Compassion Is Broken Now, My Will Is Eroded Now: Hawks 4 - Oilers 39773889308

It's funny. I went to the doctor today for the first time in years. Naturally, he informed me I needed to quit smoking. On nights like this, it seems the most ridiculous suggestion possible.

Ok. I think it's important on a night like this to try and separate what matters from a lot of the silliness we saw tonight, which delved into the ridiculous and unfathomable. Some of it felt like when the cast of Monty Python during their live shows would just run from offstage left to offstage right for no reason. Simple silliness for the sake of it. I mean, we definitely got into fun-bad territory there.

The thing is, I'm not angry. I know a lot of you are, and you have every right to be. But the whole thing felt like watching a toddler throw his pants over head and run dangerously close to the street (which is incidentally the defensive plan the Hawks employed tonight) -- you have to be angry at the parents who let him do so but can't help but produce a smile at the entertainment factor.

Do we know anything different? No, not really. The problems are still the same as they were after the Hawks put forth a fine performance in Vancouver.

Is our view of them different? Maybe. The main conclusion of all this, and it's not even a conclusion, is that the Hawks may be, repeat: may be, at end game with Corey Crawford. Quite simply, his dog-trying-to-grab-a-basketball act tonight cost the Hawks momentum and then the game. Taylor Hall's goal shouldn't have gone in. For the umpteenth time this year, when a player wraps around the net from the circles Crow lost his net, costing the equalizer. It only got worse.

There are only 30 games left. The string of games Crow would need to have confidence rebuilt might simply not be on offer now. Sassone was right, it felt like those games in Columbus in March of both '09 and '10 when Huet melted down and handed the job to Khabibulin and Niemi. Is the job handed to Emery now? The thing is, we know what Emery is. Or we think we do. Maybe it doesn't mean much, but if you take out the two Edmonton games and the Philadelphia loss when the team was basically a Gwar sound check, Emery's save-percentage is .921. So maybe?

Before we trade everyone, which will happen between now and the puck drop tomorrow in Calgary, the needs are still the same, and they're all jaded by the goaltending behind them. The second pairing still has question marks. Raging, pussing, bleeding question marks that require a balm, but question marks. But would that pairing look better with solid goaltending? It probably would. So would the penalty kill.

On a night like this, there's a tendency to call for major changes. It makes everyone feel better. But there are little options for the second pairing and goalie situation to be found.

To me, before it all became something out of Tim Burton's soiled toilet set ablaze, other than the goaltending the other serious issue are the special teams. They still are. The kill gave up Whitney's goal. But before that, the power play had a chance to take the lead and turn the tide. It didn't, for the same reasons it hasn't all year. Poor entry, whacked structure, predictable tactics.

Because of that, and some other things (like say, a second mauling at the hands of one of the worst teams in the West), some serious focus must be brought on the coaches. The power play hasn't changed other than for injury. The penalty kill still has faulty parts (though most of it goaltending). Yet John Scott gets ahead of Montador to kill some time? More importantly, this wasn't a team out to avenge anything. This team wasn't prepared to set things right from the last time they were here. Is that the leadership in the team, or behind the bench? I don't really know.

As ugly as it was, the status of the team is pretty much the same. One of the best in the West, but with holes that need addressing. They seem bigger now. I doubt the answer is a Kane for Ryan Miller trade, but I fully expect that to be suggested.

No one escapes blame, obviously. That tight structure we were encouraged by on Tuesday was hanging out where the buses don't run tonight. But I don't think that's what this team is. It's more than just a bad night, I can't dismiss it there. But it's not a season killer either.

There will be calls for blood. They would be justified. But I bet the response from those in charge is a deep breath, and a few more games on this trip before making any decisions. That's probably what it should be. It should probably be ours as well.

Maybe that all doesn't make sense. I wouldn't be surprised. My brain turned into goo like yours, I ran out of my beer and had to resort to the Hamm's that a buddy left here during a poker night a few weeks ago. I think this is the best I can do right now.

Damn you for making sense

But in all seriousness a good wrap. I agree on the points of the coaching though. This is a team that needs to stay focused and bring that effort as needed and consistently.

i don't know, i thought we started out tonight really well,

and then lost steam. whether it was the goals against or they just started to care less, i don’t know. the penalties and special teams didn’t help either. not all the players were on the same page at the same time, which is unfortunate, because some were really working for it, and i really thought we had it. i still don’t think we need to do something huge to fix it though. commitment to defense doesn’t need new people, you just need the current players to buy into it, and that could even help cover some of Crows deficiencies. i would still like someone for defense and a top 6 winger or center though, but i don’t think our answer is to make a big trade, especially at this juncture, that could weaken us further.

i definitely

think there was a “foot off the gas” element after we had established the lead in the first. then the game became a run and gun, which usually works into the hawks favor, but apparently that never happens against edmonton.

for whatever reason, i don’t feel the same about crow as i did with huet. it almost felt like you knew huet was going to lose the game. but i guess its approaching that level with crow.

by Raditzzzz on Feb 3, 2012 8:17 AM CST up reply actions

Foot off the gas is what I saw

I commented (at home) that it looked like the Hawks were playing against an AHL team in the first period. After the Hawks took a 2-0 lead I think they started thinking the game was over.

