It's finally here, an opportunity that many of us doubted we'd ever see as recently as four years ago, but with a win tonight, the Chicago Blackhawks can win the Stanley Cup.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Both recent and distant histories make it abundantly clear that tonight will be no easy task. The Hawks have not won the Stanley Cup in 49 years. The last time they were this close, they took a 3 games to 2 lead into the opponent's building with an opportunity to clinch in Game 6 in 1971 against the Montreal Canadiens, and the Hawks painfully lost both that game and the resultant Game 7 to give the Habs the Cup. A similar fate befell Scum just last year, unable to close out Sid, Geno, and the Pens in the Igloo, and then fell in Game 7 back at The Joe. Coming into tonight's game, the Hawks have lost 10 straight games in Philadelphia, their last victory coming in November of 1996. They will be facing a Flyers team that is 9-1 at home this post season, with a starting goalie in Michael Leighton who has yet to lose on home ice this post season. Furthermore, these Flyers have already won four games in which they could have been eliminated - all of them coming in successive fashion in their historic comeback against the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, which contained a game 7 three goal comeback from the Flyers as the cherry on top.

But no one will remember any of those things should the Hawks emerge from the Wachovia Center with Win 16.

Prior to Game 5 Joel Quenneville jumbled his lines, seperating the line of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, and Dustin Byfuglien, putting them now on three seperate lines in the hopes of getting at least one, maybe two of them away from being matched up against Chris Pronger, who to that point had rendered the trio for the most part ineffective. Quenneville succeeded not only in that goal, but in also making Pronger move far more in his defensive zone, something he had not had to do previously in punishing Buff around the net. The result was more than likely the worst game of the future Hall of Famer Pronger's career. Don't expect a repeat performance out of Philadelphia Dick Cheese tonight; he's far too big of a competitior and too great of a hockey player to give anything less than an exceptional performance tonight. Similarly, the Hawks will need to weather an early onslaught of the entire Flyer attack in the opening period, as they will be spurred on by an energetic and likely somewhat nervous (but no doubt smelly) crowd on hand. The line of Danny Briere, Scott Hartnell, and Ville Leino has run wild all series long, and they will need to be contained. Briere cannot be allowed to set up shop behind the net where he likes to operate, as well as sneak out from behind for back-door plays, Harntell needs to be kept at a distance from Antti Niemi, and Leino needs to be kept from doing whatever the fuck it is he's been doing that's suddenly turned him into Pat Fucking LaFontaine. Hawk forwards will also need to front the Flyers point men better, as far too many shots were fired from the blue line and found their way to Flyer tape in Games 3 and 4.

For our Men of Four Feathers, while a repeat performance of Sunday is simple enough to ask for, doing so is the trick, isn't it? The Hawks got scoring from up and down the lineup, and they did so by pushing the pace, initiating contact with Flyers defensemen (specifically Pronger), and clean, controlled breakouts, and all of those things will need to be in place for a win this evening. On top of that, Niemi will need to be markedly better than he was on Sunday, as hell is assuredly coming to breakfast in the first 10 to 12 minutes of the first period. Scoring first is of paramount importance tonight to both take the crowd out of the game and to allow doubt to creep back into the minds of the Flyers, to however miniscule degree given their resilience to this point in the playoffs. Not far behind will be the special teams and face off battles, both of which the Hawks will need to improve upon from their last appearance at the Wachovia Center. There's not much left to say past that.

One win remaining. Let's go Hawks.

So how many times since Friday night have you said or heard something along the lines of "It's not a series until the home team loses"?  Quite a few I'd imagine, I know I have.  But maybe like me, you're just sick of it at this point.  Now we're here at a best of 3 series with the Hawks obviously still holding the home ice advantage that has been oh so crucial in this series.

