Rockford IceHogs get shut out by Grand Rapids Griffins in 3-0 loss

It’s Rockford’s second shutout loss in the past three games and seventh this season.

The Rockford IceHogs (Blackhawks) allowed three goals in the third period in a 3-0 loss to the Grand Rapids Griffins (Red Wings) on Saturday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Dominic Turgeon won a faceoff against Garrett Mitchell then Matt Puemple fired a shot from the top of the left face-off circle past Collin Delia for a 1-0 lead at 3:49. Chris Terry scored a power-play goal from the bottom of the right circle to make it 2-0 at 15:46 then 51 seconds later Taro Hirose lifted a rebound over Delia for the 3-0 final.

Calvin Pickard made 35 saves for his third shutout this season for the Griffins (28-27-3-4), who moved into sole possession of third place in the Central Division.

Delia made 15 saves prior to Grand Rapids’ three goals, and 20 total after he had a 34-save shutout in a 4-0 home win against the Griffins on Friday night. Dylan Sikura had a game-high five shots on goal.

The IceHogs failed to capitalize on three power-play chances and are 1-for-29 in their past nine games. Rockford, which has been shut out in two of its past three games, remain in fourth place in the Central for a playoff spot.

The IceHogs finish a three-and-three weekend against the Chicago Wolves (Golden Knights) at 3 p.m. Sunday at Allstate Arena in Rosemont.