Coupled to that letdown was Crawford falling apart, yet again. He let in some very soft goals which I believe took the heart out of the rest of the team. I hate to say it, and I haven’t read the rest of the comments down below yet, but we need to move him to the bench. I don’t know if Emery and his hip can handle the pressure of being number 1, but Crawford is not the guy.

Thank you, sir! May I have another?

The Oilers have THE BEST AHL team by far

OKC is a very good squad, the Oilers are going to be a very good team very soon.

I'm not positive that it translates to the NHL

the Wolves were the class of the AHL for sometime, and the Thrashers, well they sucked.

Different situation

Atlanta was totally incompetent. The oilers are a young team with good talent playing in the NHL with even more talent that should be ready in a year or two.

I do get your point though.

I admit though, when it got to 8, I started thinking we should pull Emery and then just play “keep everyone except Gagner away!” Only not really.

As much as I wanted to, and it certainly made sense, I refused to turn it off.

After listening to Konroyd trying to make some sense out of it all, I went upstairs and gave myself 30 lashes, plus one.

Funny you mention that about emery, when the Oils scored there 8th i looked a t Q and thought “He ought to just pull the players off the ice and head to the locker room.”

oh, I still have a bucketful of fucks

I’m not a clothes-horse type of girl, so plenty of room in my closet for those buckets. That was just the last fuck I gave about the Edmonton game. Once the buzzer sounds, I just don’t care anymore. There’s more lingering euphoria after a Hawks win, but after a game, whether it’s win, close loss or a blowout, my apathy level raises significantly and I move on to whatever else will entertain me. That’s part of the reason I spend so much time on SCH – this place is one of my favorite places for entertainment. (I like our people too!)

As for the narrative thing, I agree completely. Sometimes we get caught up in wanting people to see what we see that we forget that differing opinions ≠ disrespect/end of a conversation. I’m not sure what you meant about the “meta” trend, though.

Sam, settle down

Let’s all relax here. The hawks came out good tonight. They should have won this game easily. It’s all on Crawford. 100 percent.

It’s a big problem, no doubt, but it’s a problem that can to be worked out somehow. If Crawford had been even remotely competent tonight we would all be happy and no one would be ranting about the power play, the second unit dmen, the coaching, etc. etc. This isn’t the game to be complaining about that stuff. The hawks played good tonight until Crawford imploded, that simple. Keep it in perspective.

That's a F*cking Goal~Me on 6/9/10

by JozoDClown on Feb 3, 2012 8:38 AM CST up reply actions

C'mon, really?

Keith went to the box twice too. Stalberg took a stupid penalty. Barker got a weak boarding call (and Edzo calls out Shaw for being a diver?? Fuck Edzo), so they get Bickell for an even weaker boarding call in return. Ya’ll wanted him to play more physical, right?

IMO the only “solid” penalty call in that game prior to the 3rd period was the TMM penalty. Keith’s holding call was questionable. Eager’s high sticking call was probably wrong, so they in turn called Bickell for a high sticking. Bickell should have drawn his 2nd penalty on that play, but instead he got called for one. He made a nice play there. The missed call was bullshit.

Rule 69.4 – Contact Outside the Goal Crease
When a goalkeeper has played the puck outside of his crease and is then prevented from returning to his crease area due to the deliberate actions of an attacking player, such player may be penalized for goalkeeper interference. Similarly, the goalkeeper may be penalized, if by his actions outside of his crease he deliberately interferes with an attacking player who is attempting to play the puck or an opponent.

I mean how blatant could Dubey have been? He whiffs on the puck and his first reaction is to interfere.

Bickell was 20 feet behind Petry at the blue line, caught him, and made a nice move to get position there. Instead he gets called for a penalty. And even if he did high stick Petry, the Oilers already have possession after the interference so it wouldn’t have been called.

Can’t blame a guy for trying.

I was screaming at Edzo too.

Huh? Shaw should have taken the boarding hit better? Blew me away. I don’t want “homers” but sometimes Edzo tries too hard to show he isn’t one.

And the league needs to figure out “what is and isn’t goalie interference.” There is a race to the post and the offensive team has a player between the goalie and the post. THAT IS GOALIE INTERFERENCE! And it is an easy call and it is ALMOST NEVER called.

by DaleHalas on Feb 3, 2012 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

Worst broadcast of the year from CSN, IMO

Add to that Edzo saying Leddy interfered with Crow as he’s watching the same replay as me, which clearly showed they never made contact. Then at intermission the studio guys repeat the same stupidity.