Word out of the morning skate was Ladd was resting his shoulder but that he will play tonight after having a decent game Friday (from the little bit of the game I saw anyway).  The lines also didn't seem to change with Buff still staying up on the top line with Daydream Nation.  Jessie Rogers thinks that's all mind games though.  Sam made the call for Q to jumble things up and I can't say I disagree.  We know Q has no problem changing things up but the real question will be what moves he'll make.  Does he simply drop Byfuglien off the top line or does he split up Toews and Kane?  The Hawks need someway to get around Pronger and either of those scenarios could work. Buff is obviously losing the battle that everyone was hyping before the series and it's dragging Toews and Kane down with him (or Pronger could just be dominating them too).  One way or the other, Q will be trying to get them away from that gap-toothed behemoth. We likely won't see what Q's got up his sleeves until game time.

At home Q is going to get the match-ups he wants which will help since the Flyers were able to take advantage of the quick changes the Hawks made.  There's no need to go into how important the game is going to be, it's the season and it's likely the series.  Toews and the rest of the Hawks have been saying the right things to the press, now it's time for them to get out there and show it on the ice.

Lets Go Hawks

The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw: Hawks at Flyers Game 4 Preview/Pregame Thread/Group Therapy

Images_medium vs. Images_medium

GAMETIME: 7pm Central
TV/RADIO: VS., CBC, WGN 720 (Zambrano blowing up will be on WIND)

McClure says you lot are jumping off the walls in the threads today, so we'll get this up a little earlier than usual.  Obviously, the big one is tonight.  As you've seen elsewhere, 24 of the previous 27 Stanley Cup champs have won Game 4.  There is a large difference between coming home 3-1 with the man in the black hood warming up his shoulders and coming back 2-2 with the Flyers having all the momentum.  I know which I'd prefer.

First things first, on the Hawks side Andrew "Mountain" Ladd is a gametime decision (aren't we all?).  He didn't skate with any particular line during the morning skate, but don't read too much into that.  I expect Ladd to be in the lineup, and back on Bolland's and Versteeg's wing.  If I have to guess, I'd imagine Burish sits and Kopecky moves to the 4th line, but I don't want to put myself on a ledge when it comes to guessing what Coach Q is going to do.  For the Flyers, CarBomb is sitting, big shock I know.  Are you surprised that in a game where the refs may be tightening things up that the biggest doofus on either team is in the pressbox?

We've been speculating on what Q might do to unlock Toews and Byfuglien.  I get the feeling there's a shuffle in our future.  Perhaps Brouwer's greater mobility would be an asset on the top line, making Pronger move far more than he has with Buff.  Maybe you reunite the Hammer of Thor line with Hossa, Toews, and Sharp, and thus make Laviolette decide which of Toews and Kane he wants to let roam free in a Pronger-less ice.  Or maybe you just leave it as it is, and decide that you're the better team, and it doesn't matter.

What I'd like to see, and know I won't, is less adherence to all the matchy-uppy Q tendencies.  Make your lineup changes however you want, but then ice the team and make the Flyers adjust to you.  Honestly, what line match against the Flyers is so scary?  Who of Briere, Richards, and Giroux can Toews not handle (the answer so far is Briere, but that won't last).  Sharp?  Bolland?  Whatever.  We're going to go do our thing, you try and stop it.  Another thing that has to happen is Brian Campbell's icetime must be greater than Brent Sopel's.  51 Phantom was having a great game in Game 3 in the first two, and then had to watch Sopes stumble and crawl around the ice, which is bringing down Hammer as GMH mentioned.  If Campbell gets past the first forechecker, he will exploit the oodles of space behind it.

I know some of you are jittery.  Don't be.  We'd have taken 2-1 in the Cup Final in October.  We have the better team.  We haven't played our best in this series yet, and the Flyers have.  They still needed at OT to scratch out a win.  It's coming tonight.  Tonight we see that effort and determination that no team has ever been able to live with.

Cheesesteaks approaching...

Oh, and you know where we'll be tonight, so come join us.  Bottom Lounge, 1375 W. Lake.  Do it.

