It’s a big day for fans of hockey and video games as the NHL 18 trial went live on the EA Access service for Xbox One. Fans on PS4 and non-subscribers to EA Access will need to wait until the game’s full release on Sept. 15, but this is still a chance to dig in for 10 hours before then.
EA already released ratings for the game’s top players, so we already knew that Patrick Kane is a 91, Duncan Keith is a 90, Jonathan Toews is an 89, and Corey Crawford is an 87. Now we get a chance to see how everyone else stacks up in the game.
One important thing to note here is that EA overhauled its rating system for NHL 18. They altered the range of ratings that are commonly given to players with an emphasis on creating greater talent variability between the game’s best players and the game’s worst players. Last year, for example, Toews was rated as a 94. He’s lost five points from his rating, and now the highest rating in the game is a 93 for Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby.
And if you’re wondering why the likes of Alex DeBrincat, Jan Rutta, and Alexandre Fortin aren’t listed here, EA can’t add players to the game until they’ve played at least one professional game, per their agreement with the NHLPA. So those guys will added after the beginning of the season.
I’ll have a lot more thoughts on NHL 18 over the coming days, as I’ll be receiving a review copy from EA soon, but in the meantime, here are the full ratings for every Blackhawk in the game.
