Blackhawks winger Drake Caggiula will not return to Wednesday’s game against the Red Wings after taking a stick to the face by teammate Jonathan Toews, the team announced.

The injury occurred early in the first period in front of Detroit’s net as Toews’ stick came up under Caggiula’s shield and connected with his face.

Caggiula played only 3:40 minutes before exiting the game while holding his face. He has three goals and three assists in 17 games with Chicago since being acquired from the Oilers on Dec. 30. He had seven goals and 11 points in 29 games with Edmonton prior to the move.