Bliss In Concrete: Flyers at Hawks Game 2 Preview/Pregame Thread/Rained Out BBQ

Radio-flyer-classic-red-wagon-lg_medium vs. Images_medium
GAMETIME: 7pm Central
TV/RADIO: NBC (Red, White, and Blue), CBC (Maple Leaf), WGN 720am
Philly Focal Point: Broad Street Hockey

Let's make it a little easier on the soul than the last one, eh?  Although, I guess we'll take a win however it comes, but we're all trading years off our life if they're going to be like that.  Anyway, the Hawks are 1/4th of the way home, but they'll need to change a lot of things to get a second win tonight.

First off, passing in their own zone and the neutral zone.  The Flyers scored four of their five goals of bad turnovers, and that can't happen again.  The first two periods saw far too many occasions when Hawk forwards were getting beat to the puck by pinching defensemen, something we saw against Nashville.  Two solid passes and the Hawks should be out and in space behind the aggressive Flyer forecheck.

Second, wait all of three to five minutes before receiving your first power play of the Finals.  You won't have to do much, it's coming regardless.

Third, do the same effective job of clearing rebounds and your zone that you did in the 3rd period of Game 1.  The Flyers barely had a sniff until the last few minutes when the Hawks went into full protect mode.  A lot has been made of how Michael Leighton bounced back from a rough Game 3 against the Habs to post a shutout in Game 4.  Hate to break it to you, but we're not the Habs.  Additionally, Niemi has been just as good at bouncing back.  After the shaky Games 1 and 3 against the Preds, he posted shutouts in the following games then.  After the Game 1 disaster against Vancouver, he held the Hawks in Game 2 when they needed it most this season.  There's no reason not to expect a more solid effort from the Antti-dote tonight, but let's hope the puck sticks to him a little more anyway.

One thing to watch for is how Pronger reacts when his ice time gets over 25.  It's one thing to skate 30 against the toothpick swords the Bruins and Habs wield.  It's quite another to do it against the Excalibur the Hawks are carrying.  He'd better be good, there's nothing to suggest Hossa won't be ragdolling the bottom pairs again.

Cheesesteaks approaching....

Update: Carcillo is in for the Flyers, and apparently signaling a line shakeup.  Here's what they have on Puck Daddy:

Carcillo-Richards-Gagne
Leino-Briere-Hartnell
Gagne-Giroux-Asham
Laperrier-Betts-Powe

Also Bartulis is in for Parent.  What this means for Q I don't know, but he may consider having Marlboro 72 out against Briere's line, or not matching lines at all.  Who the fuck knows.

For the Hawks, Ladd's out again, but you knew that.

Wow, actually writing a preview for a Stanley Cup Final game.  Exciting, no?  You ready?  No?  Well, too bad.  It's here, and we'll get through it together.

Look, we've broken this down for the past week, so there's not much left to say here.  The particulars; Andrew Ladd is out for tonight, Tomo Kop is in, and it looks like Sharp and The Slovaks will be playing tonight, with Brouwer sliding down to Ladd's spot.  That's fine, Brouwer can perform in that role, and might even benefit from playing with a playmaker like Versteeg.  Philly has no new injury concerns.

We don't know who Q will match up who with, so we'll find out together.  Both of these teams have had a little trouble with starting games.  With the absolute bonkers atmosphere that the UC should be tonight, I can't see how the Hawks don't come out firing, but I've said that before.  Watch out for the 2nd, the Flyers have been absolute nails in that period, where their speed wreaks havoc on teams caught in long changes.  But they haven't dealt with speed like the Hawks.

You know what?  Enough talk.  Let's just do this...

Another apology: I echo McClure in being extremely sorry we didn't get anything up yesterday.  Head of Cyber Division was working a double, and both McClure and I were helping The Professor move (a lot of you know who that is) before I was on Indian duty. I assume GMH was at her monthly Skulls meeting.  Won't happen again, at least for a week.

