New York, NY (Sports Network) - Washington Capitals forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Ovechkin, along with Nashville Predators goaltender Dan Ellis, were selected as the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending November 16.
Backstrom was picked as first star after leading all scorers with 11 points, on two goals and nine assists, in four contests.
The young Swede's finest performances of the week came in a four-point game (1G, 3A) in a 5-1 downing of Carolina on November 12 and a career-high five points on a goal and four helpers in a 6-5 shootout loss to New Jersey last Saturday.
Ovechkin picked up second star by erupting for 10 points over the last seven days, scoring at least a goal in each of the Caps' four games.
He snapped a nine-game goal drought and returned strongly from missing time to be with his grandfather in Russia by tallying in a 4-2 decision over Tampa Bay November 10, then added two goals -- one of which tied the score with one second left in regulation -- and one assist in the setback to the Devils.
Ellis notched third star honors by going 3-0-0 with a 2.28 goals-against average in three starts.
His best outing of the week came on November 11, setting a franchise record with 54 saves in a 4-3 overtime win at San Jose. Ellis also registered 33 saves in a win over the Kings and stopped 32 shots as the Preds nipped the Ducks.
