Grant expansion franchises to Kansas City and Seattle.
Relocate Coyotes from Pheonix to Quebec City.
Realign into 8 divisions of 4 teams each:
Northeast - Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec and Toronto.
Southeast - Carolina, Florida, Nashville and Tampa Bay.
Metro - Buffalo, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington.
Central - Chicago, Columbus, Detroit and Minnesota.
Southwest - Colorado, Dallas, Kansas City and Saint Louis.
Northwest - Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg.
Pacific - Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose and Seattle.
Each team plays a 74 game regular season:
3 Home and 3 road games vs. 3 division rivals = 18 games.
1 home and 1 road game vs. 28 other opponents = 56 games.
The regular season begins in September and ends in March, while the Stanley Cup Finals never extends beyond Memorial Day.
Division winners are seeded 1 thru 8, while 8 wild cards are seeded 9 thru 16, regardless of division, meaning that all 4 teams from 2 divisions could qualify, while only 1 team from 5 other divisions qualify. It also means that the Blackhawks and Red Wings, or any other 2 teams for that matter, could meet in the Stanley Cup Finals.