And I’m glad some 7 yr old LOVES John Scott.

Probably the only upside

(other than getting to see every Hawks game) of paying for the “Center Ice” programming is that I usually get 2 broadcasts of each game which allows me to not have to listen to Edzo & Foley spew their nonsensical prattle about how a certain player performed at “tree turdy tree in the turd”

It’s a small victory to be sure, but a victory nonetheless.

Gagner played 2 of the last three minutes of that game. He got double shifted at the end of a blowout. That is GOING to be noticed by an ex player doing the broadcast.

There is a difference between Edzo and the Blackhawks.

Nobody on the Hawks was bitching. And if Edzo is going to go out of his way to be “fair and balanced” then I don’t care if he turned “ex player” in his response. It had nothing to do with the Hawks.

And there is a big difference between rolling lines were Sharp is on the ice trying to “catch up” and players on the winning side double shifting at the end of blowouts.

Again, I want the color guy to point that stuff out. I also want the color guy to point out the goalie interference before Bickell’s penalty. You know, I want the color guy to be, well, the color guy…

As usual, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Sharp had one shift in the last 3 and a half minutes of the game. Kane had two, Bolland one, Toews had none, Hossa had none. Brunette was hurt and not playing.

Lines at the end were:
Kruger/Bolland/Shaw
Stalberg/Kruger/Kane
Bickell/Mayers/Shaw
Stalberg/BMO/Kane
Sharp/Mayers/Shaw
Kruger/BMo/Bickell

With Toews, Hossa and Brunette not taking a shift that is the other 9 forwards taking up the last 6 shifts.

by DaleHalas on Feb 3, 2012 3:33 PM CST up reply actions

I made a simple observation
Patrick Sharp, btw, was out there in the last minute trying to complete his hat trick

you disagree, arguing that the Hawks were “rolling lines” at the end.

Kane was out there for a couple shifts, because, in a PK-heavy game, he doesn’t get his share of minutes (he double-shifted several times last night for this reason, still only ended up with 18 minutes.) Beyond that, the last five shifts were Sharp and schlubs. So yeah, rolling lines, nothing to do with a hattie.

here's the league's clarification

Lucic runs over Miller while the puck is about 50 feet away from him while Miller is attempting to play the actual puck – no call. And Edzo ran down Stals every fricking chance he got last year, and Foley was a willing helpmate – also, remember that Campbell’s not even a 3rd line D – Man.

but to me it seems Crow is venturing to far from his net. it seems to get ridiculous at times. Maybe I’m wrong, and that’s what he did last year also. It would be onteresting to watch some of those games in the playoffs.

crawford picked an awful time to have his worst game of the year.

One thing, and I’m by no means defending Corey’s abysmal performance last night – Vancitydan gave us the low down on Edmonton a few days ago. One thing he stated was that Taylor hall likes to cherry pick. With a two goal lead do you think we might have paid a little more attention to him floating around center ice. Yeah Crow should have stoned him, but why was he so open with a two goal lead. Course management – should I try to carry the lake witha 220 yd 5 wood or lay up, stiff a wedge and drain a putt. We started going for the home run, with a two goal lead a little small ball might have been a better way to “escape” from that hell hole :) Edmonton.

If it were an injury that was causing

this collapse in his play I would think the staff would sit him until he healed. I think this is a combination of things that have built on top of another over the course of the season. If I’m not mistaken Waite tried to have him play a more aggressive game this year which has failed more times than not. His defense has hung him out to dry at times, his rebound and glove ability has seemed to regress from last year, and the soft goals he has allowed have not helped his frame of mind and possibly has eroded his confidence to some extent.

This is not to say that every loss can be, is, or should be hung directly about his neck though. In the end it is a team game and everyone is responsible for doing their part.

Ahhh the Canucks

bringing Oiler and Hawks fans together in their hate, even in the ashes of a game like this.

FTR, I did see a bit and all the highlights, and there were multiple goals where Crawford could have done better. But most of them seemed the kind that out goalies had before we got Melanson. He seems too far out and susceptible to passes and plays getting behind him.

Of course, its a team game, and if you trust the defenseman to take the back door guy ( or the backchecker ) a goalie can look like a brick wall coming out.

I read the sageness of Sam, and I hear you guys, but its not unusual for a goalie to have the sophmore slump and be a terrific goalie.

You just have to decide if he is a Mason, or a Lehtonen. You know you would want the latter right? I do still think he is the latter. He had a very strong game versus us the game before, and probably stole the O/T point with that save on Henrik.

