Downtown in Dogtown - Hawks @ Coyotes Preview, Game Thread, Bay City Rollers Concert

Game Time: 8:00PM CST
TV: Comcast Sportsnet, NHL Network

A Bunch of Jackals: Five For Howling

How quickly things change. First I'm strictly verboten from writing the previews because the Hawks weren't winning when I did, and then I write one that breaks a slump, and now I have to write tonight's preview. So if things end up shitty, blame me.

Speaking of rapid reversals of fortune, look no further than tonight's opponent in the Phoenix Coyotes. Left for dead by their ownership and coach alike this summer, they're now crashing the party at the top of the Western Conference and Pacific Division. The Desert Dogs are now only three points behind the Hawks and Sharks with 93 points, and 7 wins in a row. And they've basically done so as the West's answer to the Buffalo Sabres.  Sam and I have talked about this, and as far as their forwards go, they're all basically the same guy, except they're a little bit more bigger and rugged in Glendale, led by the model of consistency that is Shane Doan. Their blue line is for the most part spare parts from other teams (the Hawks in particular). Keith Yandle is a blossoming dynamic presence from the back end, so keep an eye out for them. And the entire operation is held together by the solid goaltending of Ilya Bryzgalov. New addition Lee Stempniak has been playing like he's not Lee Stempniak since he got there, making Blues and Leafs fans alike rip fistfuls of hair out of their scalp. The whole operation is led by the guiding hand of coach Dave Tippett, who is as close a thing to a shoe in as there is for the Jack Adams trophy as coach of the year.

For our Men of Four Feathers, they're headed into the desert coming of a gutty win against the Kings with a depleted blue line corps that featured names of Boynton, Hendry, and Byfuglien that held LA to 17 shots. Brent Seabrook skated with the team today, but I personally would be surprised if he dressed this evening. Despite the Hawks jockeying for position at the top of the conference, I don't think the situation is as dire as it could be to rush Biscuit back. This is also the first time that we'll truly notice Brian Campbell's absence, as the Coyotes play a very disciplined defensive game, and Soupy's speed through the neutral zone will be sorely missed. Antti Niemi gets the start tonight, and Cristobal Huet will back him up after getting over his bout with the flu, as Corey Crawford has been sent back to Rockford. It appears that the forward corps will look the same, and hopefully we see something similar to what happened Thursday in LA, as Quenneville was able to roll all four lines confidently.

But now onto the REAL news.....

Logo_medium Ci_roadwatch_rev01_medium

Tonight marks our first ever road watch at the Bottom Lounge, where there will be drink specials abound from Hobgoblin beer, and Crystal Head vodka for you to get your damn drink on with. There will be a giant TV for the game and great food as well. Sam and I will be there from about 7PM on, so swing by. It's Saturday night, and I know you're not getting up early tomorrow, so from where I sit, there are very few excuses that are acceptable for not being in attendance. As we've hammered into you all week, the Bottom Lounge is located at 1375 W. Lake St. in the west loop, basically at Ogden and Lake. They do have a parking lot and the street parking is free and permit-free around the area, and for you CTA users, it's about a block and a half away from the Ashland green line stop. You know it's an EVENT when the NHL network picks up this as the Saturday night game, so it's as good an occasion as any to get out and meet your fellow pantsless internet friends.

Surf Combat - Hawks @ Kings Preview, Game Thread, Campfire Sing-Along

Images_medium @ Faith-no-more-king-for-a-day-fool-for-a-lifetime-del-1995-delantera_medium

Game Time: 9:30 PM Central
TV & Radio: CSN, WGN 720

Well, the Hawks' trip to LA has certainly been an eventful one to this point, hasn't it? Appearances on SportsCenter and the affront to comedy and good taste know as The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, and then all of last night's antics which left the Hawks without the services of Brent Seabrook for the foreseeable future, adding to the woes of an already patchwork blue-line corps with Brian Campbell and Kim Johnsson out.  Things aren't going to get any easier tonight as the Hawks take a trip to Office Depot or where ever to skate against the Kings.

