The 2024-25 midseason version of Second City Hockey’s Top 25 Under 25 rankings was ranked by individual ballots submitted by SCH staffers .

No. 25 — John Mustard

Position: Left Wing

Mustard\'s had a decent debut college season for a Providence team ranked No. 7 in the country as of the first week of February. The Friars have a production-by-committee approach, with 13 players in double digits and the team\'s top producer at 20 points. Mustard is in a three-way tie for third with his 17 points and in another three-way tie for second on the team with 11 assists (fellow Blackhawks prospect Taige Harding, who won\'t appear on these rankings, also has 11 assists this season).

Never hurts to have a prospect skating on one of the top NCAA teams, even if it\'s down in the bottom six at the moment. We\'ll see if future seasons see Mustard play at a level that warrants him moving up the lineup.

No. 24 — Drew Commesso

Position: Goalie

Birth date: July 19, 2002 (22)

Acquired via: Second-round pick (46th overall) in 2020 NHL Draft

2024-25 stats: 8-12-2-2 record, 2.95 goals-against average, .896 save percentage in 23 games

Commesso made his NHL debut this season, relieving Arvid Soderblom in the third period of a game back on Dec. 12 and then starting against the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 14. He held the fort as well as he could until the dam broke in the third period, with NJ scoring four times in the final period to earn the win. He\'s spent the bulk of his season down in Rockford again, though, mostly splitting the net with Mitchell Weeks while posting numbers that are ... OK? A save percentage just under .900 and a goals-against average just under three won\'t inspire too much confidence, although the quality of the team in front of him is certainly fair to question.

The last month has been especially rough for Commesso: he allowed three goals against in four straight outings in the back half of January and then opened February by being lit up for five goals by the Central Division-leading Texas Stars. It\'s not encouraging to see Commesso\'s numbers trending in the wrong direction after going 18-16-4-2, 2.65, .906, respectively in the prior season. He was solid during the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs with a .915 save percentage in three games, but it doesn\'t appear he\'ll get a postseason look this time around unless Rockford starts winning quickly. No one\'s going to write off Commesso at this point but the hope of progress -- at least from a statistical perspective -- hasn\'t been realized this season.

No. 23 — Jack Pridham

Position: Right Wing

Birth date: Oct. 8, 2005 (19)

Acquired via: Third-round pick (92nd overall) in 2024 NHL Draft

Now for a prospect who\'s been trending up. Pridham is committed to play hockey at Boston University next season but recent changes to NCAA rules allowed him to spend this hockey season in the OHL, and this report from Ben Pope of the Sun-Times detailed the ways Pridham is using that option to his advantage:

Pridham is over a point-per-game for the Rangers this season with his 1.06 PPG rate being the best mark on the team, and it\'d be fair to assume Pridham would be among the team leader in most statistical categories were it not for his slightly delayed arrival to Kitchener. Like so many other Blackhawks prospects, speed is the most noticeable element of his game and he\'s used that speed to rack up 133 shots on goal this season, which is the No. 4 mark on the team with the three skaters in front of him all playing 14-19 more games than Pridham has.

Plenty to like about Pridham so far, and it\'ll be interesting to see if he can maintain that pace for the rest of this season and then carry it into college for the Terriers next season.

No. 22 — Samuel Savoie

Position: Left Wing

Savoie doesn\'t have a ton of offensive production to speak of, although that\'s been a team-wide problem for Rockford, which is in a four-way tie for 24th in the 32-team AHL with 125 goals scored this season. There are still things Savoie is doing on the ice that won\'t necessarily show up on the scoresheet, as LBR detailed when we checked in on the Blackhawks prospects playing for the IceHogs last month.

More production probably would\'ve helped Savoie move up this list a little bit more, but there are still signs of a future bottom-sixer in the NHL all over his game.

Savoie seems like he could be in play for a call-up come March or April, based on how many veteran forwards are shipped out by Chicago at the trade deadline.

No. 21 — AJ Spellacy

Position: Center/Right Wing

Receiving a contract offer from the Blackhawks in January was indicative of the solid, steady season Spellacy\'s had in the OHL while continuing his athletic journey from two-sport standout to possible long-term piece in Chicago. The overall story remains mostly the same for Spellacy: the physical tools are obviously there, with a combination of speed and size and strength that will raise the eyebrows of hockey executives everywhere. But combining those gifts with hockey-specific skills will continue to be the part of Spellacy\'s development that will ultimately tell his unique sports story.

