2020 NHL Stanley Cup Qualifiers: Blackhawks announce training camp roster

The Blackhawks announced their 35-man training camp roster Monday hours before the team’s camp starting at Fifth Third Arena in Chicago.

The roster consist of 30 skaters (18 forwards and 12 defensemen) and five goaltenders. Training camp rosters are limited to 30 skaters and an unlimited number of goalies before being trimmed to 28 skaters and 31 total players by July 26, when teams travel to their designated hub city.

Defensemen Calvin de Haan (right shoulder) and Brent Seabrook (right shoulder/both hips) made the roster after being out since December, while forwards Andrew Shaw (concussion) and Zack Smith (back) were not included on the roster. Shaw has been out since Nov. 30 with a concussion and Smith underwent back surgery March 6 with a three-to-four month timetable to return.

Goaltender Corey Crawford is the lone regular on the roster that did not participate in Phase 2 voluntary workouts. Crawford, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with Chicago in 2013 and 2015, stayed at his home near Montreal to maximize time with his young family, including his second son Camden, who was born in early April.

Chicago invited 12 primarily AHL players (six forwards, three defensemen, three goalies) and one non-roster player in defenseman Alec Regula, who signed an entry-level contract with the team in November after he was acquired from the Red Wings for Brendan Perlini in October. Regula, who offers plenty of size at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, was one of the top scoring defenseman in the Ontario Hockey League this past season with 60 points (27 goals, 33 assists) in 56 games for the London Knights.

The Blackhawks, the No. 12 seed in the Western Conference, will play the No. 5 Oilers in a best-of-five qualifier series in Edmonton, starting Aug. 1. The winner will advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, while the loser and the other seven teams eliminated from the qualifiers will have an equal chance (12.5 percent) at the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft in the Second Phase of the NHL Draft Lottery on Aug. 10. The 2020 NHL Draft is set for Oct. 9 and 10.
