As expected, Stan Bowman and the Blackhawks pretty much stayed pat at the trade deadline. He made 3 minor moves including adding veteran Michal Handzus to the fold. The Hawks could use a 2nd line center, but there wasn't one out there for the taking. Derek Roy was available, but it most likely would have cost Adam Clendening and a 2nd round pick. I'm sorry but is it not worth it for a guy that doesn't make you much better than what you already have in place i.e. Dave Bolland. Let's not act like Stan Bowman didn't walk into work today and didn't make any phone calls. You see a lot of outcry about why Bowman didn't go after "this guy" or "that guy". Who says he didn't?

If there is one thing I have learned about StanBo since he got here is that he always has a plan and he sticks to it. He came into the deadline knowing exactly what he was willing to part with and stuck to it. He is always mindful of the future. He had to break up a Stanley Cup winning team because of the salary cap, a mess he did not create. Do you think he wants to go through that again? He was able to keep his young core together, and with a plan based on young talent and patience, in just two years he got the Hawks back to the top of the NHL. Stan is never pressured into making a move just for the sake of making a move. If it doesn't fit into his plan, he doesn't do it. Look at the cost of some of the players that got moved today. Are any of them worth risking long term future success? With the salary cap going down, draft picks and prospects become even more valuable.

The Hawks have enough on their roster right now to win the Stanley Cup. Sure they have holes, but they have less holes than most of the teams in the NHL. They are one of the few teams that can roll out 4 lines every night during the playoffs. Bowman didn't make any costly deals today because he didn't have to. As long as he keeps drafting like he has been he won't ever have to be a major player at the trade deadline. If you still think Stan Bowman has not done a good job as Blackhawks general manager, then you haven't been paying attention.
