Seattle could really work out well
the rivalry alone with the Nooks and the other West coast teams could become something special. Less bitching about travel, except from the Nooks.
Hope they build over or near the current arena
It’s in a beautiful part of Seattle.

Which part?
The goalies are fine or that the Hawks need to score more?

This is a good place to start
If we’re all in agreement this season is considered "Stanley Cup or Bust" for the Blackhawks, then I can forget about discussing anything in between.
It’s Stanley Cup or Bust??? Does anyone actually think that? Like we’re just going to roll right over St Louis, Scum, Vancouver, Nashville, San Jose or (God help us if they make the playoffs) Edmonton with Corey Crawford and Ray Emery? So far this season, I can’t think of either goalie outplaying the goalie at the other end of the ice. They’ve been good enough to win. It’s only going to get harder from here on out.
All of those top teams possess a great goalie. Not just good. Not just OK as long as the team in front of him plays good defense. We’ll be one of the few teams that makes the playoffs with suspect goalies, and in our own division, I’m not sure who I trust less- Steve Mason or Corey Crawford.
Anything can happen but winning the Cup with Ray Emery and (this years version of) Corey Crawford is not very likely.
Yes special teams are bad (especially the PK- where the goalie needs to step up). Yes Hossa isn’t scoring (but he plays great defense). There are a lot of things that need tweaking. The only problem is, all the other teams in the Western Conference who I mentioned, all have needed tweaking from time to time. The difference is: they have a goalie who has had to carry them, when they needed to be carried. We haven’t seen that from our goalies and I don’t know if they’re even capable.
Emery is a capable backup. Crawford is a hot mess. IMO- It’s find a goalie or bust.
by great goalie and Van
you mean Ginger Jesus and not Lu, right? Because I thought it would be a cold day in hell before a Lu compliment would be found on here.

Well...
If it makes you feel better, Lu is a great goalie who can stand on his head and steal a game or two. And then the very next game he pisses down his leg inexplicably. I don’t know if he’ll ever win a championship because of that.
I have yet to see Corey Crawford steal a game. At least… this year.

Hoss isn't scoring?
That’s news to me. 20 goals, 53 points in 52 games. Only top 6 guy that isn’t scoring is Kaner.
it was specifically goals in the last 3 games, which is true actually, but not fair to what Hossa does beyond that.
I think Kane has 2 in the last nine, but more assists (11G, 33A, 44Pts, which isn’t ideal but he’s not exactly just sitting there drooling in the corner, and would have more if other players could finish his set ups)
And as noted below, he wasn’t actually serious

if i may suggest a place to begin, how about
If you’re looking for something to complain about in regards to this losing streak, stick to the power play that has gone 1 for 12 during the skid. Or the fact Marian Hossa doesn’t have a point in the last three games.

I appreciate everyone's feedback
My point was simply to say that Bowman isn’t going to make a move, and not that the ‘Hawks don’t NEED to make a move. Whether we feel the ‘Hawks need a new goaltender seems irrelevant to what Bowman’s track record is in terms of handling the goatlending situation.
And the Marian Hossa thing was a joke. It was meant to show that it’s more feasible to complain about Hossa not scoring than it is to lobby for a trade that won’t happen.
Truthfully, I do appreciate all the feedback though.
Not sure why the response was what it was.
Hawks have 4 options for goalie this year. Don’t see it coming from outside the organization either.
Though I will say, I’m not of the opinion the Hawks are one of the favorites for the cup this year. They are only in the second year of dealing with their salary cap woes. They had to give up a bunch of talent and only really got picks and players in return that are years away.
This year they finally got the cap space to add some secondary players. So they have made progress in that regard. I just think it is unrealistic to think you can just go out and get exactly what you need just because you now have the money to spend.
Hawks are competing with teams that have 7, 8 or even 9 forwards making 1.5M or more. Hawks had their core 5 for most of last year and that’s it. They have now added Frolik, Brunette and Monty on D. They are just going to have to do better than that to be a serious contender.
Agreed...
but it sure doesn’t seem like people are thinking along those lines. My “Cup or Bust” reference was in terms of how it seems the majority of the fans are thinking, given the reaction after each loss to trade players who should be a part of the future for quick fixes to compete for a Cup this season.