More than anything, I’m just hoping Crow figures out whatever the hell is happening and moves on.

last season Howard had some real shitters

And there’s the still tender loss to Montreal from before the All Star break.
Howard’s solution has been to start fights with people and get damned angry about his performance or really chirpy if he thinks he’s being done dirty by his own defense.
it’s his lack of composure that is his composure in those moments and it keeps him from repeating those performances.

I'm not totally sold on the "we lost to a terrible team" philosophy...

I’ve watched the Oilers grow over the last two years and enjoy watching them play, at least when they’re playing someone else. I didn’t realize Gagner was 22(?). Taylor hall will be torching goalies for a long time to come in this league.

The Oilers have three pretty dangerous lines even without RNH. Dubnyk, despite giving up 4 goals, was pretty solid, I think he turned back 43 shots. I’ll give them credit, when they went down 2-0 they could have mailed it in. Jillian would have been proud of their effort.

What’s the word on Gilbert – has he been out since the carcillo crap.

You probably didn’t hear, but our announcers were getting ticked off the gagner line kept coming out every other shift, (it seemed), with 5 min to go in the thrid. They got excited when Q threw Shaw, mayers Scott, montador and Bickell out there at the end. You know you’ve had your kunch handed to you when you deci de it’s time to beat someone on the other team up. Yeah, that’s the answer.

How the hawks respond tonight will go a long way in determining our fortunes this year. Personally, I’d get q back up on Bushwhacker again tonight. Lot of season left – need to determine if he’s the man or not.

by Say Ramrod on Feb 3, 2012 2:24 AM CST reply actions

Just finished watching the game on delay

so I’m gonna post this before I read what Sam or anyone else has said. Excuse me if any of it has been stated…

I’ve watched enough hockey, and most of you have too, to know that just as the tide can turn on a dime like it did during tonight’s game, the tide can also turn just as quickly from one game to the next. A game like tonight only defines a season in the media.

What I’m saying is that tomorrow the clock resets. This isn’t the 2010 Blackhawks, but even that team went through similar rough patches, coincidentally at about this time of the year. That team I truly EXPECTED to win the Cup, this team I still expect to compete for it. And that’s all you can really hope for year in and year out.

Hawks beat the Wings, the Wings beat the Nucks, the Nucks beat the Sharks, the Shark beat the Oilers, the Oilers beat the Hawks. Does that put the Hawks at the top of the food chain or the bottom? Your mileage may vary…

I’m not sure what the observations were in the game threads (aside from “this is all Bickell’s and Scott’s fault”, I ass-u-me), but IMO poor officiating really took the Hawks out of their game. I don’t think I’ve ever commented on officiating in three seasons on SCH, but It was awful both ways. But that really works into the opposition’s hands now doesn’t it? Ticky tack call here, makeup soft call there. Add 2 or 3 soft goals and the die was cast.

This a team that still looks incredible 5on5. Come playoff time, when the whistles are pocketed, that will mean more than it does now.

There were some glaring issues that were exposed, but they are also mostly issues that are fixable. The biggest issue, aside from Crow struggling, was the 3rd line. The Bolland-Kruger-Shaw experiment/audition has to be over. As much as one has to love Shaw’s energy and the chances he creates, he’s way to overeager on defense. You can go blow for blow with the opposition’s top line and expect to win. Waaay to many prime scoring chances given up there. I thought Kruger was the exception. (yes, some Kruger love from me)

I coach kids baseball and basketball and Shaw reminds me of them. They see the ball and immediately bee line for it, vacating their positions. If you’ve ever watched 5-7 yr olds play, you know what I mean. At least two of those goals can be assigned to Shaw and numerous scoring chances. And he’s also killing Bolland. Bolly was forced to cover for him so many times that it often left him out of position too. Don’t try to do it all kid. #ShawFacts

I’m still holding my breath on Morrison, but he’s fighting it so far. Hopefully it’s that new team smell. Q throwing him at point on the PP didn’t help him look less lost though. Thanks coach.

Holy fuck, Sam and I are on the same wavelength.

It gets worse…
He’s not as concerned about the 2nd pairing as me. (Bizarro world revisited)

I hope it’s just the fact that Leddy and Hjammer have been seeing a lot tougher zone starts and competition than they should, but I’m just as concerned about their lack of ability to dictate the pace of the game and create scoring as their defense.

Hopefully that “instant fix” defender really is out there, because Q isn’t going to stop using them the way he is if only a 5-6 guy is picked up prior to the trade deadline. That won’t free them up to get more offensive zone starts unless Q really trusts that 3rd pairing. Otherwise he needs to change up the pairings, and since game 12 that hasn’t happened. We’ll see.

The Hawks have cap room and can create even more if Hjammer is included in that trade. Last I heard (before Morrisonn signing) is that they had around $7 mill to play with. Isn’t that along with moving Hjammer’s contract enough to sign Suter?
Still agree that he probably won’t end up with the Hawks either way.

