Acquiring Michal Handzus from the San Jose Sharks on April 1st for a fourth round draft pick caused a bit of a stir in the Blackhawks fan world. Handzus, a 36-year-old veteran, was known as a decent centerman with some grit and a great face off win percentage, but some were skeptical he would be productive other than at face offs. Others disagreed and thought his leadership style and versatility would be a great advantage for Hawks. Obviously Handzus knew his chances of winning the Cup were better with Chicago and another reason I am sure it was thought he would be a good fit since he played for Quenneville in St. Louis, when he first came up to the NHL. Zus also had been a Hawk before, in the 2006-07 year so the familiarity would be helpful. Not many people may remember that he was here before, since he only played 8 games due to a knee injury, however, he got 8 points that season, which was pretty decent compared to other players who played way more games than Zeus that year.
Those that were skeptical of the pickup of Handzus thought since he was older, his slower play and lack of offense while with San Jose would be detrimental to the Hawks. However, once he arrived in the comfort zone he quickly changed their minds. During the regular season he scored points in five straight games from May 25 to June 2. Playing 11 games, he had 1 goal and 5 assists with the Hawks after his April arrival and 10 SOG.
After being paired with Sharp and Kane, he seemed be ignited and was extremely productive during the play offs too with three goals and 8 assists. His centering on the second line was a major reason the Hawks were so successful throughout the post season. His play on special teams was one of the reasons the Hawks penalty kill was so amazing. His assistance with face offs, as expected, was stellar during the Cup run as well, he was 4th in the NHL for face off wins. His defense was aggressive and his steady presence was noticed up and down the ice. His long reach and ability to read team play and be there when necessary was huge for the Hawks in the playoffs. He showed his veteran leadership as well apparently giving advice to his teammates that was typically spot on, according to Patrick Sharp, who also played with Zeus in Philly.
Zeus was given well earned respect for the hard work and dedication he gave the organization when Captain Johnathan Toews handed him the Cup first after the Hawks won game 6. The smile on his face as he hoisted Lord Stanley and skated around was priceless. I was extremely happy for Zeus, who was a bargain for the Hawks this year. The Hawks signed Handzus for another year and I think that is fantastic. He has the talent and experience that may help keep the younger players continuously on their game and his desire and versatility may just enable the Hawks to do something that hasn’t been done since 1998, win back to back Stanley Cup Championships.