Oh oh, someone flipped on the Bartl-man signal over Gotham City!
I agree with your point that Stan probably isn’t making a move. Heck, Stan said it himself, so it’s an easy position to defend. But I disagree that you can assume Bowman has a “trend” and your reasons as to why.
If you’ve yet to recognize a trend in the Stan Bowman era, goaltending is not his top priority … Bowman took over, and Antti Niemi – a previously unknown – ends up being in net for the Blackhawks’ first Stanley Cup since 1961. When Niemi wanted to get paid, he went back on the cheap side with Marty Turco. And when he didn’t pan out, Crawford was the guy. His three-year, $8 million contract is modest at best.To associate Bowman taking over with Niemi “ending up being in net” is pairing two events that aren’t congruent. The Hawks did indeed have a big money goalie that season – and that Team was assembled by Tallon, not Bowman. Hawks were ranked 19th in the league in team Sv%, but Niemi had a respectable .912 Sv%. With slightly below average goaltending, the Hawks were still 5th in the league in GAA (2.43) and had one of the best offenses. Yes, that team could win with average goaltending. Very, very different situation than exists this year.
This year, the Hawks are 26th in team Sv%, without one goaltender significantly outperforming the other, and 25th in GAA.
And Bowman didn’t just sign Turco instead of Niemi because “Niemi wanted to get paid.” Any knowledgeable fan knows the situation (cap restraints, Hjammer’s offer) was much more complicated than that. Turco was all the Hawks could afford without further gutting the team. Then to call Crawford’s contract “modest at best” when it was actually less than what Niemi was supposedly asking, is nothing short of confusing.
I highly doubt Stan is content with the current goaltending situation. And I doubt he gave Crow that contract expecting “mediocre” would be good enough. Bowman not making a move likely has MUCH more to do with economics and the fact they gave Crawford a 3 yr contract than “a trend” or Stan being content. No GM is going to come out and say “Hey, we’re still operating in the red and paying to bury two contracts. But we’re still filling the seats and will make the playoffs with what we’ve got.” The Hawks are “hoping” Crawford will come out of his funk. They’ve got 8 million reason to do so. It’s the reality of the business aspect of professional sports.
Couple that with the fact that there is only one goaltender who might be on the market who is worth having (Nabbie) and that’s why Stan is publicly standing behind his goaltender. I wouldn’t expect a GM to say anything less.

Well, there's some "glossing over" that I disagree with
In fact, all of us can point to bad goals from him and Emery and use them as ammo or a deal. I can bet, though, many of those who are reading this and cringing aren’t thinking about the tough saves they made as well. It would be too hard to defend their point if they did.
Those complaining the Blackhawks are going to have to win high-scoring contests shouldn’t be complaining against something that’s normal.
But my biggest disagreement is with the article on BU he linked to, to support his argument. That team was top 10 in a lot of categories.
That team was 4th in PK%. This team is 27th.
That team was 1st at the time in GAA. This team is 24th.
The situation is COMPLETELY different.
The thing is, meatheads, the Blackhawks statistically compare to recent Stanley Cup champions — even in goaltending. The reason idiot fans and stupid "experts" talk about the goaltending "situation" is because there isn’t much else to complain about with this Blackhawks team.
He uses regular season goalie stats to support what happened in the postseason those years. Yes, you can only use regular season stats for the current season, but the postseason data is there for prior years. And the data is flawed further because it uses team Sv% instead of the Sv%s of the starting goalies (and the Hawks don’t have a standout goalie). When you go with individual performance – and couple it with GAA which also takes into account the team’s defense, then the stats of past Stanley Cup champions look quite different.

Only two Stanley Cup champions in the past 10 years had a goalie with a Sv% below .920. And the average GAA of those winners was between 2nd and 3rd.
So when you compare those past champions with where the Hawks are right now, I’m not sure how anyone feels obliged to call those who disagrees a meathead, meatball, or bandwagoner? It would seem they’re not the ones ignoring facts.

Nothing to worry about
Crawford thinks he’s doing everything right…
The Blackhawks goaltender feels fine physically, his technique has been sound and his confidence hasn’t wavered.
And a big “DUH” to this:
“A lot of people just look at (statistics) and determine the kind of player or goaltender you are just by your numbers. I think I’m way better than what those numbers say. I just have to go out and prove it. If I’m consistent, those numbers will turn around.”Everything is A-OK, stats be damned!
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
well i'm glad he feels fine physically and that his confidence hasn't wavered
but his technique has not seemed sound to me. I’m not, nor have I ever been a goalie, but to me he seems too aggressive which ends up with him out of position (sometimes ridiculously out of position) and out to far, which results in him not being able to make adjustments when things get crazy and close. Also, rebound control.