The Kings come into tonight's tilt in 6th place in the West, and third in the Pacific with 85 points. Not a lot has changed for L.A. since their visit to the United Center last week. Anze Kopitar is still a machine even though he's fallen off the league's scoring leaderboard, Dustin Brown is going to hit everything in sight, Drew Doughty is making a legitimate run at being a Norris Trophy finalist, and Jonathan Quick will almost assuredly get the start in net. Terry Murray's crew has been touch-and-go since the Olympic break, going 3-3-1 since the real games resumed. We know this team can play both up-tempo or gritty and has the depth of personnel for both styles. And oh yeah, they have arguably the worst fucking goal song in the league, right up there with Nashville.

And then there's our battered, bruised, and depleted Men of Four Feathers. In talking with Sam today, both he and I expect them to come out with a snarl akin to that of a wolverine who has been fed a kilo of angel dust (better Faith No More album, by the way). All of the talk to the media after the game seemed to indicate that the Hawks are mad as hell and not going to take this anymore, and Duncan Keith had some particularly choice words on the subject, suggesting that the Hawks may have to start getting dirty themselves. We'll see how that works out for them, but fully expect that the Hawk forwards are going to try to get close enough to Jon Quick to find out what scent of Febreeze the equipment managers use on his gear. And though recently the results haven't gone their way, the Hawks have been putting up 40 shots a game pretty consistently, so it's not all gloom and doom. What the lineup will consist of is really anyone's guess at this point, so I'm not even going to speculate, but Antti Niemi will be getting the start in net. Three points out of the next four and no further injuries would keep this brief road trip from being an unmitigated disaster. With any damn luck that begins tonight. Let's Go Hawks.

I Am The Terror That Flaps In The Night: Blackhawks At Ducks: Preview, Game Thread, Members Only Night

Images_medium   @  Duck_hunt_dog_by_8_bit_painter_medium

Game Time: 9:00 Central
TV on the Radio:  WGN on WGN
QUACK! QUACK! QUACK!:  Anaheim Calling, Battle of California

So I've recovered from my Flamingo injury (or whatever else you come up with) in time to get back here and get the preview today.  Sorry about that everyone...

Tonight will open a nice short jaunt out west to play the usual California suspects only with the Coyotes thrown in to replace the Sharks just for good measure.  First up for the Hawks are the Pacific cellar dwelling Anaheim Ducks.  Although the Ducks are having a fairly miserable season this year, they've got the edge in the season series with the Hawks so far winning two of three times they've met.

Backstopping the Ducks tonight is likely to be an emerging Hawks killer - Jonas Hiller.  Hiller is a wall when he plays against the Hawks, posting an unreal .942 SV% and a 1.42 GAA.  The only team he's proven to be better against in multiple match ups is Nashville.  However, Hiller seems to have left it all in Vancouver during the Olympics.  Since returning from the break he's posted a record of 1-4-1.  He did pick up his first win against San Jose on Sunday and a solid reason for his poor record is the overall crappiness of the Ducks.  In two of his losses, the Ducks failed to light the lamp a single time.

As we've seen for the past two years now, the Ducks will be bringing the one line they do possess and hoping it's enough to win.  The bad news, their scoring line is a more than a little banged up.  Teemu Selanne injured his shoulder on Sunday and Ryan Getzlaf aggravated an injury he first hurt before the Olympics.  They're both listing themselves as "likely" for tonight but they're likely not to be at 100%.  Selanne does need only one more goal to reach 600 lifetime goals... however only about 104 have come from him actually doing any work, the rest have all just been annoying as fuck for opposing fans.

We'll of course be seeing how the Hawks look without Brian Campbell for the first time since he signed his monster contract and no one actually feels good about it.  Kim Johnsson didn't skate yesterday and as of this writing I haven't seen anything about the likeilhood of him playing tonight.  Panda did skate with the team yesterday so lets hope he re-joins the team.  It'll be Antti Niemi in net tonight as Cristobal Huet has gone down with the flu.. so lets hope he gets some quality baguettes or whatever it is that the French do to combat illness.  The Blackhawks are downright awful playing the Honda Center as well - I believe their record is something around 3-323-4.. but don't quote me on that.

