Last night was the last straw for me
regarding Foley and Edzo at least when they are together. Listening to them has gotten just embarrassing except when it’s actively irritating. Separately they’re each now sometimes good and sometimes bad, but when paired up — no, no more.
I’ll look into rigging up the radio feed or something else on the TV, but failing that, silence will be an upgrade. I can follow the action better on my own than while being distracted by their idiocy anyway.

Might as well have. Sigh.

The ability to play to Vancouver’s level, then get trounced by EDM, then take it to SJS (circus trip)…. there are preparation errors here. It isn’t as if the skill level of the team is fluctuating.
Certainly, there are netminder issues. I’m as big a fan of Craw as anyone, but holy shit some of his play is ugly. However, there are just as many issues in front of the net as in the net.
And i don’t want to make veiled tilts at calling on the coaching. I feel like it is the coach’s fault. Poor PP with all-star talent? For years? I watch the Penguin’s PP and wish we looked like that.
I certainly called out the coaching when the lineups were announced

This seems like overanalysis
The Hawks were comfortably in control until Taylor Hall’s goal. It was a 3-3 game heading into the third. It was 5-4 with 14 minutes left. Where have I heard this before: If you don’t have goaltending, you got no shot.

I'm kind of torn about who to "blame" for the PP
Yes, the coaches design the plays or whatever they do and determine the personnel. But I just don’t understand how 4 or 5 of the most talented players on our team – and some of them, in the league – can’t make the plays work.

Why is this so difficult for them? I feel like talent alone should make it not so ugly looking.

Not that easy

Critical juncture
The 2011-12 Blachawks are at a critical juncture.
1. Keith, Seabrook and Hjalmarsson are not enough on defense. Regardless what Foley wants to say, the bottom line is Leddy is in over his head and needs to be moved down to a 3rd pairing. Montador is a bucket of shit. And yes, Campbell is severely missed. Meaning Bowman get off his ass and acquire a legitimate top 4 d-man. Regardless if he needs to give up a king’s ransom to acquire the right guy. This team goes NOWHERE without a major piece added on defense.
2. The powerplay is awful. It just is. Again, the loss of Campbell has been a big blow in this regard. But bottom line the PP is abysmal despite the multiple attempts at re-working.
3. The PK is awful. It is the stuff you’d expect to see in Columbus or Winnipeg.
4. A complementary forward group that is awful on defense. Get beyond the core of Hossa, Toews, Bolland, Kane and Sharp then you expect the other 7 guys to be consistently reliable in two-way play. Other than Frolik, the group left is NOT. And problems are magnfied by the fact that Kane is liability on defense while Sharp a non-factor. This team doesn’t get remotely enough backcheck and two-way play out of the mix of Bickell, Shaw, Brunette, Morrison (ugh in this regard) and especially Stalberg. Frolik is okay and Mayers important in other ways. It’s a big problem when you are too thin on defense and not strong enough in goal.
5. Crawford is an okay goalie. Not a good goalie. Not a goalie who can stand on his head and carry a team. And unless team defense and the PK significantly improves in front of him, then this team ain’t going anywhere with Crawford as the backstop.
===
So what to do?
1. Bowman needs to get a deal done quickly. Overpay to get what you need on defense. The organizational depth is there and the cap flexibility decent enough.
2. Dump Bickell on anybody who will take him.
3. Call back Jimmy Hayes and let him learn how to play two-way hockey on the fly. He can’t be worse than what is being delivered by the aforementioned in this regard.
4. Tell Foley and Edzo to stuff the non-stop Stephan Waite fallatio. Crawford is NOT technically sound to the degree the announcer crew keeps telling us that Waite tells them.
5. Bench Crawford the rest the trip and reevaluate in 14 days.

Good God
The PK is greatly inferior to what shall be required for final 20 game sprint and playoffs. It is wretched to be more precise.
Also, Duncan Keith cannot POSSIBLY continue to log the ridiculous number of shifts and minutes that accumulates. This team is playing with 3 real defenseman. Leddy is not prepared to be a top 4 contributor and is being brutalized way too much on the ice. Montador is a bucket of shit. O’Donnell an old man who maybe can give you 10 minutes for 2 out of 3 games.

I cant believe Im saying this
but he is kinda right on some of that stuff. I think Leddy is fine, but theres a depth issue at D. The Kill does indeed need to be better (remember when Van just completely plowed through our Kill and it won the game for them)? Some of that stuff needs to be addressed by the suits before the playoffs roll around. I think this team can still kick some ass in a series as it stands, but I think it would be easier if there are improvements to those areas.
Oh, and score on the powerplay more. Thats why its there.