The first step to solving a problem
is admitting there is a problem. Corey – can you hear me?
i don't want
to get into a convo about corey’s technique, but i figured this article might get taken a bit out of context. to me, the sentence before the one that is bold is what really matters. at this point, there is not going to be any major changes to crows technique, it is all going to be fine tuning on specific situations. case in point, i was at practice yesterday, and waite was working with crow on wraparounds and not positioning or depth. emery was in net for battle drills (which leads me to believe crow will be in net against the avs, and q will prolly start alternating until we get a win and start stringing a few together).
what it all will boil down to is crow going out there and getting the job done. and most of that is going to be done in his head, imo. no matter what he says about his confidence, in the game, when things are looking ugly, he’s gonna have to rise to the occasion. how many times has he done that this season? at this point in the season, he’s just going to have to get us in the win column no matter the cost, otherwise, i can actually see emery being the guy in net for the stretch run, cause corey just isn’t making those clutch saves to give us a chance to get a w.
True
I just have to go out and prove it.
How many more losses do we give him before we conclude he can not prove it? It’s not as though this is his first go around at trying to prove he’s the guy…

Shaw replacing Stalberg on the top line today
Quenneville is testing my patience with this undersized, underskilled, David Eckstein of hockey. You don’t bat David Eckstein 3rd and you don’t put Andrew Shaw on the top line or the 1st powerplay unit.

Very confused by this.
Stalberg’s fore-checking and back-checking has been pretty damn good I think, so why put shaw on that line?
To me shaw is not much more than a physical presence with a lot of heart and a willingness to go to the net.
congree
stalberg/toews/kane was quite threatening – why break them up?
Or maybe Q

by putmeinthemadhouse on Feb 6, 2012 1:59 PM CST up reply actions
IMO it makes complete sense
Q’s been trying to stoke the offensive output of the 3rd line for months now. That’s why he’s put less than stellar defensive players on that line like Brunette, Shaw and Hayes. It’s the two-way game of the 3rd line that has made it so dangerous in years past.
Stalberg had a couple of games there too and did so show chemistry with Bickell and Bolland. They had quite a few scoring chances, just couldn’t dent twine. Stals is no worse defensively than any of those other guys and his scoring threat should keep the opposition honest.
I’ve commented on how I’d like to see Stals on the 3rd line, so I’m obviously on board to see how it pans out.

Where's CNS? I need him to back me up on this.
If we’re breaking up the top line, which I don’t want to but now we’re playing the hypothetical game, why are we putting Shaw up top? OK, already posed that question. Here’s a new one…
Shaw is probably put up top because he’s “physical” or a “space creator.” I may not agree with those things, at all, but if you want that type of player up there then let it be Bryan Bickell. He’s been terrible most of the campaign, I concede that. Still, if he can’t produce with 88-19 then he’s probably not deserving of NHL playing time. Give him a chance. Maybe it lights the fire under his hockey pants. Otherwise, leave Stals out there where he’s been tremendous and stop putting some scrappy 5th round pick that’s flashed the pan on the top line.
I really don’t hate Shaw. I just hate the way he’s being used.
by JesusMarianHossa on Feb 6, 2012 1:27 PM CST reply actions
if Andrew Shaw is on your top line then your team..
tum-te-tums…
McCormack & Richard Tauber are singing by the bed....
Makes sense to me.
Outside of the core forwards, the top two corsi guys on the team are Stalberg and then Shaw. Hawks want a guy that can go get the puck to play with DDN.
As for the third line, the Hawks have been experimenting with an offensive third line. With Bolland on the third, Q would normally take Bolland’s line off the ice if it wasn’t matched with a top two opponent line. With Bolland playing with Hossa, then Toews and Bolland split the opponents top two lines and BMo is now playing against the other teams third line.
Also, if you are looking to add a player it might be easier to find a third line scoring winger more than a two way guy to play with Bolland.
Shaw's been a hot mess defensively on the 3rd line
but he’s definitely been eager (not Ben) in the offensive zone. IMO, Q had to get Shaw off the 3rd line, but he still wants an player with some offense there (Stals). With a subsequent top line hole needing to be filled, Shaw is really the only option.
Bickell’s still trying to claw his way out of the doghouse, so I don’t see him there. Plus, he’s not a guy who creates space.
