2014 NHL Draft : Day 2 Recap

Jeff Zelevansky

Friday started off with three contract extensions and Saturday started with a trade.  Stan Bowman did not have a pick in the second round so he shipped Brandon Bollig off to Calgary for their third round pick.  Not bad turning an undrafted player into the 83rd pick in this year's entry draft.

Bowman used that pick to select right winger Matheson Iacopelli, a 6'2/192 lbs forward from Woodhaven, MI.  Iacopelli scored 41 goals and added 23 assists in 58 games for Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL.  He will be playing for the Broncos of Western Michigan next season.

FIve picks later, Bowman selected Beau Starrett, who will play for Cornell University in the fall.  The 6'1/191 lbs LW had 47 points (11 G, 36 A) in 48 games for the South Shore Kings of the USPHL. Starrett is known for his hard hitting, defensive style of play.  Check out this write up on Starrett from our friends over at SB Nation College Hockey.

The Blackhawks went right back to the USHL when they selected Fredrik Olofsson with the 98th overall pick.  The native of Sweden put up four goals and 11 assists in 24 games with the Chicago Steel last season.  The 6'1/185 lbs left winger is set to play for Colorado College in the fall.  He will be joining his brother Gustav in Colorado, who was drafted by the Minnesota in 2nd round a year ago.

Stan Bowman had two picks in the 5th round.  He went back to Eden Prairie, MN, the home of Nick Leddy, to draft 5'11/165 lbs, left handed defenseman Luc Snuggerud with the 141st overall pick.  Scouts say he is quick to get the puck out of the zone with a pass or by his skates.  He likes to join the rush when he can and contributes on the power play.  He is committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha in the fall.  His uncle Dave Snuggerud played on the 1988 US Olympic team and spent some time with the Flyers, Sabres and Sharks. Seven picks later they snagged big Swedish defenseman Andreas Soderberg.  The 6'4/200 lbs, left handed defenseman was rated as the 29th overall European skater before the draft.

The Blackhawks had back to back picks (178 & 179) in the sixth round.  They chose Dylan Sikura, a 5'10 center who put up 92 points in two seasons with Aurora of the OJHL.  Bowman used the very next pick to select a big Russian goaltender Ivan Nalimov.

Stan ended his draft by selecting 6'2/185 lbs right winger Jack Ramsey.  His father Mike was on the 1980 Miracle on Ice Olympic team and is a member of the US Hockey Hall of Fame.
