For the first couple years of Nick Leddy’s Blackhawks tenure, he often drew the ire of fans for his lapses in judgement and his frequent cases of the “yips.” He was rushed to the NHL due to Chicago needing immediate help on the blue line and it often showed. Fans were concerned the premature jump to the NHL caused a rather permanent developmental growth stunt. Funny how things can change in a year.
Nick Leddy took a big step forward and had a solid 2013 campaign. His postseason campaign was a bit of a flop, as he found himself benched throughout most of the Stanley Cup Final, but it was just a bad postseason. It happens. His regular season, on the other hand, was much better. Leddy still played sheltered minutes, as he started 58.5 % of his shifts in the offensive zone but he excelled in the role that he was put into. Paired with Michal Rozsival, Leddy had a solid security blanket to allow him to be more adventurous and take a few more risks he may not have otherwise taken.
Leddy saw his role on the power play expand to the tune of 8 points and averaging 2 minutes and 38 seconds of PP time/60. His one man zone entry rushes along with his work on the point made him a valuable asset to have on a PP that badly needed a QB to man the man-advantage. He wasn’t able to fully wrest Keith for the main PP QB duties but it could happen sometime next year if Keith continues to hit shinpads while on the PP.
The lockout was the best thing that could’ve happened to our mouth-breathing blueliner as it gave him time to develop his game at the AHL level; something he desperately needed to continue his growth. Once the suits shook hands over a deal and Leddy’s time with the Piggies was up, he looked generally more confident and more capable of playing to his potential.
He’s only 22 and he’s got plenty of room to grow. While 2013 was a big step for young Nicholas, he’s still got massive potential to achieve. Thankfully, with his new team friendly 2 year deal, that potential can be filled on the Blackhawks. And to think the Wild ended up with Cam Barker on the other end of this Leddy/Johnsson (RIP) deal hahahahahaha. What, you really think I’d go an entire post on Nick Leddy without making fun of Cam Barker?
