The Chicago Blackhawks selected goaltender Dominic Basse, an Alexandria, Va. native, with the No. 167 overall pick in the sixth round of the NHL Draft Saturday in Vancouver.
Basse has spent the last two seasons with the Selects Hockey Academy’s 18U Midget team and is committed to continue his career at Colorado College, where he’ll join Blackhawks prospect Josiah Slavin, a 2018 seventh-round selection. But before he heads to Colorado, he could join the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms, who drafted Basse in the fourth round during Phase II of the USHL Draft in May 2018.

At 6-foot-6, Basse has plenty of size for a goaltender, and he’ll have ample time to add to his 185-pound frame. The 18-year-old posted a 1.91 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage in 42 games with Selects last season. He also won a United States Premier Hockey League Championship during that time.

Should need a little adjustment jumping to DI NCAA after spending most of his high school playing for a DC-area high school, but good size and he’s been head and shoulders above the competition for a few years.

Basse’s selection marks the second straight year that the Blackhawks have selected a goalie in the sixth round after taking Alexis Gravel at No. 162 overall last year. Other recently drafted goaltenders in the Blackhawks system include: Wouter Peeters (3rd round, 2016 draft) and Ivan Nalimov (6th round, 2014 draft).
Basse is the first goalie taken in an odd year by the Blackhawks since 2011 seventh-rounder Johan Mattsson.
