It's the final day of 2014 that can officially be considered Not Hockey Season, and that's pretty splendid news around these parts. A few real life wins should help to temper some of the agitation surrounding the roster, which is basically all we've talked about for the past six weeks. I'm not saying the Blackhawks fan base is starting to lose its mind, but it kinda feels that way. So let's get through one last Wednesday before the glorious return of hockey.

**Kris Versteeg could miss opening night with a lower body injury (SCH)

**The 23-man roster for the Blackhawks is technically set for the season, though we're still not sure how it fits into the cap based on the CapGeek numbers (Pro Hockey Talk)

**The Islanders are bringing back that terrible -- just checked, yeah, still terrible -- fisherman logo for one night on their warmup jerseys. (Newsday)

**The Coyotes were closer to moving to Seattle than we previously thought (SB Nation)

**That's some pretty fancy hardware there, Los Angeles. We're not jealous or anything. (Yahoo! Sports)

**Okay, P.K. Subban, thanks for the information (Puck Daddy)

**The No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 draft, Sam Reinhart, will play for Buffalo on opening night (Buffalo News)

**The Sabres named Brian Gionta as their new captain (Buffalo News)

**The ECHL has absorbed seven CHL teams as the hockey minor league system continues evolving (SB Nation)

**The Rangers also named their new captain, defenseman Ryan McDonagh (Pro Hockey Talk)

**It appears the Sharks are continuing to do bizarre things in San Jose (CSN Bay Area)

**Evgeni Malkin says he's 50/50 for the season opener (The Globe and Mail)

**David Krejci will start the season on IR, though it doesn't sound like the Bruins forward will be out for too long (CSNNE)

**More injuries for Columbus: the team placed Brandon Dubinsky on IR to begin the season due to a lower body injury (Blue Jackets)

**Sam Bennett may need surgery on his shoulder (Pro Hockey Talk)

**You'll want to check out Marc-Andre Fleury's new 90s-inspired helmet (SB Nation)

**Alex Ovechkin going on a "date" with a young fan is unsurprisingly adorable (CSN Washington)
