Blackhawks Prospect Watch: IceHogs stumble, Nick Schmaltz returns

Here is the weekly look at how some of the Chicago Blackhawks' prospects are performing around the globe, starting with the minor league affiliates.

Rockford

The IceHogs (15-5-1-1) started the week with a 6-1 home win over the Iowa Wild on Wednesday, before falling to the Chicago Wolves (Blues) 4-3 in overtime on Friday and 2-1 on Saturday on the road. Rockford holds just a three points lead ahead of Chicago in the Midwest Division.

Rookie defenseman Ville Pokka recorded a point in all three games in week 8. Pooka scored two goals against Iowa for his first career two-goal game, then contributed an assist in Rockford's overtime loss before tallying the lone goal in the 2-1 loss at the AllState Arena in Rosemont. The Finland native leads all IceHogs defenseman with five goals and has five goals and four assists this season.

Teuvo Teravainen, Drew LeBlanc, Dennis Rasmussen and Peter Regin also scored on Wednesday. Teravainen and Rasmussen each picked up assist as well. Rasmussen added another helper on Saturday and Tervainen on Saturday for a three-point week.

Fellow defenseman T.J. Brennan has a point in 12 of his last 14 games dating back to Oct. 31. During that span, he has three goals and 13 assists for third best in scoring in the league. Jamie Wise scored a goal in his AHL debut and defenseman Dillon Fournier picked up his first AHL point with an assist, both during Friday's game.

Goaltender Scott Darling allowed five goals and made 54 saves in two games before Michael Leighton returned from injury and stopped 39 shots on Friday.

Indy

The Fuel (4-9-2-2) dropped three straight games, including a 2-1 shootout loss in Fort Wayne on Thursday. After the loss, the Fuel dropped a 3-2 decision at home to the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday and a 2-1 game on the road to the Reading Royals on Saturday.

Leading goal-scorer Robert Czarnik forced overtime with his ninth goal of the season and added a goal in the third round of the shootout. Garett Bembridge and Rhett Bly each scored against Cincy.

NCAA, USHL, and others

Chris Calnan (F), Boston College (NCAA) - Calnan had an assist in the Golden Eagles 6-2 home loss to Minnesota on Friday. He has five goals and three assists in 13 games this season.

Anthony Louis (F), Miami Ohio (NCAA) - Louis did not play this week. He has three goals and eight assists in 14 games this season for the RedHawks.

Michael Paliotta (D), Vermont (NCAA) - Paliotta scored a point in all three games this week, including two goals. He scored a power-play goal in the Catamounts' 3-1 over UMass Amherst last Tuesday, and the eventual game-winner in a 6-3 win over Maine on Friday. He has eight assists and 13 points this season.

Nick Schmaltz (F), North Dakota (NCAA) - Schmaltz returned from missing four games due to injury in a big way with a goal in the third period to force a 2-2 overtime tie against Omaha on Friday. He also contributed an assist the next night in a 3-2 win. The freshman has two goals and eight assists in 11 games.

Luke Johnson (F), North Dakota (NCAA) - Johnson assisted Schmaltz's goal.

Tyler Motte (F), Michigan (NCAA) - Motte netted a goal in a 3-2 win over RPI on Friday and three assists in a 6-0 win the next night. Motte has five goals and four assists this season.

Vince Hinostroza (F), Notre Dame (NCAA) - Hinostroza did not register a point over two games against Union NY and Ohio State on Friday and Saturday, respectively. He has seven assists and nine points this season for the Irish.

John Hayden (F), Yale (NCAA) - Hayden tallied the opening goal in a 2-0 win over Rochester Inst. on Saturday. He has eight points (3G, 6A) this season.

Fredrik Olofsson (F), Chicago Steel (USHL) - Olofsson had an assist in each game against Bloomington. He has a career-high 18 points this season.

Matheson Iacopelli (F), Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL) - Iacopelli was held scoreless in two games this week. The 2014 third-round pick has 16 points (11G, 5A) in 20 games this season.

Ivan Nalimov (G), Admiral Vladivostok (KHL) - Nalimov has a 3.18 GAA and .890 SA over 17 games this season.

Carl Dahlstrom (D), Linkoping (SHL) - Dahlstrom played in three games this week and has a goal and assist with a -8 rating in 23 games this season.

Robin Press (D), Södertälje (Allsvenskan) - Press scored a goal and added an assist over a two-game stretch this week. He has nine goals and 15 helpers in 28 games this season.