Anyway, we're hoping today is the day we've waited for for 18 years.  That ended in Edmonton in four games, with Dirk Graham declining the opportunity to touch the Clarence Campbell Trophy.  Johnny, take your cue.  We stand at the precipice once again.  I'd love to sit here and tell you the Sharks will just roll over and let the Reaper embrace them, but this Sharks team almost certainly won't.  Though they threw their best punch on Friday and still came up empty, I doubt they're going to chuck it.  So the Hawks will have to be on their game.  And there's no reason not to be.  Leave it all out there, and you'll have at least 6 days off before you get an opportunity of a lifetime.

It's not that the Hawks were bad on Friday, either.  They just faced a team that was playing for its lives that is also extremely skilled, and there were a couple calls that certainly didn't help (hey look, I'm a Scum fan!).  I can't recall the Hawks being jittery in their zone or not getting bodies in front or turning the puck over, the Sharks just played very well.  Niemi once again declined them, and the Hawks eventually found their way.  It was back and forth for a lot of it, except for the 3rd, which was torture.  Quite simply the Hawks cashed in on the mistakes the Sharks made.  Boyle firing off-balance with Toews in handshake distance, leading to Weapon's breakaway.  Nabokov, Boyle, and Heatley turning into the Nairobi Trio (much dap to whoever gets that reference) while Buff waltzed into the slot for Bolland to find.  So keep doing that, and it's all over.

But the Hawks shouldn't have to depend on Niemi today.  They should come out breathing fire and crapping lightning, or however that's supposed to go.  The Sharks "d" has struggled when attacked, and Thornton has been pinned in his own zone at times with whoever he's playing with.  The Hawks don't have to change much.  But get a lead early, and more than one goal.  Let's see how much fight they have then with the building rocking and the Abyss quickly approaching.  The Canucks sure didn't.  Niemi had a tendency to let softies in early in the first couple rounds, let's not even give him the chance to do so.

Oh, and McClure wanted me to mention the ice will be shit.  But that's part and parcel of playing deep into the spring.  I don't know what you can do about it.

What We All Come To Need: Hawks at Canucks Game 6 Preview/Pregame Thread/Pants Party

Images_medium  vs. Lumberjack_song_medium

GAMETIME: 8:30pm
TV/RADIO: CSN (for the locals), VS. (For the American Transplants), CBC (For Hawks61 and Chico), WIND- 560am

And what we need is 60 minutes.  60 minutes of simple, playoff hockey.  60 minutes without the cutesy passing when a shot is required, 60 minutes of getting the puck out of the zone and no silly home run passes.  60 minutes bereft of aiming for the top corners and simply getting the puck on net.  60 minutes of crashing the crease and picking up the rebounds that will likely be there.  60 minutes of knocking off the bullshit and playing the game, and winning the battles that define the playoffs.  Do that, and we'll move on down the West Coast.

Score first.  Take a lead into the 1st intermission (which the Hawks have failed to do this series).  Let the Canucks spend the break getting a look at the abyss that is quickly approaching.  See if they can maintain their structure and discipline under those circumstances.  We know they can't maintain the latter if they have to chase the game.  The Hawks breathed life far too early into the Canucks in Game 5, in a game where they really didn't have much to lose (who expected them to win?  Canucks fans were writing their obits for the most part).  Niemi needs to make some saves early, prove he won't be rattled by the early goal he gave up Sunday.  Punish what was already a suspect defensive corps that is now getting more and more beat up.

I said it yesterday, this feels like the game where Sharp and Hossa really come to the fore.  Stay out of the box, Marian.  Continue to harass defenders and make their life hell.  Keep getting the chances you have been, you'll bury them tonight.  Oh, and keep Jordan Hendry off the ice as much as possible.  Sharpen up your game, Bolland-Ladd-Versteeg.  Remember you had the Sedins off their game by simply being everywhere they were.  Do that again.

