Look, I'm in a fine mood after spending six hours at O'hare to not get to Nashville tonight. So you're not going to get a full preview. You know the drill here. A lot of ex Hawks. Campbell will get wrongly booed, and probably an unfair joke or two from Foley and Edzo. Panthers started hot, but haven't been very good last 10. They give up a lot of shots and a lot of goals recently. Kris Versteeg hasn't scored in a while.

The Hawks? Emery starts. Lineup stays the same. Keep playing well.

Have at it.

Can I Hit It In The Morning? - Hawks at Scum Preview, Pregame Thread, Wake-Up Call

Leaders Of The Free World: Winging It In Motown, Abel To Yzerman

Even though this is now the third tilt between Scum and the Hawks in just over the last two weeks, it still feels odd that it's taken this long in the season for the first visit to the detestable sore known as Detroit. Scum enters this morning's brunch affair 2 points behind the Hawks with a game in hand, and having split their last two games since crosschecking their way to a victory over the Hawks on Sunday. A 5-1 pants-shitting on the Isle was without Pavel Datsyuk, who returned just in time to assist on the late tying goal and convert in the shootout in Phoenix. We're now saying for the third time in 15 days- as Dats goes, so go Scum, as he still leads them with 44 points.

Not much else has changed in during the work week with this lot. Henrik Zetterberg is still having a slightly off year, but cannot be taken lightly. Johan Franzen is still a power play force and totally willing to take out his frustrations with being so heinously ugly on anyone under 6' tall. Career peckers Valtteri Filppula and Jiri Hudler will undoubtedly score at least one frustrating goal at an inopportune time. And the for defensive corps, including heretofore infallible Nicklas Lidstrom will still be vulnerable with speed to the outside and hope that Jimmy Howard can clean up the mess, where he's dipped a little in his ability to do of late. The biggest change from the other two games will be that it will take place in the Joe, a place that Scum loyalists describe as being "intimate", "vintage", or "having character" in the same way a shady Craigslist ad will try to convince an out-of-towner that some shithole studio in Uptown is actually inhabitable. But Scum have been using that piss smell and those live boards to their advantage, going 17-3-3 at home, and just ripping off their 13th straight W in the shootout against Phoenix. It's quite clear that Babcock is using his last change to gain favorable matchups to avoid getting his d-pairs torched for a full 60. And Babs is about the only guy in the leagueas matchy-uppy as Quenneville.

As for The Men Of Four Feathers, after having dropped their fourth straight and losing Patrick Sharp in the tilt last weekend with Scum, they've since won their last two, albeit at home against two total popsicles in Columbus and Minnesota (at least of late). However, just as important as the standings points from those two games was where the scoring came from. In those two games, Viktor Stalberg produced four goals, Dave Bolland with 3 goals and 2 assists, and goals from Andrew Shaw, Jimmy Hayes, and yes, even the now demoted Ben Smith had a goal against the Jackets. So in other words, the secondary scoring has finally picked up some of the slack from Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, and Patrick Kane. Well, at least Toews and Hossa. Kaner has been fighting it offensively for about a month now, and with Sharp shelved, snapping out of it will be particularly advantageous now that the bottom 6 has come to life. He'll need to if the Hawks are to continue to trend upward against Scum this morning and San Jose tomorrow. They'll get help from Marcus Kruger, who's returning to the lineup after missing 7 games from his impeccably handled concussion. It's anyone's guess between which wingers Kruger will start, but it'd be an upset if Hossa didn't find himself on Kruger's right before too long. Elsewhere, the lineup remains the same on the blue line and in the cage, with Crow presumably starting today, though no word has leaked yet.

Thanks to the NHL's paint huffing schedule makers, there's really not too much more to say here at this point; we all know the drill. Stay out of the box, speed to the outside, and make smart passes. Three is better than two. Let's go Hawks.

A Jumble On Both Sides: Jackets at Hawks Preview/Pregame Thread/Work Do

GAMETIME: 7:30pm Central

THE HOPELESS: Jackets Cannon

There's a fair amount of change on both sides tonight.

Let's start with our side. Due to Patrick Sharp's wrist putting him out of diaper-changing duty (and that could be a joke about Kaner. but I'll let you decide), the Hawks have a fair amount of line shuffling. Ben Smith was called up this morning, and at the morning skate was on the second line with Marian Hossa and Michael Folik. Either Fro or Optimus Grind could thrash about in the middle as Hossa bemusedly looks on. Honestly, I thought Fro had a pretty good game on Sunday even if he only managed an assist. He was backchecking like his career depended on it, which it probably does, and was everywhere in the offensive zone -- though that's not always a good thing. Getting shifts with Hossa could see Smith look somewhat...well, apparent, which he didn't in his last stint here. If he does, expect confetti to come spilling out of the pressbox.

The top line remains the Daydream Nation-Rattlehead combo, but I expect things to shuffle all night. While it can be frustrating at times, a game against Columbus is an excellent platform to try out all your toys in every formation. I think we'd all like to get a look at Jimmy Hayes with 19 and 88, but he'll start on the fourth line with Mayer and Brunette. Andrew Shaw takes Frolik's spot on the checking line. The defense should remain the same, though you know those big bad Jackets and their overbearing style might call for John Scott to police. Yeah, I wrote that with a straight face. Just to see if I could. Oh wait, there's the retching. Damn it. Thought I was really going to make it this time.

