Blackhawks’ Drake Caggiula suffers concussion after hit by Ducks’ Rickard Rakell

New, comments

Rakell was handed a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct for the hit.

Blackhawks forward Drake Caggiula exited Wednesday night’s game in Anaheim with a concussion being crushed into the glass in the second period by Ducks forward Rickard Rakell.

Caggiula was chasing down a puck in the offensive zone when Rakell came up from behind and hit Caggiula in the back that made him go face-first into the glass. Caggiula laid on the ice for a brief moment before getting to his knees and then skating off the ice with the help of teammates Alex DeBrincat and Marcus Kruger.

Caggiula went to the dressing room with the team medical staff where was diagnosed with a concussion. Rakell was assessed a 5-minute major boarding penalty and a game misconduct for the hit.

DeBrincat scored a power-play goal 13 seconds into the penalty with a snipe from the left faceoff circle to put the Blackhawks up 1-0 just 49 seconds into the second period.

Devin Shore answered for the Ducks when poked a blocked pass by Erik Gustafsson through Corey Crawford, who was making his return from a concussion, to level it 1-1 at 4:09.

Caggiula is the fifth Blackhawks player this season to suffer a concussion, joining Artem Anisimov, Brendan Perlini, Crawford and Kruger.