There are no secrets any more.  We know what they're going to do, they know what we're going to do.  But they knew what we were going to do in Games 3 and 4, and were powerless to stop it.  Even if the Canucks play their game, we beat them in Game 2 doing that, we can do it again.  They still want to be where we are, remember that, and use it.

They caught us with a lack of urgency in Game 5, i can't imagine the Hawks will make that mistake again.  They got a wonderful performance from Luongo.  Get in his face, make some saves impossible to make, and there's nothing he can do.  Be Rex Ryan, be a fucking killer!  Fucking kill!.

Let me try this one more time: TO THE CLIFFS!

SONG FOR THE DEAD: Nucks Misconduct

For the five minutes after Game 4, I thought I would be relaxed when today rolled around.  Yeah, so much for that.  I know the Canucks look a broken team.  I know they haven't proven they can behave and just play the game for a long enough stretch.  I know that the Hawks are oozing confidence and swagger right now.  I know.  But I wonder if the Hawks don't think this series is over.  It would be very unlike them, but they have thrown in clunkers due to complacency before.  I know they're 3-0 when they have a chance to put a team to the sword.  But still the nerves are jangling.

That said, I think we can all agree that if the Hawks can jump out to an early lead, and really be all over the Canucks in the 1st (which they haven't quite done yet this series), there's every chance the mental midgets that comprise the that blue and green squad over there will fold up the tent and wait for the ride home.  But I've said all series that I think this Canucks team is made of sterner stuff than past versions, which means at the very least they're going to come out firing to start.  McClure thinks that if they go down they'll concentrate on exacting their pound of flesh, but I don't see it.  If they're beaten, they'll be beaten and move on with it, and I don't think the Hawks would engage them anyway.  I see the Canucks really trying to stick to terms here, they know what's beaten them the past two and acting like galactic morons for a third straight game won't change that.

All eyes will be on Sideshow Bob tonight.  For the first time his coach has called him out.  He knows what he's going to see, and perhaps tonight is the night he stops bitching about it, takes a page from his counterpart across the ice and just goes about stopping the puck.  But when has that ever happened.

The Hawks need this one tonight.  End it now, don't give them a sniff of oxygen.  A loss here  would make this series itchy indeed, and there's no need for it.  The Hawks could have this over in the first 20 minutes.  Don't wait for the Canucks to give it to you.  Go out and take it, it's yours.

To the cliffs!

Vancouver Vamp: Nucks Misconduct

Wow, we're making some friends in Vancouver...

Hey, I called Shane O'Brien "Drinky" McGoo, not "Dinky".  If you're going to completely miss the point of what we do, the least you could do is quote me right.  Ok, Mr. Mcintyre?  Thanks much.  And judging by your comments, I'm sorry our blog gets more readers than all your journalism degrees can manage.  I'd say more, but my mommy just finished making brownies and I have to go upstairs now!!!!

Anyway, tonight is all about what kind of killer instinct the Hawks have.  I can't escape the feeling that Scum of Yore (I think they're opening for Sharp and the Slovaks at Empty Bottle in July) would win this type of game 5-1 and the series would be over.  If the Hawks think that's what they are now, and they and we do, then you go out and put a boot firmly on jugular of your opponent tonight.  Score three unanswered in the first and give the Canucks ample reason to unravel.  Take the crowd out of it as soon as you can, making them throw garbage on the ice in the 1st (yeah, we're childish.  Whatever dude), so that they are out of ammo by the 3rd.  That's what I'd like to see.

But I don't know how likely that is.  This series is still very much up in the air, and if not for some heroic saves by Antti Niemi in Games 2 and 3, the Canucks could be going for a sweep tonight.  That said, if Luongo wasn't standing on his head in the 1st of Game 1, the Hawks could be doing the same.  What that adds up to is that this series is pretty nip and tuck (hey, look Mr. McIntyre, I just used a total cliche!  I'm ready to write for a big boy paper now!).