We allow the most shots against in the league on the PK
Seeing as our goaltending is [pick your own word] it’s probably not good that we allow a ton of shots to get to the cage.
by JesusMarianHossa on Feb 3, 2012 12:14 PM CST up reply actions
Yes, that's not good but...
This season on PK, 56 ShotsAgainst/60
Last season, 54 ShotsAgainst/60
Not much of a difference between 54 and 56 when the best team only allows 39. The problem was there last season too. And Leddy didn’t play on the PK last year. Keith’s GA/60 on the PK is just as high as Leddy’s.
“Leddy” is too easy of an answer (I know you didn’t say it, I’m just making a general statement). Although I agree he shouldn’t on the PK, is it more a problem with personnel or is it the system?
The fact that Keith’s numbers are just as bad suggests the problem is much larger. One player should not, and does not, have that kind of effect on the dismal numbers. And the top forwards have been pretty much the same as they were in 2010. Toews, Bolland, Hossa, Sharp. Kruger and Mayers get PK time, but they’ve done well.
I guess if they bring in a PK D-man, we’ll have our answer?

- Campbell barely played on the PP last year.
- Kane was a MONSTER defensively last night. The little crack head was stealing pucks like nose candy from a baby. At that rate, he’ll be dead by 40.
- Yeah, have Hayes “learn” how to play defense on the fly. I’m on it. Memo to Stan sent, along with a post script to trade Kane.
- The PK was great last night. They could have just as easily scored 3 shorties. Crow gave up a softie. The Hawks were net 0 for the night even though they were shorthanded 7 times.
- Bickell. Bickell. Bickell.

Crow gave up... a couple softies.
Pretty much at this point, if you go in wide against Craw and circle the net, you’ll have yourself a wide open goal to shoot at. He’s like a magnet getting pulled behind the net only to get hung up on the pipe and unable to get back.
Even if Emery’s hip is 1/4 as bad as they say it is, being positionally sound with limited mobility has to trump being totally out of position. Donnit?
surprise surprise guess what i'm commenting on
but its funny (but not surprising) that you call out Kane on being a liability on the ice after a game when he was a monster defensively and also the best player on the ice for the hawks.

But I’d feel better if looking at the GAA against the Oilers for the year wasn’t like reading my golf handicap.
I agree.
The defense was horrible last night but the only goalie who has given me any ounce of confidence this year has been emery.
Clearly the defense didn’t do enough to stop the flip shots from Barker and Hall. Nor did they do enough to make sure Crawford could stay on his feet. Or to make sure Crawford didn’t try to pile drive Hall with his blocker and forgetting about the puck.
Yup, defense was horrible.

Umm, did you watch the game?
The oilers danced around the hawks like no tomorrow. Crawford was weak and let in softies (as I am admitting) but if you don’t think that was some bad defense I urge you to watch any other team play the oilers.
Nope didn't watch
That’s why I didn’t see the Hawks completely dominate the first and opening half of the second only to see Crawford let the Oil back in, then battle back to tie it only to see two more awful goals in, then make it 5-4 with 14 minutes left only to see that rally snuffed out.
Even with the defense the Hawks played last night which you claim to be horrible, it should’ve been 3-0 heading into the third. I’m not sure what else can realistically be expected of them with the quality of goals Crawford allowed last night.

Corey is the number one point of blame, I totally agree there.
You don’t think the total lack of awareness while taylor hall sneaks behind the defense has anything to do with the players in front of crawford?
how about giving the oilers a 2 on 1 when it was a 3 on 2?
Again, Taylor Hall snuck behind
and Seabrook still caught him and held him to a harmless shot that went in. They can play that aggressive style of defense when their goalie is pulling his weight. But if they’re going to get ECHL-type goaltending, they might as well only forecheck two guys and keep three guys at the red line.
FifthFeather.com
by El Duque's Raft on Feb 3, 2012 11:40 AM CST up reply actions
It has nothing to do with an aggressive forecheck.
And everything to do with bad defensive decisions in and around their own end.
I mean the oilers have a good pp but just look at the way they worked the puck through the hawks box at will. It was a total joke.
It has to do with how aggressive their d can play in the offensive zone
and in the neutral zone. When they’re too concerned about flying around their own crease to protect any kind of shot, it affects everything. And all of that type of play started after Hall’s goal.
Hawks PK went 6 for 7 against one of the best PP’s in the league. That was probably the least of their problems last night.

