USA Hockey Hall Of Fame Design

Hey guys this is my first fan post. I've been part of the SBnation community for a long time, mostly following Southsidesox since 06, And recently SCH. I must say I love SCH. So the reason for my post is because I am a studying Architecture Student. My semester project is to design a hypothetical relocation of the USA Hockey Hall of Fame from Eveleth, Minnesota to Chicago. The reason why I am posting is for hardcore hockey fans to have a voice in what they think the hall of fame should be! Details after the Jump!

So basically the current Halls is lame and super introverted. It looks like a lame post office. So the proposed new one for my class is hypothetically to be located at Grand & Lake Shore Drive on the southwest block. Right now there are some high rises up and going up and useless dog park. On this site we are to have 20,000 sqft Pavilion for the Hall of fame, 60,000 sqft plaza known as "Lord Stanley's Plaza," ponds for pond hockey championships and fully functional exterior ice sheet at NHL regulation size for future All Star Games and Winter Classics. DISCLAIMER: If you haven't figured out by now this is not a real situation, its just pretend. So lets have some fun. I want you guys to help me out. Post some things you think this Hall of Fame/Plaza/Stadium must have to be successful. Also be creative this has to be a functional site all year round so if you think of other multipurpose uses, ie concerts? Community activities?

Looking Forward to your ideas, thanks in advanced and for what its worth if I get some cool ideas and have good response I will incorporate this post and subsequent responses in my Final Presentation so you can have some credit in the process as well!

Your idea is interesting though. I do think an outdoor rink would be fun although how would it survive the summer? Unless it doubled as a roller-hockey rink, that’d be neat.

I thought it would put it towards the top of the

recent activity filter. Like I said i’m new to this fan post thing. And Yeah the ice rink surviving the summer is an interesting problem. They do have those artificial ice sheets now though I know the NHL would never allow a game on that. They have one these at ice land in Niles now if your familiar. That roller rink is something cool I didn’t exactly think of. What about the actually hall of fame part? Any ideas on what you think would make that a really awesome space?

can it be interactive? a game area, theater where you can watch cup winning games, etc...?

I am pondering the idea of a some sort of videoboard façade similar to the fountains at millennium park that can be seen from the drive and other surrounding buildings. But also when you get close the names of cup winners and hall of famers are engraved to it as well. Giving it interaction on a large and small scale

i like ahnfire's idea of it converting into a floor/roller hockey rink

concerts and stuff as you suggested would be a good use of the space as well

the bull fighting rink is interesting

Problem solved

Bull fighting on ice. It gives the bull fighter on skates a distinct advantage over the bull, which is definitely American…unless the bull also learns how to skate. OMG…their learning how to skate, people! Hide the hamburgers!

The HOF in Toronto has a lot of great interactive stuff (superb) and the Cup in the Church part is sublime

The portion of the HOF with the players’ faces etched into the crystal plaques and the Cup sitting under the stained glass dome of the old church building is the pinnacle of HOF ideas. If yuo can come close to a feature like that – you’d have a winner

Fighting stupidity since 1958 (its a much bigger project than originally envisioned).
Confusion will be my epitaph.

And I think it may be a possiblity in the future once this generation of American players finishes up with more and more winning cups and hell perhaps a Gold, if the NHLers are allowed to play.. Please Please incorperate a big part to the 96 World Cup team!