The Salary Cap is up 2M more than expected because of a quirk in the exchange rates. Then Sharp gets 2M more next year. Put those together and you don’t have the space to sign Suter. Nobody is expecting the new Cap to be higher next year. Not with a new CBA.

Let’s assume Nashville realizes what we all know: they aren’t going to beat two of the three of Vancouver, San Jose, Detroit and the Blackhawks to get to the Cup Finals. Suter said he’s gone last week… so the Preds probably should deal him.

What would it take to get Suter? Obviously you don’t want to give up much since he’s (probably) a rental, but the Hawks can take on his salary with ease this year. Morin and a pick and if they’d take Hammer, then Hammer? Another blueline prospect like Olsen? Do you not do that deal then?

That first goal on Emery

Shaw ran way out of position to hit Hall when Hjalmarsson already had him taken care of. That was egregiously bad by Shaw, and opened up the passing lane to Gagner.

Yup, that's one of them

Another time he chased the puck below the goal line and went down to the ice. The player was already covered. Shaw never gets back into the play for at least 5 seconds, so the Oil essentially had a 5on4 and scored.

Another time he wandered up high out of position, leaving Bolly with two guys to cover. Shaw was just awful on D. A fast team like Edmonton exposes guys that run out of position like that. I’m pretty sure Shaw was on the ice for at least 4 goals (one was that Hall cherry pick, so not on Shaw), but had a good part of the blame on 3. And the 3rd line only avg’d about 9 min EV TOI. That was a lot of damage in very little time.

Khabibulin Redux?

Is our goaltending situation that bad that it needs to revisit this story once again? Weren’t the four years previous of the Bulin Wall enough to qualm any appetite for his return?

I don’t know what the answer is here other than play Razor a few games a see if he can carry the mail before we head down that road as Crawford is not the same goaltender he was last year. He’s the 1996 Jim Carey and/or Blaine Lacher, the 2003 Andrew Raycroft, or the 2010 Steve Mason. I don’t which and I don’t really care that much anymore as it may be over for him moving forward.

It’s 52 games into the year, the “wait ’til he turns it around” schtick has over-run his course as it’s not going to turn around in the next 10 games or the next 10 after that. He has regressed to the mean that CNS and others that watched him play in Rockford told us about. Now you know why they were so surprised that he became the starter that he became last year.

Tough to witness this, but the reality is – Crawford has become another footnote in the Blackhawks history of failed starting netminders since Ed Belfour. The curse of Eddie lives!

I have never been a fan of Crow.

Every goalie can stand on his head some games. Great goalies do it more often.

My problem with Crow is he come out of his net way too much. With the exception of last year.

Most of the games he would get called up before last. He would let in soft goals regularly and challenge too much.

Last year he had a great year. Chances he does it again playing this aggressive?

Used to be (mid ‘60s) a commercial with the Hamms bear playing goalie in a hockey game. An opponent bears (sorry) down on him and shoots fom right in front of him. It looks like it should be an easy save for him. But he looks down………and there’s a 4" X 3" cutout in the middle of his stick. Goal.

Huet

The loan agreements between the NHL and European teams are not in the CBA or online. So they dictate “when” a player loaned from the NHL to them can be returned to the NHL.

Minimally, after the European’s team season is over, Huet could return to the NHL. As CNS has pointed out, you probably want to wait until after the trade deadline since Huet needs to pass through re-entry waivers.

The Salary cap works on a day by day basis. This means every player on the active roster’s salary is prorated for that day of the season. So Huet’s salary only counts against the cap for every day he is on the Active roster.

by DaleHalas on Feb 3, 2012 9:26 AM CST up reply actions

I respectfully disagree, Waylon. I don’t think there’s anythnig meatheaded in believing that Huet wouldn’t solve any problems. I think there’s a reasonable argument to be had that Huet is still Huet and playing in Switzerland for a reason.

Also, I haven’t been around a ton lately, but isn’t there anything legally keeping Huet there? Can we just nab him because we suck in goal? I would imagine the Swiss team has earned some propietary rights with him as an asset.

www.mjt.org

by ChicoMaki on Feb 3, 2012 8:48 AM CST up reply actions

he is still under contract for the hawks at 5.something

we loaned him to the swiss in order to clear cap space, and remove him from the system (rockford) so that we still can develop our young goalies.

if we bring him back we still have to pay him 5.3? and it counts against the cap

SCH moderator.

by SKeen on Feb 3, 2012 8:52 AM CST up reply actions

We're paying him either way

The only question is the cap space. Would it be prorated at least? Would sending Crow down to Rockford offset that cap hit somewhat?

by madcow256 on Feb 3, 2012 8:55 AM CST up reply actions

You also have to consider waivers

by Johnny Lava on Feb 3, 2012 8:58 AM CST up reply actions

crow is on a 1 way

if we sent him down others could pick him up. yes it would offset but its a little nuts. cap space is about 5.1 ish crow sent down would save us 3, add huet @ 5.6! and we are 1.9 under. high risk move for minimal gains

SCH moderator.

by SKeen on Feb 3, 2012 8:59 AM CST up reply actions

1 way has nothing to do with it

Waivers does though. If a team claims a player off of waivers AFTER the trade deadline, they can’t play him that season. Therefore there would be no reason for another team to claim him and pick up his salary since he’ll be a FA after the season.

