I feel the only way to start this off is by saying “I LOVE SHIN-PADS” and “fucking unbelievable”. Andrew Shaw seems like he is always in the middle of what’s going on, whether it’s good like scoring the game winning goal in triple over-time of game one of the Stanley Cup Finals… or bad, like his 3-game suspension against the Coyotes for his “incident” with Mike Smith. He is a fire-cracker, not afraid to get in the mix even though he is listed at 5’10 180 lbs. and seems like he is going to step up as replacement rat next season for the Hawks.
Everyone knows the story now of how Shaw was passed over by every team in the league, twice, until he was eventually drafted in the 5th round (139th overall) and is now a house-hold name and fan favorite of many throughout Blackhawks Nation.
Obviously, the most prevalent memory of Shawzer’s season was taking a puck off the face early in game 6 of the Finals, then pulling a Keith-esque return on the way to the Hawks comeback cup win. But Shaw had more than a few memorable moments during the season, and during the lock-out that may seem like years ago now.
Oh yeah, the lock-out. So many of us have completely forgotten about that black-hole of a time where we forced to suffer through billionaires arguing with millionaires. But during the lock-out, Shaw was with the Rockford IceHogs where he was starting off his season with a bang.
On November 3rd, Shaw received a six game suspension (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=aoIY-Z7OlLs) for leaving the bench to join a line brawl against the Monsters. Yeah, that happened this season. After serving his six game suspension Shaw was back for only four games before receiving an additional one gamer for a boarding incident against the Wolves. During his four games between though, Shaw scored a goal in each game.
Shaw seems to always bring energy, which is great and for someone his size, it makes hockey that much more fun to watch. But he has shown like above moments where he lets his emotions get the best of him and makes some questionable team decisions.
Once the lockout was over, Shaw returned to the Blackhawks and spent most of the season with Stalberg and Bickell on the third line for the Hawks. Shaw’s production was down compared to his 37 games with the Hawks during the 11-12 season where he posted 12 G 11 A for 23 points, but during his ’13 season Shaw racked up only 15 points in 48 games.
Mutt is going to have to step up a few aspects of his game next season, including his face offs, he posted a lack-luster 44% for the season and while Bolland was no specialist, Shaw is going to need to step it up a little bit.
Shaw opened up a 5-game point streak on Jan. 30 against Minnesota with a goal in a 3-2 (SO) lose. He then put up assists in back to back games, then another goal against the Sharks and an assist against the Coyotes.
Once the playoffs started Shaw seemed to enjoy the spotlight, putting up 4 points in the Wild series including 2 assits in game 2 and a goal in game 5’s clinching victory. He also put up two goals in game 5 of the Detroit series which started their comeback after being down 3-1 in the series, including the game winner in the second period where of course, he got a tip in goal in front of the net on the Blackhawks powerplay *gasp* off a Duncan Keith shot that didn’t get blocked *gasp again*.
Shaw scored a goal in game 2 of the Kings series but, Shaw was a minus in 6 playoff games for the Hawks and lead the team in PIM during the playoffs. He scored the game winner in game one against the Bruins in triple OT and had an assist earlier in the game.
He attracted a lot of attention from Zdeno Chara in the finals and seems to relish in those roles, while I wouldn’t recommend Shaw taking on Chara, someone like Marchand seems like the obvious choice, but Shaw isn’t afraid of anything and I expect him to embrace his additional responsibilities this upcoming season. He may have a chance to crack the second line. He has shown he is a battler, but with someone of his size, durability could become an issue further down the road. But for now Mutt is just a young 22 year old, (Happy Birthday Shaw, July 20th) and is still full of that young energy. I am looking forward to seeing what he brings next season.
