparently is going to be handling one side of the special teams equation at any given time
which one can we least afford to be tits up going down the strectch and into the playoffs?
I’m guessing that at the moment Havi is handling the PK, and it seems to heading in the right direction, and Kitch is handling the powerplay and it is all kinds of clown shoes.
So if we can only have one working well at a time which one is more important to overall success, PP or PK?

A thought about Kane
His confidence isn’t 100% yet. Last night we seen glimpses of the “fuk u” 88 we all know and lust for. He just seems to shut it down too early each play. I am 100% confident that he will be 100% confident soon.
P.S. I believe Sharp was awakened last night and fully expect a Sharpie Goal rampage to start again.
P.S, #2 Stals is still getting better and better -he is so confident now with the puck.
Ver™
he still seems to make one boneheaded play every game though!
I was screaming, “No, no! Don’t go backwards” in the third.
He’s like that ceral that was shot from guns though, no? :)
He has always made boneheaded plays
Even when they won the Cup. If he can get his confidence back then the advantages will at least equal the disadavantages
Stalberg?
He wasn’t here when they won the Cup. Or are you talking about Kane?
by Katherine215 on Feb 17, 2012 9:49 AM CST up reply actions
I thought he's been one of the better players this stretch to be honest. And though he's not scoring, he's clearly doing what he can defensively. He's had a ton of takeways and has been backchecking like crazy
Also, Rangers commentators said Kane was asked about his wrist and he said that he still gets it worked on everyday but that he refuses to use it as an excuse.

but a guy at work told me a story about Dan Hampton, (truly one of the greatest athlete’s to ever wear a Chicago uniform). Back in the junk yard dog days, Hampton would threaten his teamates with death by cow-a-bunga if they brought a running back down to early.
“You hold them up so we can get some licks on them.’ and reportedly he meant it.
I believe it
if you look at the NFL Films feature on that team, you’ll find a clip where Singletary is asking whether his teammates really want to kill one particular QB in a game during the regular season. “Come on, guys, you don’t REALLY want to kill him, right?” “No, WE WANT TO KILL HIM! THAT”S WHAT WE DO!"

I’ll add one thing – there were two plays that epitomized what it takes to win in the NHL.Both Kruger and Bickell held their ground along the boards and took huge hits – not shying away from the contact. Playoff type desire. Both of them had to dust off their trousers, but the puck quickly left our zone.

Good wrap. Could not agree more on sending Shaw down.
5th round draft picks are 5th round draft picks. Send him back to Rockford and get Hayes back up here. Or, simply dress Morrison/Frolik. I’ve seen enough dumb penalties and turnovers from #65.
The kill was nails last night. Even Nick Leddy looks passable now that we’ve gone back to the box formation. PP was all out of sorts as mentioned. Point still occupied by a forward and when we had our double minor where it was 4v3, 5v3, 5v4 there needed to be line changes made as some of the players had been out there for a good 2 minutes. Rangers were gifted easy kills with tired powerplay units.
Really love that 15-16-81 line. They do some serious work behind the goal line and force opposing defences to really work to get the puck back.
by JesusMarianHossa on Feb 17, 2012 8:50 AM CST reply actions
I still feel the bigger issue with the PK is the forecheck/zone entry
It was again awful last night. They give up the zone entry way too easily and the forechecker does very little to guide the puck to the boards where F2 and/or a D-man can trap the puck carrier. The Hawks forecheckers’ on the PK seem to be just skating along with the opposition without intent.

not sure what him being a 5th rounder has to do with anything. There are plenty of excellent hockey players that were drafted at that point (see Pavel Datsyuk).

Billy The Kid
I had a strange feeling of optomism yesterday morning and texted back and forth with some of my buddies about the game and the monumental odds against us: we hadn’t won at the Garden in nearly 10 years, we were going up against the best team in the NHL (F the scum), and arguably the best goalie in the NHL (before we heard Hank would sit out)…which all made me think of that scene in Young Guns where the boys are surrounded by The Law and Billy the Kid says ‘I like these odds’. And I did. I’m glad it worked out in our favor.