So if the Hawks wait, they can bring him back.

  • It doesn’t cost them a penny more than it is now.
  • It doesn’t cost them a roster spot because the roster is unlimited after the trade deadline.
  • And it doesn’t prevent them from making other moves because they can puck up about $22M in contracts and still be under the cap.

I’m not saying he’s the answer, but there’s nothing wrong with bringing in another goalie. NOTHING. And who KNOWS who the “real” Huet is? He was elite for 4 years. He wasn’t for 2. He’s the top goalie in the Swiss A league right now. The answer could be lying in the Hawks own backyard. To not look there would be foolish.

Plus, even during Huet’s meltdown year, his stats were all as good or better than Crow’s are this year. If some think Crow might still come around, what’s so ridiculous that Huet might have pulled it back together after 2 years?

They don't have to "puke up" ANY contracts

I understand all teh salary implications, and that we’re paying him, but I would expect that in the loan agreement there would be a stipulation, or provisions, that prevent us from just taking him back whenever we wanted. It might just be a financial thing—give them a million and we can take him back. I don’t know; it might be stiffer than that, though, or something along the lines of not being able to grab him until their season is done.

I don't quite get the Huet idea

He struggled for 2 years here with much better team defense in front of him than he’d have this season.

I’m not saying he’s completely incapable of being an attempt at a solution, but Huet struggled with his confidence here and he’d let a bad goal snowball into a “goaltending loss”, just like we’re seeing from Crow.

The fans here were on Huet from the start of his Hawks career, and I can’t imagine they’d give him much of a shot the second time around. Maybe I’m putting too much into how the reaction of the Hawks’ fans would impact his play, but I think it’s worth noting.

Honestly though, it wasn't bad, right up until the 3rd period...

Then everything went to shit honestly, as we already know. But on any other night though, four goals usually leads to a win or a shot at OT. This is still a really good team, just on occasional bad form at wrong times (Being an Arsenal fan, it’s been like that for the past seven years…). So what do we do? Well as fans, not much really… Demanding trades and protesting not going to games isn’t going to do a whole lot, because the front office doesn’t read into fans emotions and anybody would be more than happy to take that ticket your about to give up in protest.

In my opinion, I think we should stick with Emery for a little while, maybe scout out some goaltending help, definitely start looking at the market for a new defenseman, and possibly send Crow on an assignment. I’m not sure what that will do to his morale (it can’t be that good to begin with in the first place), but that’s just what I would do.

Good read though from a logical, calm headed standpoint. I can only imagine all the solutions being brought up by the drunken meatheads at the bars…

Huet Crow, but Emery statistaclly did WORSE then Crow after he was relieved.

Crow 23 for 28 in 43:35 (0.821 SV% and 6.88 GAA)
Ray 10 for 13 in16:17 (0.769 SV% and 11.06 GAA)

Sam mentioned taking out 3 games Ray sucked in and his stats are good. Well 3 starts is 20% of his starts, you do the same for Crow you end up with 7 games scrached he has a 0.914 SV% or greater and about a 2.50 GAA.

I know this is not the best comparisson, but at least should give an idea.

If Crow is the problem (and he is at least a big part of it) is Emery the answer?

Not sure though, missed the game went to bed early last had (had a terrible night mare though).

Looked at the Standing Hawks still sitting pretty in the West, would be nicer to be up a few more spots, but they are firmly in a playoff spot, so this is cool.

Anyways, back to business tonight I expect the Hawks to do some curb stomping, and am willing to bet to see Kaner just blast out of his slump.

Oilers are to Hawks as...

…Hurricanes are to Bruins.

When not playing Boston, Carolina is 15-25-9; when not playing Carolina, Boston is 32-11-2.

When they play each other this season, Carolina is 4-0-0.

Why? I have no real idea and neither does anybody in Boston (they’d sure like to know though). Since the Hurricanes aren’t going to sniff a playoff spot and the Bruins are certain to be in, the importance of those weird head-to-head results is arguably fairly limited though.

This is one of those times that I really hate being right but...

…as anybody who knows me will attest, I went into this season saying over and over again that my #1 concern was teh goalie situation. I just wasn’t convinced that, based on very small sample size, that a career minor leaguer of very mediocre (according to reports) ability was the guy to hand over the keys to the kingdom.

