Random Goaltending Knowledge of the Day- Pad Width
A couple people on the board asked me to throw some of my goaltending specific comments into the fan posts section. I have some time today, so I figured I would get them done all on at once. Enjoy!
all nhl goalie leg pad faces must have a maximum width of 11" or less. This is down from 12" as mandated in rule 11.2: "The leg guards worn by goalkeepers shall not exceed eleven inches (11’’) in extreme width when on the leg of the player."
below is a comparison of the old 12" pads, versus the current 11" pads on the right
while decreasing pad surface serves to lower blocking ability (in the hope to increase scoring), it also increases mobility, making the goaltender quicker.

Great series of posts, Raditzzzz
Maybe it’s an optical illusion because the wider ones are shorter, but that 1" in width change looks dramatically different. (preemptive TWSS)
Let's Go Hawks!
not my pads, just used that pic for illustrative purposes
mine are vintage color islanders pads, blue and orange. those velocities on the right are pretty sweet tho, wouldn’t mind having them. just to give people a point of reference for what goaltending equipment costs, the year those pads on the right came out, they retailed for about $1,400. that is usually what new model pads will run any given year.
In my last years playing
we had a goalie who wore his brown pads circa 1976 complete with newspaper packed into the whole patched with duct tape. Classic. LOL
Sort of like these…

Thank you, sir! May I have another?
Agree, great series of posts!
