Matt Duchene scored to give the Colorado Avalanche a 1-0 lead after the first period against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday at United Center.

It was Duchene's team-leading 16th goal of the season, and the first score Blackhawks' goaltender Corey Crawford gave up in 155 minutes of action.

Marian Hossa looked to tie the game midway through the period. Hossa skated up the right side into the Avs zone past Francois Beauchemin, who blew a tire, but he had his shot stopped by Semyon Varlamov.

Both teams came up empty on the power play within the first five minutes of the game. Each team also recorded two shots, and the Avs added one on another penalty later in the period.

The Avs out shot the Blackhawks 12 to 9 in the opening frame.
