The Chicago Blackhawks will retain head coach Joel Quenneville and general manager Stan Bowman for the 2018-19 NHL season, team president John McDonough announced Thursday.
The announcement comes three days before the end of Quenneville’s first losing season in his illustrious 21-year career. There was speculation Bowman and Quenneville would be fired this spring after the team failed to make the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2008. The pair has brought three Stanley Cups to Chicago since 2010.
Both Bowman and Quenneville signed three-year contracts in January 2016, and the head coach has about $12 million left on his deal. Quenneville is the longest tenured coach in the NHL as no other active coach has been with his team more than five full seasons.
