Michal Kempny scored his first NHL career goal in the first period against Cam Ward of the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night at PNC Arena.

Kempny, 26, is playing in his first NHL season after he was acquired last spring by Chicago. He has played primarily on the second or third defensive pairing, and has a goal and two assists in 25 games this season.

The 6-foot, 190-pound left-handed blue liner registered five goals, 16 assists in 59 regular-season games last season with Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League. He also racked up four points (two goals and two assists) in 11 postseason contests.

Kempny is the sixth Blackhawk this season to record their first NHL career goal. The other five skaters are defenseman Gustav Forsling and forwards Ryan Hartman, Vinnie Hinostroza, Tyler Motte and Nick Schmaltz. Hartman leads all Hawks rookies in scoring with six goals and 12 points.
