Here's a look at the Blackhawks' playoff positioning heading into Friday's games.

The Chicago Blackhawks have eight games left in the regular season and are battling for playoff positioning. Each day until the end of the regular season, we'll breakdown their chances at a spot and seeding in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Thursday's results

Chicago defeated Dallas in a shootout to extend its Central Division and Western Conference lead to eight points over second-place Minnesota, who fell to Philadelphia on Thursday.

St. Louis eliminated Vancouver with a win, but wasn’t able to pull away from Nashville, who also recorded a win over a Pacific Division team — Calgary. Edmonton used a wild five-goal third period to top Colorado to create a three-point cushion over the Flames for third place in the division. Calgary now holds the top wild-card spot by just one point over Nashville.

Friday's scoreboard watch

If the playoffs were to begin Wednesday, the Hawks would be the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and play the second wild-card team — Nashville.

There are four games on tap with half of them featuring Western Conference teams. San Jose visits Dallas and Anaheim hosts Winnipeg. A win for either Pacific team would be a boost in seeding as the Sharks hold a two-point lead over the Ducks for the top spot in the Pacific.
