Blackhawks prospect Alex DeBrincat ties 40-year-old OHL record with 50-goal season
The 2016 second-round pick becomes the first U.S.-born player in league history to record three 50-goal seasons.
Chicago Blackhawks prospect Alex DeBrincat continues to make history in the Ontario Hockey League.
The 2016 second-round pick scored his 50th and 51st goals of the season on Monday against the Oshawa Generals. DeBrincat is the first U.S.-born player to score 50 goals in three consecutive seasons and the first since Dale McCourt did it with the Hamilton Fincups in the OMJHL from 1974-77 (the OMJHL later became the OHL).

It’s not the only piece of OHL history DeBrincat has captured this season. He became Erie’s all-time leading goal scorer earlier this month and is in the top five in career scoring among U.S.-born players. DeBrincat has 312 career points, and is 14 points shy of Bobby Ryan for third place.
DeBrincat is also two goals away from surpassing Rob Schremp (Mississauga/London, 2002-06) as the leading American goal-scorer in OHL history.
The Hawks signed DeBrincat to a three-year entry-level contract Nov. 7, 2016. He’s eligible to be called by up the Hawks once Erie’s season is over, although it’s hard to see him getting a NHL call so quickly. If the Hawks do want to see more from him, it’s more likely he’ll be sent to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League.