And finally - Happy St. Patrick's Day.  Remember that green beer is for amateurs.

UPDATE: Corey Crawford will be starting in net tonight. Lordy. Good thing everyone's going to be drinking anyway.

I Know It Sounds Funny But I Just Can't Stand The Pain - Caps @ Hawks Preview, Thread, Catholic Mass

Independence_20day_medium@ Images_medium
Game Time: 11:30 in the goddamn morning

Those Clowns In Washington Did It Again. What A Bunch Of Clowns: Japer's Rink

Mark this day in history, Juggalos. We've had many a game recap written while actively intoxicated. This morning marks the first ever preview written while one of the authors of this "site" is completely gassed up. And because of that, I'm willing to throw caution to the wind at this point, because I've been banned from writing previews due to my recent losing streak when doing so.

So yesterday afternoon's tilt was a cock punch, make no mistake about it. The Hawks played well enough to win for the vast majority of the game, and still came away with jack and shit. Personally, I liked a lot of what I saw, but there was some ugliness peppered in. And none of said ugliness is going to fly against the visiting Capitals. They're the league front-runners for the President's Trophy as basically the early 90's Buffalo Bills On Ice. Part of that has to do with the fact that they play in the Popsicle Division in the Cupcake Conference, but all that aside, this team is the balls offensively. Alexanders Semin and Ovechkin lead the charge, centered by the Swedish Niklas Backstrom. Mike Green and his faux-hawk are the catalyst for it all from the blue line. There are questions about the rest of the defensive corps, as well as the tandem of Jose Theodore and Semyon Varlamov in net, but what's up front hides a multitude of sins elsewhere. Make no mistake, the big Red, White, and Blue machine is steamrolling into the Madhouse this morning.

As for our beloved Men of Four Feathers, if the defense plays anything like they have since mid-January, the Caps are going to drop a 9-burger on them. Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook (Biscuit in particular) had better snap to it if they'd prefer to not be embarassed on national american television, even though the numbers at that time in the morning for "our" demographic are going to be negligible. Jordan Hendry has to dress in favor of Brent Sopel if the Hawks don't want to have to put Sopel on IR because of windburn and/or whiplash, considering Scott Hartnell absolutely blew by him yesterday. Up front, Patrick Kane, who appears to be fighting it, needs to fire the puck when he gets a chance since he's been reluctant to do so over the past few games, and any time Dave Bolland wants to make himself noticable as an actual NHL second line center is alright by me. Fortunately, the Ladd/Madden/VERSTEEG! combination has come to life and is picking up a modicum of the slack. Antti Niemi gets the start, and if this isn't a litmus test for all who think he can be THE GUY come the middle of next month, then I don't know what is.

The NBC broadcast crew last week was probably not too far off in setting the over/under for the game at 15 goals, and it will likely prove to be an end-to-end, surprisingly nasty affair (recall the last time Dat Ovechkin Guy was in town two years ago and he and Toews were prepared to skull fuck one another for the entire 60 minutes). You know it's an important game when Fels is bringing his father who is for the most part indifferent to hockey to it. Just for fun, take a sip every time the phrase "Stanley Cup Preview" is uttered during the broadcast. You're guaranteed to be shit-wasted on screwdrivers before the end of brunch. Let's Go Hawks.

King Ain't Satisfied Til He Rules Everything: Kings @ Blackhawks - Preview, Game Thread, Murder Mystery

Still Missing the Purple and Gold: Jewels From The Crown, Battle of California

In our first podcast, for some reason (read: alcohol) I mentioned that no one on the Kings roster really scared me.  Look no further than that for proof that I'm an idiot.  Anze Kopitar might not be in the race for the scoring title like he was at the start of the year but he's still a monster.  If you weren't in love with Drew Doughty before the Olympics, chances you are now.  The Kings are a sneaky good team that will certainly be a candidate for an upset in the first round of the playoffs - unless of course they end up catching the Coyotes and grabbing the 4th spot.

