(Editor’s note: this is the first installment of what will become a regular series here at Second City Hockey checking in on Blackhawks prospects across the hockey world. The pandemic is still affecting hockey everywhere with some leagues still yet to begin but there are plenty of Blackhawks draft picks who have been on the ice this winter.)
Perhaps the Blackhawks’ most important prospect outside of the NHL, the Blackhawks No. 17 overall pick in the 2020 draft is having a great start to his season with 7 points in 10 games for Eisbaren Berlin in the DEL. He also scored four goals in three games with Germany’s U20 team.
Reichel has had a three-game scoring streak so far this season and had a three-point game on Jan. 19 against Kolner Hale. That three-game scoring streak came to an end on Jan. 25, but Reichel has a chance to start anew on Thursday.

Reichel is in his second season with Eisbaren after scoring 24 points in 42 games last season. He’s been joined sporadically by his older brother, Thomas, but Reichel spends most of his time on the third line and power play.
Also overseas, Saarela — drafted in the fourth round (123rd overall) of the 2019 draft — has 10 points in 23 games with Ilves of the Finnish Liiga. Saarela is in his second season with Ilves after 12 points in 40 games last year.
Josiah Slavin, Dominic Basse
The Colorado College teammates are each seeing plenty of game action for the Tigers.
Slavin (seventh-round pick in the 2018 draft) has 11 points in 16 games during his sophomore season, tying him for the team lead, and has spent much of that time playing on Colorado’s top forward line. Basse, who the Blackhawks drafted in the sixth round in 2019, is just 19 years old but seeing plenty of looks in net. In 12 games, Basse has three wins with a .892 save percentage.
Alex Vlasic, Jake Wise, Drew Commeso
Boston University has had issues with COVID-19, resulting in the Terriers playing only six games. In that limited game time, Vlasic (second round, 2019) has four assists from the blue line, Wise (third round, 2018) has played in just two of those games with one assist and goaltender Drew Commesso (second round, 2020) has all five of Boston’s wins with a 5-1 record and a .917 save percentage in six starts.
Slaggert (third round, 2020) has 7 points in 12 games during his freshman season at Notre Dame.
Kaiser (fourth round, 2020), another freshman who’s playing defense for the University of Minnesota-Duluth, has 7 assists in 15 games.
In the QMJHL, Crevier (seventh round, 2020) has 6 assists in 13 games. The defenseman is in his third season with Chicoutimi.
The Blackhawks will see multiple prospects start playing competitive hockey again soon as the AHL drops the puck on Feb. 5. The IceHogs will take on the Cleveland Monsters on opening night. In their lone preseason game, the IceHogs lost to the Chicago Wolves 6-1 with Chad Krys (second round, 2016) scoring their lone tally.
The WHL and OHL are still waiting to get their 2021 seasons started as well and will have much-shortened seasons.