Not letting the d off the hook.
Halls goal should have been stopped but that is not weak enough where the blackhawks should be that mentally affected. If that was the case the hawks really need to get some mental issues straightened up.
That pp created momentum that led to the hawks demise.
So it was the mystical momentum that did them in
The Boston Bruins defense wouldn’t have fared any better last night with that type of goaltending. It’s not being mentally affected by a soft goal; it’s having to completely change your style of play mid-stream because you don’t want to give up any kind of shot on goal.
FifthFeather.com
by El Duque's Raft on Feb 3, 2012 11:52 AM CST up reply actions
I just feel like that is letting the team off the hook.
Crawford is the guy that I am primarily pointing at but 8 goals and 41 shots, I have to look at the defense a bit too (despite the amount of powerplays the oilers had).
Some nights it probably is
but last night was not one of them. It’s ok to pin the blame solely on the goalie sometimes. That was a Steve Passmore-like performance for Crawford last night, totally unacceptable.

oh the D was bad
I actually think the inconsistency at the blue line is a bigger concern than Corey Crawford down the stretch. But, truth be told, Crow is not that great. I defended him a lot, but I thought he would improve his positioning, and he hasnt really. He lets a lot past him, and hes bailed out by one of forward corps in the league on the scoreboard. That kind of goaltending in a place like columbus, and his record would not be so pretty, and they’d probably be calling him “Mason 2.0”.

He could be
He could not be. All I’m saying is, Johnny T. is a proven commodity. He’s bred to win and has done it at every level, usually while being the best player on the ice. Great two way player, great captain, ridiculous hockey IQ. The only player I’d consider trading him for would be a healthy Crosby, and even then it’d be a tough choice (but that’s my bias speaking).

Really? When did that happen? Aside from the rhetoric from the masses opposed to it?
Hawks were 10-2-2 with 2-8 and 4-7 paired. Leddy was a Plus player and was scoring. They were getting offensive zone starts which took pressure off of Leddy. And Leddy’s speed helped him backstop Keith (who was the attacker, not Leddy) so Keith still was able to be aggressive.
4-7 had the lowest GA/60 when paired in the entire league. They got the defensive zone assignments against the top lines and shut them down quite effectively. With Seabs backing up Hjammer, Nik was much more aggressive on D.
Proven disaster?

thank you. I dont think I would have looked that up. I didnt remember them being terrible, I suggested that from a strategy standpoint. Keith and Leddy’s style is kind of similar, and Keith is the more skilled defenseman, thus if Leddy dicks the dog, Keith has better tools to clean it up.

Ouch.
Pretty sure their whopping minuses created the belief.
??? They were both Pluses
A. Leddy was a +7 after 12 games paired with Keith. At that pace he would be a +30 right now.
B. Since then, Leddy is a -17 paired with Hjammer.
Now I’m no fucking rocket scientist, but I think A is good and B is fucking Hall shit.
But thanks for so effectively proving my original point.

and yes good point, i remember you bringing this up quite often when they were paired up earlier and everyone (myself included to be honest) thought they were stinking it up.
"Orange Mocha Frappuccino!"
Furthermore, since everyone else's production matters too (net effect)...
Keith: +3 with Leddy, would be a +13 today at that pace.
Currently +12
Seabrook: Even with Hjammer
Currently +11
Hjammer: +4 with Seabs, would be a +19 today at that pace.
Currently +5
So the only player with an improved PlusMinus rate is Seabrook. Keith is about the same. Hjammer’s rate has dropped considerably. Leddy’s has fallen off a cliff.
Top 4, thru 12 games: +14
82 game pace: +96
Top 4, since (40 games): +4
82 game pace: +8
Can I get a “Holy fuck”??
It makes sense if you I think about it. Aside from players getting zone starts that better fit their role and style of play, it was also pairing a veteran with a younger/lesser player on each line. Now not only has coach Q moved Leddy from the childproof playroom to the kitchen with an open knife drawer, he has his 5 year old brother egging him on.

I’ve definitely have grown tired that the Leddy-D2K defence pairing doesn’t work, because it does and it makes the most sense in the world with one vet with another young defenceman.
Now if only Q can get his head in gear and pair Lepisto with Montador everything will be fine back there.
Then again if the ‘Hawks continue to lose then this might be Haviland’s choice to make.

Was really interesting when Seabrook was sent to the box.
It looked like Keith and Hjammer took the first shift. Then Leddy and SCOTT took the next. So NOT only was Monty NOT moved up to replace Seabrook on the PK, Scott was ahead of him on the PK. Monty averaged almost 2 minutes of PK time per game last year and he is now behiind Scott on the PK? What happened to this guy?
If the Hawks are going to play left side and right side D-men then Monty has to hold up his side. A trade for a guy on the other side on 5on5 isn’t going to replace Leddy on the PK.
Yup, that's why I keep saying the defensive pairing solution is a jigsaw puzzle.
Hawks brought in the guy they thought was the best avaialbl for their “needs.” They probably should’ve put more consideration into getting a guy who could skate opposite Leddy if they were determined to live or die with Leddy as #3.

Something happened to this guy.
The Buf fans stated that Monty was a different player the second half of last year from the first. AND he has been that second half player here.
I personally don't see him being as "awful" on defense as Q does
but I definitely don’t see the gritty player I thought the Hawks were getting. IMO, he right there with Leddy in terms of physicality. The only time I see him clearing bodies from the crease (what was supposed to be one of his strong points) is AFTER the whistle or after a goal is scored.