We'll learn a lot about the Canucks tonight, too.  One, do they have something contained in their scrotum?  Vancouver teams in past years most certainly did not, but I think this one might.  Second, even though they have to ratchet up the intensity, can they do it in the right ways?  Or will there be more punching Dave Bolland in the back of the head?  Will their zealous-ness in crashing Antti Niemi's crease lead to them getting called for all the interference calls they've been bleeding out of their vaginas  for the Hawks to receive (quick side note: the spellcheck on our site here does not recognize "vaginas".  Is it possible it can't conceive of more than one at a time?  We need to work on this thing's imagination and fantasies, SB Nation!)?  Or will they direct their anger and desperation in all the right ways -- a forecheck that makes Hawks d-men turnover the puck, which we've seen plenty of?  Getting in Niemi's face and screening him?  Winning the battles along the boards that the Hawks simply dominated in periods 2 and 3 last time and won the game?  Honestly, I don't know.  I'll find out with all of you.

There are some lineup changes for the Nucks.  Burrows is going to skate with Thing 1 and Thing 2, either to get him going or to get the twins going.  Not sure which.  You decide.  Michael Grabner is going to be on the 2nd line with Kesler and Raymond, two Canucks who have nothing to apologize for so far this series, either to us or their fans.  Mikael Samuelsson has been dropped to the 3rd line, where he can have a front row seat in watching Sharp and the Slovaks cockslap Kyle Wellwood and Jannik Hanssen.  Rypien and Pavol Demitra, who apparently is still alive, have been scratched.

Come on down to the Bottom Lounge and join us for all the fun (1375. W. Lake).  There'll be drink specials, giveaways, tunes, swearing, and more!  Be there or be stupid, and as usual, McClure will be both.

Before we get started, let us all take a moment to soak in Scum being down 3-0 to the Sharks, including blowing a two-goal lead at home and allowing Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau to become playoff heroes.  Canucks fans, you should join in this too...

...

...(man, this feels good)

.....

...(just a little longer)

....

...ah, there we go.  Anyway, back to the matter at hand (and yes, we're gonna ride the Alice In Chains train until it stops).  The Hawks are going to face a fury greater than what they saw from Nashville in Game 3 of that series, and we know how well they handled that.  Perhaps the lack of surprise will help, I don't know.  What we do know is Canucks fans have been waiting for this game since Dave Bolland potted that power play goal (back when that used to happen) with five to go in Game 5 (it was after that game that GMH labeled Patrick Kane as having the devil in him and possessing black magic, and she's been the best writer on this site ever since).  The Nucks are going to come out hitting, skating, and will have some prime chances whether we like it or not.  Antti Niemi, welcome to Thunderdome.  If the Hawks can get out of that initial rush unscathed or at least not buried, things will look up.

As far as lineup changes, Brouwer is out and Hendry is in, but I doubt Hendry sees any more ice time than is necessary to give the other five the occasional breather.  While we like Hendry around these parts, he has been out of his depth in the playoffs, and either a rapid improvement is needed or he needs to be sheltered.  I think we all feel for Brouwer, it's not lack of effort but clearly his head isn't there and he's not helping the team.  Buff gets his chance with Daydream Nation, and hopefully he can make it count.  Though in Game 2 that line wasn't really all that good.

More importantly, the Hawks 3rd line needs to be just as good as they were, if not better.  Even though they got the better of the Sedins' on Monday, I don't know that Alain Vigneault is going to go out of his way to avoid it this time.  Also, the Hawks power play tends to be better on the road -- perhaps due to dumbing it down -- and with the added rabid-ness of the Canucks tonight I fully expect to see the Hawks get a few chances on it.  Bury some of them, please.

For the Canucks, it appears Ryan Johnson is back from injury, which will move dipshit-athon Rick Rypien to wing, a vast improvement.  However, word has it that even bigger dumbass Darcy Hordichuk will be in the lineup, probably to counteract Burish and Eager.  It'll be a race to see who can act like the biggest moron first, I hope Hordichuk wins.

You will not enjoy this.  It will not be over quickly.  Feel free to suffer here together.