This isn't really a team you want to see when you have the question mark that currently is the Blackhawks goalie.  Antti Niemi will get the start and he did have some success against the Kings the only time he faced them.. of course that was last year when the Kings were a pretty different team.  The Kings are coming off a dismantling of the Blue Jackets on Monday where their power play scored on half the opportunities they were given and their defense held the BJs to just 11 shots, not even the Hawks at their best came close to that so far this season.

If we see the sloppy Hawks defensive play continue into this game, the Kings aren't a team that will miss many of their chances.  While only a few of their players will really stand out, none are really a glaring weakness.  Jonathan Quick may only be 2-4-0 against the Hawks in his career so far but he's posting an impressive .916 SV% against the boys in red.

Not exactly what you want to see for a team that's facing some adversity lately, is it?  As I mentioned in the post below though, the Hawks will be getting some very welcomed energy from the return of Adam Burish tonight.  It's no surprise that he's already running his mouth about getting out there and hitting people - and it's of less surprise that we're glad to hear it.  The Kings do have a goon in Raitis Ivanans who could likely send Burish back on the IR if they chose to drop the gloves so Burish should keep his head up if the Kings choose to dress this neanderthal... but he hasn't played since the second of this month so who knows if he'll skate today.  Wayne Simmonds is the Kings next leading player and while he probably could still mop the floor with Burish, they're at least in the same weight class.

As usual, Sam and his cronies will be outside the UC selling the Committed Indian before the game and you have no excuses not to buy one.  If you're not going to the game - check out the links on the left where you can buy an electronic copy for today's issues.

Because School Starts Much Too Early, And This Hotel Wasn't Free: Scum at Hawks Preview/Thread/Sunday Brunch

Devilsnightdetroit_medium  vs. Images_medium
GAMETIME:  11:30am.  Christ.
TV/RADIO: NBC, WGN 720
VOICE OF EVIL: WInging It In Motown

Because Killion can't be trusted to wake up early enough to get this done, because McClure is on a serious losing streak whenever he does the preview, and because I'll be spending all morning on Indian duty, I'll get this up now.  I can't believe the NHL would bend over so far backwards to have a game start before noon.  But then again, I have a problem of overdosing on logic.  11:30!!!  I can't stand it.  It'll be intriguing to see how the early start affects the atmosphere and the play on the ice.  Will it all be sluggish?  Or will it still have a Wings-Hawks feel?  Will Kane be too hungover?

The 1st period against the Canucks was the most gratifying period of hockey at the UC this year.  Watching Luongo throw two separate tantrums in 20 minutes makes me giggle in places I didn't know could giggle.  Sadly, the Hawks didn't have the same desire to put up 10 as we did to see them do it, and turned it off for the next forty.  This time of year though, it never hurts to take your breathers where you can.  Huet will start this game, and Adam Burish's return will wait at least one more.  So expect a fourth line of Tomas Kopecky, Ben Eager, and Dustin Byfuglien again.  Which is fine with me, as the demotion seems to have finally lit a fire under Buff.  We'll set the over/under at 3 minutes gone in the 2nd when Kopecky loses his helmet.

Detroit fans are finally facing the fact that maybe, just maybe, they might miss the playoffs.  They currently hold the 8th seed, with Calgary one back and St. Louis three back at the time of writing.  They're finally all healthy again, and in outclassing the Preds on Friday showed some of the form that keeps us up at night.  But it's also the same bunch that got donkey-punched on Wednesday by the same Canucks team that the Hawks just undressed.  Jimmy Howard is officially the #1 for the run to the postseason, because Chris Osgood has redefined the term "awful" this year.  He'll have plenty of time to memorize his stats these days on the bench.

The injuries have cost Scum a lot, but it doesn't tell the whole story.  It may be illegal to mention this, heaven forbid anyone actually criticize a Wings player, but Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg are headed for their lowest point-totals since the lockout.  When the Wings needed these two to carry them through injury-ravaged waters, they only sort of did.  That's why they're 22nd in the league in scoring.  Yell about their supporting cast all you want.  If they're so dependent on that supporting cast, then are they not as good as we first thought?