Yup times 2 for me.
I’d really like to see the Hawks do three different things on special teams:
On the PP the primary thing I would change (if blessed with the powers to make it so) is drop the insistence on having a man on, or behind, the goaline. I don’t want to get into too much PP theory (which I’ve done in past threads), but the reasoning is more than just "the back door attempt isn’t working. That much is obvious. The reason it’s not working is because teams have recognized that despite having two incredibly dangerous players (Toews/Kane) manning the goaline and the half-wall, they can both be covered with one defender in a standard box. Given their talents, it’s understandable that normal defensive instincts would draw a second defender thereby collapsing the box and opening either A; a backdoor seam (hello Sharp) or B; a lane for the point-man along the wall to creep in (wherein he will get a great opportunity) If B happens and one of the other two defenders collapse on him, two other seams open (C; goaline tap-in or D; easy one-timer for the other D-man) depending on which way the coverage breaks down. I’d be willing to bet that teams have broken down the video and realised that having Toews below the goaline is akin to him removing himself from the play. Motion behind the net along the goaline creates confusion with the goalies reads (he can’t see the positioning of shooters in front of him) but isolating yourself in a static position has a nullifying effect on that player. What the Hawks are doing is daring teams to try and cover their two most dangerous players 1-on-1 and nobody’s biting anymore. By returning to a more typical system with slot presence and wingers at the top-of-the-circles/hash-marks, then having players move dynamically through the seams, they would create more coverage confusion which should create unintended 1-on-1 coverage resulting in someone being open in a dangerous position.
Second, way more speed/depth at zone entry from the men without the puck. This can be on both the dump in and carried entries. The first guy should go to where the Hawks DON’T intend to place the puck (confusion) as this will draw a defender out of position allowing the Hawks to set-up where they want to control the play form. On dump-ins it kind of goes without saying that you’re just giving the puck away if you don’t chase with speed and puck support.
On the PK side, the killers look completely vexed when dealing with a precise ring dump and forward speed. I say this because nearly every time the ring-in beats the goalie (and the defenseman on the side that the puck is going to end up on) the Hawks forward along the wall will make the first contact with the puck but then proceed to get swallowed up by the forecheck. It’s unaceptable, for a couple of reasons. If the ring beats the goalie (and the d-man) behind the net, the d-man must hold his position below the goaline (or close to the corner but still below the goaline). He MUST NOT turn 180º and give chase to the puck. The reasoning for this is that by chasing the puck back up along the wall to the hashmarks he’s eliminating his own time and space and he’s placing himself (the forwards outlet) right on the forward. The net result is that his only play is to force the puck up the wall at three opposing players (1st forecheck, puck support and the d-man holding the blue). If he stops behind the goaline, the forward can reverse the puck back to him and he’s instantly bought himself about 20 feet of space to clear the puck (or he can swing it behind the net to his partner who should have more time). To me these seem like simple things that are not being preached, practiced, or played – and it’s killing them. The best PK is one that doesn’t even allow the other team to set-up.
You are next.

Gretzky got 8 points twice in his career (both in the same season) Coffey once. Mario has the most 8 point games with three (all in one season). It has only been done 16 times by 13 players, 13 of those occurred between 1976-1989. Only Wayne and Mario had multiple 8-point games. The 1989-2012 time between 8 point games was the longest ahead of going from 1954-1976 without an 8 point game. Petr and Anton St’astny both recorded an 8 point game in the same game for QUE on 2-22-81 vs WSH.

I was thinking the Hawks had a real possiblity of trading for Sam Gagner….guess that isn’t hapening now…
Im too lazy to make a signature
Those tires have been kicked
for a while now in the rumors of the league. I would like to see him and Kaner reunited to see what would happen I’m just not sure another small forward is what the Hawks need. Either way, last night’s performance may actually get teams more interested in him and be willing to offer more in return. Then again interested teams may say “8 points WOW! trading gagner...
he’s young, obviously has upside, been in their org… why trade him? And if they did, why to us, for more prospects they’ll just have to wait longer on?
sooner or later, edmonton has to stop rebuilding and be good, right?
I agree. I was just saying that rumors
regarding the Hawks supposed interest in him have been circulating since as early as the end of October. From what I gather it was his lack of production that the Oil organization was unhappy with which led to his being scratched for a number of games early in the year. I haven’t seen his being mentioned in trade talks nearly as often as it had been in the past.

I liked the Theory of Ice piece today
I recall sitting next to four fans of hispanic persausion when we played calgary in the playoffs. They didn’t speak real good English, didn’t know squat about hockey theory – they just like the guys in red skating around real fast and occasionally blasting somebody.
