Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews will be featured on an upcoming episode of NHL Network’s Ice Time at 8 and 11 a.m. Saturday and at 9 a.m. Sunday. The episode will focus on what it takes to be a leader, the importance of being humble and the qualities needed to succeed as a captain of a NHL team.
Toews, who has been the captain of the Blackhawks since the summer of 2008, spoke with NHL Network’s Mike Johnson about how leaders often have some of the natural abilities that coaches look for in a captain, but they need to be open to evolving and learning new methods to connect with their teammates:
“From the start, it was having those qualities that coaches look for, that coaches want to see in a player. Whether it’s work ethic, coachability, wanting to learn and all those things, I think I had that. There was a huge side to being a captain that I had to learn, which is getting outside of yourself, taking yourself less seriously, but also connecting with your teammates and understanding what they’re going through and what makes a team successful.”