Stanbo and the braintrust fucked up big time on this one and, because of that, we now have a season hanging in the balance. Hopefully Emery bails us out the rest of the way since I’d be shocked if we actually went out and got help from Switzerland.

I left the bar with 5 mins left in the 3rd so I missed this

Simply deplorable from Ed Olczyk.

The Ugly

After Gagner’s eighth point, the following exchange took place between the Blackhawks’ broadcast team:

Olczyk: “I think at some point now Pat, you got the Oilers up by four goals, you got guys that got eight points out on the ice…the coach keeps throwing them back out there.”
Foley: “Whatsamatter, I mean why shouldn’t HE? ‘Sposed to play your fourth liners now?! I don’t disagree with that at all!”
Olczyk: “I think somebody needs to take notice of that. I think if you saw off that last faceoff, Marcus Kruger gave a pretty good chop to the hand of, I think it was Gagner that took the faceoff…I think I put this one into the memory bank and when you get the opportunity to…”

Olczyk was cut off by Foley pointing out the goons on the ice for the Blackhawks, matched against the Oilers fourth line. But way to go Ed Olczyk. Applause all around for you. Nothing like advocating for, and approving of purposefully injuring another player because he scored a bunch of goals. Good on you. For his sake, let’s hope your kid doesn’t find success at Penn State and run into an opposing coach with your same mouth-breathing views on the game.

Thanks for making me feel ashamed to be a Hawks fan, Eddie.

that exchange. foley was pissed. was waiting to see how the comments would roll out on sch. no such thing as a mercy rule in professional sports and gooning it up doesn’t do anything but make you look like a sore loser.

after the interruption, i think eddie tried to clarify it a bit and make it more about using a loss like this as motivation in the next match between the teams. problem is, this has happened before, and this was the game we got out of it.

barkers

was a mulligan. a pro goalie’s got to stop that, but it happens from time to time, you just whiff.

the hall one was unfortunate. i didn’t catch a replay, so i didn’t see if the puck changed direction against seabs stick. if so, that coulda been the culprit. otherwise, seabs did his job trying to force him wide. a shovel shot can do some weird things, but for an nhl goalie, that needs to be stopped.

by HjammerTime on Feb 3, 2012 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

Hawks didn't put out there number one power play unit.

Hawks just rolled 4 lines through their power play and AV went bonkers and was wrong there.

Oilers were double shifting the “8 point player” at the end of a blowout game. Totally different scenario and something an ex player like Edzo would “notice.”

by JesusMarianHossa on Feb 3, 2012 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

Edzo pointed it out

He is the analyst and SHOULD point it out when the other team does something like that.

It’s NOT like the Hawks complained or something. That would be different. Edzo is the color analyst. If he doesn’t point that out, he isn’t doing his job.

by DaleHalas on Feb 3, 2012 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

No one is saying otherwise, Dale

His insinuation that the player should be intentionally injured is the fault. Merely saying I agree with Skags on stopping someone instead of complaining in general.

by JesusMarianHossa on Feb 3, 2012 10:24 AM CST up reply actions

You are "reading that" into his comments.

All I read is that “team’s notice” such things. Hawks did NOT goon it up there. Though they did “check” anything that moved which isn’t their normal style.

Personally, I’m not putting a “little guy” out at the end of a blowout to let the other team “check” him but that is just me.

by DaleHalas on Feb 3, 2012 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

he has been getting steadily worse

as a White Sox fan I listen to alot of Hawk and I can take that just fine, Edzo is really starting to get into some dangerous territory here. Suggesting a team respond to obvious dirty play is one thing, doing it because they embarrassed you is another.

I lost most respect for Edzo after the Campbell incident but at this point he is throwing out the red meat to the meatballs worse then the GOP candidates are right now.

by 815Sox on Feb 3, 2012 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

Which Campbell incident?

where he called him a 5th defenseman and said he wasn’t a loss? I ever meet Eddie, I swear to god I’m going to ask him to explain that logic.

by Katherine215 on Feb 3, 2012 10:16 AM CST up reply actions

You guys are really overstating a 5 second sound bite.

With 74 as the Defensive pair and 82 as the offensive pair, Campbell WAS playing a lot of 3rd pair minutes (17/game). Something that Leddy has NOT been doing this year. Sure Campbell came in and also played 10 more minutes on the top two pairs but how do you explain all of that in a 5 second soundbite?

Not that I want to defend Edzo but the feeding frenzy is in full force right now…

by DaleHalas on Feb 3, 2012 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

Good point about the feeding frenzy

It’s either tear Edzo to pieces or focus on the abysmal game and what can be done to fix it. Since fixing the problems with the Hawks is no easy task it’s much easier to gnaw on the carcass formerly known as Eddie O.