No. 20 — Marek Vanacker

Position: Left Wing

Vanacker may be a little bit of a forgotten figure this season due to a handful of circumstances that includes the continued breakout season enjoyed by his teammate, Nick Lardis. Vanacker was also a late start to the season after recovering from offseason surgery, with current his production under a point-per-game, shy of the 82 points (36 G, 46 A) in 68 games (1.21 PPG) he enjoyed last season. He\'s been surging recently, though, seven goals in the last seven games, including this power-play tally:

Brantford will likely be a participant in the OHL playoffs, so plenty of time remains for Vanacker to continue racking up points and offer more evidence of why Chicago felt he was worthy of a late first-round selection in the 2024 draft.

No. 19 — Ryan Greene

Position: Center

From that 1C spot, Greene is third in goals, tied for third in assists and third in points for the Terriers this season. It\'s been a solid campaign overall for the Blackhawks second-rounder, who probably slid a bit due to not having the breakout numbers like some other prospects have. Whether Greene turns pro by the end of this hockey season is based on how far Boston goes in the NCAA postseason, since neither Chicago nor Rockford appearing to be playoff-bound this season. That\'s when we\'ll get a lot more answers to whatever lingering questions remain on Greene.

No. 18 — Landon Slaggert

Since being recalled by the Blackhawks in late January, Slaggert has continued to emulate his exact archetype as a speedy forward who\'s aggressive on the forecheck and relentless in pursuit of the puck. He impressed enough in his short Blackhawks stint thus far to earn a call-up to Chicago\'s top line alongside Connor Bedard and has been just as fierce on Chicago\'s PK:

Slaggert may never land too high on lists like this because he doesn\'t have the projected ceiling of some other prospects. But he could absolutely carve out a long-time role on Chicago\'s bottom-six and they need players who can reliably fill those roles, too. With his strong play thus far and some veterans likely being sent out by the trade deadline, Slaggert seems like he\'ll be staying up with the Hawks for the rest of this season.

No. 17 — Wyatt Kaiser

Position: Defense

Birth date: July 31, 2002 (22)

Kaiser\'s going to be an interesting player to watch over the remainder of this season and into the next one. He\'s among the older of Chicago\'s D prospects and is in the final season of his entry-level, although he\'ll almost certainly be back in Chicago next season. It does seem like there\'s been an unfairly short leash on Kaiser (and several other prospects) this season but he also hasn\'t had a massive step forward like Alex Vlasic did in his career, which resulted in Vlasic receiving a substantial pay increase before his ELC expired.

There\'s still time for that to happen with Kaiser, of course, who\'s played just 76 games in his NHL career -- roughly one-third of the way to that magical 200-game plateau for developing defenseman which conventional wisdom suggests is needed for them to fully adjust to the best hockey league on the planet. He\'ll be 23 next season, though, and the clock may start ticking a little louder on Kaiser than some of the other players on his list. It\'d be great for him -- and the Blackhawks\' long-term picture -- if he came back next season and immediately caught the eye of whomever becomes the Blackhawks\' bench boss.

No. 16 — Louis Crevier

A similar clock ticks for Crevier, who was part of the same draft class as Kaiser. But his trajectory has been pointed upward lately, with Crevier enjoying the longest NHL stint of his career at the moment. His ice time has been noticeable as well, skating 20-plus minutes in seven games this season after having one such game in the prior season. All of Crevier\'s possession metrics have taken steps forward this season, despite their being minimal change in his percentage of offensive zone starts, which all suggests he\'s been performing better defensively than he has last season.

One specific number helps paint that picture, too. During 345:49 of 5-on-5 ice time last season, Crevier was on the ice for six goals for and 23 against, a minus-17 differential. In 362:13 of 5-on-5 ice time this season, it\'s 11 for and 13 against, a minus-2 differential. He hasn\'t played since leaving the Feb. 1 game against Florida early with a concussion, though.

Here\'s hoping Crevier\'s out of concussion protocol by the end of this 4 Nations break and plays out the rest of this season in a similarly strong manner.

