Earlier this month, Ryan Hartman said he circled his first game against his former team on his calendar. But it wasn’t just because the Predators forward was playing against the Blackhawks for the first time.
He was collecting rent from a former teammate.
The Blackhawks traded Hartman to the Predators last February, but he kept his three-bedroom Lincoln Park condo and leased it to Connor Murphy, reports Jason Lieser of The Chicago Sun-Times.
The former teammates have an agreement in place where Murphy only pays Hartman rent when the two teams meet. Murphy will make two more payments this season: Jan. 9 in Chicago and April 6 in Nashville.
Tuesday’s game between Chicago and Nashville will mark the first contest Hartman and Murphy will play against each other since the trade. Murphy was still recovering from offseason back surgery when the Predators defeated the Blackhawks 5-2 on Dec. 1 in Nashville.
Hartman was traded for forward Victor Ejdsell and a 2018 first- and fourth-round draft pick, who turned out to be defenseman Nicolas Beaudin and forward Philipp Kurashev. Hartman, a West Dundee native, has nine goals and four assists for the Predators.