We all still expect the Wings to wake up at some point and charge up the standings.  But we've been saying that since January.  It hasn't happened.  Yet.  Still, I don't want to see the Machine get all the parts working tomorrow.

Have at it through the night.

If You Want Blood, You Got It: Canucks at Hawks Preview/Thread/Wine Tasting

Kesler_medium  vs. Andrew_ladd_medium

GAMETIME: 7:30pm
TV/RADIO: CSN, WGN RADIO 720
CANADIAN COUNTERPART: Nucks Misconduct

Well, won't this be quite the tasty affair, hmmm?  Is this the Hawks biggest rival at the moment?  Surely the team that hates them the most, and probably the one they have the most distaste for.  However they feel, the Hawks must turn up their game if they want to avoid getting horsed tonight, as the Canucks have found their "A" game pretty quickly after the break.  They rolled Scum in Detroit on Wednesday, 6-3, with even blimp Kyle Wellwood looking useful.  Kesler had a big game too, so the crap we've seen against the Isle and Oil is just not going to fly tonight.

With Iron Madden coming off injury (but playing tonight), look for Toews to draw the Sedins on every even-strength shift.  There are no doubt that Captain Marvel can handle it, but I worry about Kane being asked to cancel out what is currently the best line in hockey right now.  Then again, offense is the best defense, and the way this line controlled Thornton-Marleau-Heatley in the last game against San Jose leads one to believe they can do it again.  Coach Q could also give Bolland and Hossa that assignment.  Should make for interesting watching.

However, these Canucks are more than one line, for once.  Mason Raymond and Ryan Kesler prowl on the second line, and both are headed for 30 goals seasons.  Below that is Mikael Samuelsson, who's been a pain in the ass for years, and he's got 22 goals.  Needless to say, it's a stern test.  The Nucks are a little beat up on the blue line, as Willie Mitchell and Kevin Bieksa miss out to have a talking contest in the pressbox.  They missed the last game between these two as well, and that didn't go so well.

I'll be interested to see how Alain Vigneault plays this one.  Do the Canucks trap and try and swallow the Hawks in the neutral zone as they have in previous visits?  Or with their new-found scoring depth, and recent Hawks struggles against an aggressive forecheck, do they go toe-to-toe?  I can't tell you who to sock it to.  Can't wait for faceoff.

If you're headed to the game, remember to pick up an Indian so I can afford beer, and if you're not going, remember that you can now sign up for that night's issue right up until faceoff.  God bless these fancy new phones!

It Still Moves: The Cannon

And so we've come to yet another milepost on the season, the last game prior to the two-week long Olympic break. There are obviously a lot of Hawks that need the break, and unfortunately not all of those players are going to get it (cough Keith, Seabrook cough), as they will be in Vancouver representing their countries. But first and foremost, today's game has to be played, after which everyone can hop in their limos, drink their Kokanee, and take their shirts off, and do so to their heart's content until March 2nd.

The Hawks visit the Columbus Blue Jackets for today's matinee, and since the two last did battle on January 16th, the Jackets have fired coach/barge Ken Hitchcock, and in doing so jettisoned his torturous brand of hockey.  Since Claude Noel has taken over, the Jackets won three straight before being downed most recently by the Canucks. The latter two wins were Steve Mason shutouts, and the first, Mason only allowed one goal. It stands to reason that Hitch's departure has given the sophomore netminder a bit of a spark. This could just be a blip on the radar, as most times a coaching change leads to a bit of a surge,  but should the Jackets claw their way back to respectability in the Western Conference, it could lead to a permanent gig for Noel. Leading the way offensively is still captain Rick Nash with 27G-29A-56P, giving him one of his most balanced outputs ever. Antoine Vermette and Kristian Huselius are also having respectable years, but their abhorrent +/-'s (-5 and -12 respectively) exhibit just how difficult things have been in Columbus. While this team has been bad basically from top to bottom of the roster, they still gave the Hawks a game in the last tilt, and cannot be taken lightly.

