Recap: NY Rangers vs. Boston

Sports Network | November 15, 2008

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Chris Drury scored the game-winning goal in the fourth round of the shootout, and the New York Rangers used a fierce third period rally to down the Boston Bruins, 3-2, at Madison Square Garden.

With the shootout scoreless after three rounds, Drury took a wrist shot in the slot. It caught goaltender Tim Thomas off guard, and the puck went right through his legs for the goal.

Patrice Bergeron had a chance to tie the shootout for the Bruins, and the referees originally claimed that he had scored. But the replay clearly showed that the puck went off Henrik Lundqvist's right skate and hit the left post, staying out of the net.

Nigel Dawes and Markus Naslund scored for the Rangers, who have won two straight. Lundqvist allowed two goals on 25 shots. New York was awful on its power-play despite the victory, failing on all six chances it had, including two 5-on-3 opportunities.

Thomas stopped 29-of-31 shots for the Bruins, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. Zdeno Chara and Dennis Wideman provided Boston's offense, while Marc Savard tallied two helpers in the loss.

The Rangers made it a one-goal game late in the third. Lauri Korpikoski took the puck from behind the net and passed it out in front to Dawes, who was able to flip the puck over Thomas' right shoulder for the score at 13:55.

New York tied the game in the waning seconds of regulation. Brandon Dubinsky found a streaking Naslund in the slot, and Naslund wristed the puck between Thomas' legs for the equalizer with just 53 seconds left.

Phil Kessel had the best chance in overtime, as he caught Lundqvist out of position. But his shot hit the crossbar, and the teams went to a shootout.

Boston finally ended the scoreless game in the middle frame. Savard took a shot that bounced right in front of the crease. Kessel attempted to slam it home, but Lundqvist made a brilliant save. The rebound, however, went to Chara, who blasted it through two defenders and past Lundqvist's stick at 8:44.

The Bruins made it 2-0 on a shorthanded tally at 12:25. Rangers defenseman Michal Rozsival lost the puck at the point, and Savard took it down the ice. He turned and passed to Wideman, who was able to beat Lundqvist stick side from the slot.

New York had a pair of two-man advantages for about two minutes total in the period, but were unable to convert. Thomas stopped all 12 of the Rangers shots in the stanza.