Thank you, sir! May I have another?

by Badgerdano on Feb 3, 2012 10:36 AM CST up reply actions

Personally

I don’t think I’ve ever been hard on Edzo here before. I seem to like him more than most here.

But I was very disappointed in him at the end of last night’s game. It wasn’t just the insinuations (clear, I thought) that the Hawks should get goony, but all the big talk about “always remembering” Gagner being put out there. I mean, there’s no point in big talk of any kind there, because they two teams don’t play again and have virtually no chance of meeting in the playoffs. .

For all practical purposes, there won’t be a “next time.” This is it – they had their chance to do something about it, and failed. It was just empty showboating, which, combined with the bloodlust left a bad taste.

by Brian C on Feb 3, 2012 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

The game last night WAS the next time

lest we forget the 9-2 ass pounding we took last time. That is the part that bothers me most. Everyone was saying how important of a game it was, even Kitchen said it while being interviewed before the start of the 2nd. The Hawks had a lot riding on that game last night and weren’t able to keep their foot on the accelerator, whether it be crows fault, the bad penalty calls whatever. With the long road trip and the result from the last tilt against the Oilers the Hawks should of had bloodlust for this game, they didn’t.

Except that they just destroyed EDM at even strength

in terms of puck possession, shots on goal, etc. They looked fired up to me, at least until Crow started letting pucks in too fast for the Hawks offense to keep up with.

by Brian C on Feb 3, 2012 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

The Oilers

still scored three goals after crow was pulled, now I’m not blaming Emery, to me he is the exact opposite type of goalie you want coming into a game cold, with his history of injuries and what he goes through to warm up. But the Hawks (re: NOT JUST Crawford) let in 8 goals last night against the same team that put up 9 against them last time.
That’s all I’m saying, none of that should have happened, but it did, maybe it was because the Hawks took the peddle off after they took the lead, maybe due to Crow having an “off” night or the fact that Bickell and Scott combined for about 10 min of ice time or Bruno went down injured. Those things all happened as well, but they still let in 8, that falls on everyone. And with how important of a game everyone said it was it was disappointing to see that as the result.

Campbell played under 18 minutes

4 times in his final 2 seasons with the Hawks, and two of those he left the game with injuries. He averaged 23 minutes of TOI in both of those seasons, as well. I think it’s pretty easy to say, “He was a pretty important part of our defense as a #2-3 defenseman and his puck moving skills will be missed.” Also, he had the same TOI average as Seabs in 09-10 and 1 minute less in 10-11. So he really was a #2-3.

For the record, I didn’t think Eddie’s comments meant they should goon it up until I read that here. I thought he was pointing out something along the same lines as what AV did.

by Katherine215 on Feb 3, 2012 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

There were so many things wrong with last night

From a coaching standpoint that aren’t even addressed.

The PP, go back to what it was before Sharpie came back from injury. It was doing somewhat well at the time, so I don’t understand why you just take that and blow it up.

Morrison shouldn’t be getting PP time.

Scott shouldn’t be getting PK time, even in a blowout. Take that opportunity to work on your special teams.

Don’t know why Fro sat in place of Bicks or why anyone in the history of hockey ever sat for John Scott. If you can’t trust your guys to get the minutes they should be, don’t play them. It’s that simple. I don’t care what the excuse is, but playing 3 games in 4 nights and not icing a full team is just stupid.

Still waiting for Crawford to get back to his crease. Let Emery start.

Kaner needs to start scoring. I know I’ve said it before, but it’s getting ridiculous now. The kid has 2 goals in his last 19 games and that simply isn’t going to cut it, not for a 6.3 million dollar player. I mean, Sharpie comes back from missing 8 games due to a fractured wrist and outplays a healthy Kane.

Agree with some of this

but I thought Kane had a good game last night. The Hawks scored 4 goals last night, that should be enough to win any other night. Kane’s goal drought is the least of my concerns, is what I’m saying.

Didn't he have a nice assist last night?

As long as he continues his playmaking, I’m happy. We have more than enough weapons that can fill Kane’s goal scoring drought.

See if you can guess what I am now.

I thought Kane hada solid game...

Sharpie doesn’t score his first unless Kaner makes a great defensive paly and then threads the needle. Kane also set Stals up with a beautiful flip pass that Dubnyk saved,

IMO

Kane had an amazing game.

on our PP...

didn’t it appear at times one of our players would skate towards another player. we seemed to be bunched up at times.

That drop pass that Keith loves is begginning to give me gray hairs.

The one zone entry that really bothered me last night was

when that Maginot Line of 4 skaters tried gaining entry at the same time. What the fuck was that?

See if you can guess what I am now.

Wow...

you lost me at “one of the best in the west”. Simply delusional…

Was the Stanley Cup actually a dream? It already seems like a lifetime ago.