As for the Men of Four Feathers, they come into this afternoon's game after a shoot out win over Atlanta at the UC last night. Marian Hossa took a hard check from Colby Armstrong, and will not play, Jake Dowell has been recalled from Rockford to take his roster spot. Cristobal Huet should start this afternoon as well, after three straight starts and three straight wins from Antti Niemi, who was only impressive in the first of the three (in spite of his shoot out performances in the latter two). Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith continue to be an adventure the caliber of King's Quest V in their own zone, and it seems unlikely that they'll have rectified that in the last 18 hours. Here's hoping they get their collective shit together over the Olympics, but again, the likelihood of that is debatable.  All is not storm clouds in Blackhawk Nation, however. Since being reunitied, the top line of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, and Patrick Sharp has been absolutely sick- I think I've counted on one hand in three games where the opposition has separated them from the puck. Newly acquired defensman Kim Johnsson also seems to be a good fit with the Hawks style, already getting some power play time last night. One last 60 minute effort before SPRING BREAK is all we're looking for here boys. Send it off on a good note. Let's Go Hawks.

What Do You Need That For, Dude?: Thrashers at Hawks Preview/GDT/Lebowski Fest

Tk-thrasher-cover_medium  vs. Images_medium
GAMETIME: 7:30 pm on the WEST SIIIIIIDDE!

Where the South Rises Again: Bird Watchers Anonymous

And now, the final curtain.  Well, for two weeks that is.  The Hawks head into the Olympic break with a back-to-back against two opponents they should beat.  But that doesn't mean it'll be easy, as the Thrash are a tougher out then they look and then the Hawks will have to fight Bus-Is-Running-Itis tomorrow afternoon in Ohio.  Still, anything short of four points from these games would be a disappointment.  Get that, and the Hawks will have gathered 9 of the 12 points on offer this month, and we really wouldn't argue with that.

Atlanta comes in off a victory in Minnesota last night, and they're 2-1-1 since sending Kovalchuk to New Jersey.  The two main acquisitions from that, Oduya and Bergfors, are playing quite well.  Especially Bergfors, who has three goals in the four games he's been in blue (I think it's blue, you tell me what color that is if it's not).  The aged-Moose Johan Hedberg got the win last night, so expect youngster Ondrej Pavelec to be in between the pipes tonight.  The Thrashers are a more interesting team than you think.   Think of them as a Southern, less talented version of the Sabres.  They have a raft of undersized, quick forwards who buzz all around the rink.  They have four defensemen who could be considered puck-movers in Oduya, Tobais Enstrom, Pavel Kubina, and even Ron Hainsey, and they love to push the pace of the game.

Keep a special eye on Evander Kane.  He's the youngest player in the league, but he seems to be finding his feet now.  He terrorized the Wild last night, including scoring a beauty of a goal, beating Niklas Backstrom top shelf from the circles.

That said, this team isn't going to be confused with a stud defensive squad.  They give up 33 shots a game, and Pavelec's GAA is over 3.  John Anderson is not going to show up here and have his team trap, so we could get a real track meet tonight.  The Hawks have struggled with aggressive forechecks recently, but if our d-men return to anything resembling top form in transition, there will be opportunities galore.  In addition, with the Thrashers having played last night and this being their last game before the break, you wonder if the Hawks get an early lead if the Thrash won't suffer from the same affliction the Hawks will have to watch out for tomorrow.

Tonight will also mark the debut of Kim Johnsson (Driver #8 for those keeping score)  McClure pretty much summed up my feelings on the deal yesterday.  I'm still a fan of Cam Barker, and dread the day when he finally blossoms and we have to deal with all the "How could we get rid of this guy?" debates.  Won't that be fun?  But I like Johnsson, especially on a 3rd pairing.  Anttii Niemi gets his third start in a row, and the Hawks have just called up Bryan Bickell for tonight as Eager and Madden are out.  And we like Bickell around these parts.

For those heading down, remember to pick up an Indian so I can pay for all the beer I plan on drinking on my first night of vacation, and for those who aren't remember you can pick one up here through that link on the left.

Let's Go Hawks

Update: According to Sassone, Jordan Hendry will be suiting up in place of Brent Sopel, who is resting an injured foot. This could very well be your post-deadline third pairing, ladies and germs, so keep an eye on it.
