Coming off of a season in which he was pretty terrible down the stretch, and even worse in the 2011-2012 postseason, many were wary of the three-year deal that Johnny Oduya signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. The results for Oduya during the 2013 season were better than what anyone had likely expected.
Oduya came to the Hawks as a guy that could move the puck pretty well and kill some penalties. The 2013 season saw him emerge on the shutdown no. 2 pairing next to Niklas Hjalmarsson for most of the year, matching up against some of the top competition.
He averaged the fourth most ice time on the team during the regular season, logging 20:31 per contest. He actually ranked second on the team in penalty kill minutes, behind only Hjalmarsson, playing 2:24 per game while shorthanded in 2013.
Despite his primarily defensive role, and a pretty even split between starting his shifts in the offensive and defensive zones, Oduya managed to put up a few points as well. He posted 12 points during the regular season, including three goals, to go along with his plus-12 rating.
It was output that he very nearly matched with a solid postseason. He wasn't quite as good as he was in the regular season, but finished with eight points, one of which was an assist on the Stanley Cup-winning goal, and another plus-12 rating.
Overall, it was a solid season for Oduya. He had his moments when he struggled, particularly against teams with a strong forecheck, but he fared very well next to Hjalmarsson for the better part of 2013. He didn't do anything extremely well, but was very solid in multiple aspects for the Blackhawks.