On the other side, the Jackets finally put down their lame horse of a coach in Scott Arniel yesterday, which could be filed in the "two months late" folder. I believe this is the third time this season that the Hawks will play a team in its first game under a new coach, having welcomed Ken Hitchcock back to the league in St. Louis and getting worked and beating the Ducks in their first game under Fuckin' Bruce Fuckin' Boudreau. Feel free to correct me in the comments if I'm wrong

Usually, when playing a team that has just changed coaches you worry about every opponent coming out with a wild hair on their ass to try and secure jobs under the new guy. Not convinced that will be the case tonight. The Jackets season ran aground before the pumpkins were even out on the porch. They've only promoted an assistant who was already there in Todd Richards, and he may be a boob anyway. This is also the last game of a four game trip for the Jackets, and they may just be looking forward to getting home and getting to the real work with Richards.

Oh, and they suck to high heaven, so any effort level might not make a difference.

Add to that they're beat up. The Duke Twins of Jeff Carter and James Wisniewski are both out tonight, because they're doing that thing they both do where they get hurt a lot. Mark Letestu won't be around either, and neither will Kristian Huselius. Rick Nash is also hobbling with a case of "I could give a flying about this group so I'm just going to sit here and count my money until Brian Burke calls". It's really affected his game.

No need to over-analyze this one. As long as the Hawks don't take it for granted, it'll be quite the task to not come away with two points. They've flattened this team three times this season. But who here can guarantee the Hawks will bring their full attention? After an emotional and draining cock-up against Detroit, the Hawks seemed primed for yet another letdown. But with Sharp out, some players need to come in fuck you mode. Looking at you, Mr. Humpty Hump. Though 88 hasn't been as bad as the Italian beef soaked would have you believe, the biggest way to survive the Sharp absence is to get a dominating and sneering Patrick Kane back. While Hossa has still continued to accumulate points, a couple more I'm Marian Hossa and you're not moments would be welcome.

Need a win this month. You couldn't get a more hanging curveball than this one to get it.

Such Heroic Nonsense: Winging It In Motown, Abel To Yzerman

After warring for countless centuries across various points in the galaxy, it appears that a new threat has emerged to both the Scum and Blackhawks, with the St. Louis Blues led by the Unicron-sized Ken Hitchcock now sitting atop the central division. The Blues have been devouring every planet in their path since Hitch took over, leaving the Hawks and Wings struggling of late. Scum comes into tonight's game fresh off a loss to the Leafs in Toronto last night, where they spotted the Boys of Truculence a 3-0 lead and had to fight their way back, only to be vanquished by Joffrey Lupul. Scum layed siege to the Leafs, outshooting them 40-18, only to be turned away by Jonas Gustavsson. But perhaps most importantly, is that the Leafs showed once again where the Wings can be had, and that's with speed to the outside, which the Leafs have a horde of energon's worth. It's the same blueprint the Hawks used last week when the two met, and it's one that's exposing an aging Scum squad, despite their immaculate positioning. Even Nicklas Lidstrom, for all his greatness, is on the decline, and it's beginning to show.

That's not to say that this team is to be taken lightly, particularly with all the offensive weapons they have they're still 4th overall in goals scored at 3.3 a game, and can combine to form a Devestator of a power play, operating at 19.8% good for 5th in the league. Even with Johan Franzen still sitting on the same 9 power play goals he had last Friday, he still possesses all the tools that have been giving Hawk d-men fits all season long on the kill, which is a wide ass, a nose for the net, a mean streak, and a fusion cannon of a shot. Facilitating all of this is still the emotionless efficiency of Pavel Datsyuk, who leads all Detroit scorers with 42 points, and has a seemingly bottomless arsenal of tricks and tools at his disposal to make teammates better. And since last the Hawks saw them, Jimmy Howard's play hasn't dipped much, providing a solid backstop to the whole operation, and covering much of the blue line's fuck ups.

As for the Men of Four Feathers, the once impenetrable fortress of Autobot City on west Madison has been blitzed and really had them taking a pounding of late, getting shut out at home twice in the last 4 games there. It hasn't helped things that the body count has risen even among the role players, with Steve Montador, Marcus Kruger, and Dan Carcillo all missing time lately, being replaced in some cases by guys no one had ever heard of before, such as the Blurr of Andrew Shaw. Even amidst the Hawks struggles, both offensively and in their own end, Coach Quenneville saw it fit to put Shaw, a totally unproven commodity between Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp on Friday, when the solution is clearly putting Sharp at center until Kruger comes back. That seems unlikely to happen, as it would actually make sense. At this point there's no purpose in even speculating what the lines will be, as they're likely to get jumbled up 3 shifts into the game.

More disturbing, however, are the trends on defense, particularly on the second pair. Nick Leddy looks like he's getting mauled in a pool of sharkticons under the slightest notion of a forecheck, and Nicklas Hjalmarsson seems content to just allow the opposition to stand where ever they'd like to take an infinite amount of whacks at Corey Crawford while getting himself boxed out. At least with Leddy, there is a bit of an offensive upside to mitigate if not completely balance out some of his defensive cock ups. If Hammer isn't interested in covering for Leddy in the Hawk zone, he might not be wearing an indian head much longer. With Montador out the last couple games, the third pairing has been a planet of junk, with various ill-fitting parts getting slapped together and fairing about as well as that sounds. Montador appears to be back in the lineup tonight and paired with Sean O'Donnell, who will play his 1200th career game tonight, dating all the way back to the Alpha Trion era.

The game plan for the Hawks these games is always the same, which is deny entry at the blue line, use their speed wide along the wall against Scum's blue line, and stay the hell out of the box. Correcting some of the tendencies on the second defensive pairing would also be a fine start. Time to transform and roll out. Let's go Hawks.