No. 15 — Sacha Boisvert

Position: Center

Birth date: March 17, 2006 (18)

Boisvert\'s freshman season at North Dakota has been somewhere between \"decent\" and \"good,\" as he\'s cooled off a bit in the last month with just two points -- both assists -- in the last six games. He had a very productive stretch in November and December, though, racking up 10 points (5 G, 5 A) in nine games.

Nothing to get worried about here with Boisvert, although it likely means he\'s going to be back at North Dakota for at least one more season before he turns pro. Another burst of points to end the season certainly wouldn\'t hurt matters, of course.

No. 14 — Colton Dach

Position: Left Wing

Like Kaiser above, Dach seemed to get a bit of a harsher treatment when he was called up to the NHL level, receiving a few healthy scratches for performances that weren\'t deemed acceptable on a team full of several veterans who seemed to be doing similar things without repercussions.

During his ice time in Chicago, though, Dach scored his first career goal in the way expected of him: by going to the harder portions of the ice to find space and being rewarded:

Dach has been good for Rockford this season, earning that call-up to Chicago during the season. Since returning to the IceHogs last week, Dach\'s continued his ornery ways:

He may get another look with the Blackhawks for this season ends but seems likely for a longer NHL look during the upcoming 2025-26 season.

No. 13 — Oliver Moore

Position: Center

Birth date: Jan. 22, 2005 (19)

2024-25 team: Minnesota (NCAA); Team USA (World Juniors)

2023-24 stats: 23 points (7 G, 16 A), 6 PIM, 78 SOG in 28 NCAA games; 5 points (1 G, 4 A), 3 PIM in 7 World Juniors games

The good news is that Moore just had a three-point game (1 G, 2 A) against Wisconsin, a strong outing against a top-25 team and conference foe. And that\'s a good place to start because everything else about Moore\'s season has been a touch on the side of underwhelming. He hasn\'t stood out quite as much as one may have hoped this season for Minnesota, and the same could be said for his time with Team USA at the World Juniors. He can still fly, of course, and may be one of the faster skaters in the entire NHL whenever he arrives there.

At the moment, Moore\'s ceiling doesn\'t seem to include a top-six role at the NHL level after that being some of the early forecasts for him. There seems to be an NHL-level skater in there, though, perhaps in more of a middle-six role, though. All of those questions will start getting an answer soon, because Moore is probably playing out his final couple of months of college hockey right now. Chicago\'s final game is April 15. The NCAA postseason regional are set for March 27-30 with the Frozen Four on April 10 & 12. That\'ll all determine how soon we see Moore (and another Minnesota skater) with the Hawks.

No. 12 — Lukas Reichel

Position: Center/Wing

Birth date: May 17, 2002 (22)

An observation: Reichel\'s current stat line of five goals and 11 assists is exactly the same as his stat line from the 2023-24 season. The difference? He\'s done that in 17 fewer games (65 last season, 48 this season) while his average ice time decreased from 14:07 last season to 12:17 this season. So Reichel\'s been more productive this season despite a decrease in ice time. Take it a step further and Reichel\'s production rate during 5-on-5 hockey is currently at 1.65 points per 60 minutes, which is in line with the 1.77 he posted during that 23-game stint at the end of the 2022-23 season when we all probably got a little over-excited by what Reichel was doing.

Still, Reichel\'s been objectively better this season than his pretty terrible 2023-24 campaign and there still seems to be a guy worthy of a long-term NHL future in there somewhere. The tricky part is figuring out where he can fit into the lineup and continue this upward trajectory. With Reichel under contract through next season, that\'ll be one of the key challenges facing Chicago\'s next head coach.

No. 11 — Ethan Del Mastro

Position: Defense

Birth date: January 15, 2003 (22)

Injuries prompted a call-up for Del Mastro in late January, although he\'s mostly been an AHL player this season, where he continues to be one of the top blue-liners for the IceHogs. With Del Mastro frequently skating alongside the offensively gifted Kevin Korchinski this season in Rockford, his offensive numbers have taken a bit of a hit while his blue-line partner handles that end of the ice and Del Mastro hangs back as the free safety. That he\'s displayed such versatility could bode well for his long-term hockey future.

Depending on what happens at the trade deadline, there may or may not be space for Del Mastro in Chicago to receive another NHL call-up. Either way, it feels like this should be the final season when Del Mastro spends more time in Rockford than Chicago, as he should probably start making his case for a bigger role with the Blackhawks come training camp in September.
