Blackhawks defenseman Jan Rutta learns English by watching Netflix
The Czech blueliner is learning English in the best way possible.
Jan Rutta, a Czech defenseman, is adjusting well to his new surroundings in North America with the Chicago Blackhawks. The biggest hurdle for most foreign players to coming overseas to play in the NHL is communicating with teammates and learning English. Rutta has used his time off the ice to learn the new language in the laziest way possible by watching Netflix.
Jan Rutta speaks English very well. I asked him where he picked it up: "You’ve got Netflix, right? Netflix doesn’t have Czech subtitles."

But what’s he watching? “Game of Thrones,” “Breaking Bad,” “Narcos,” “Longmire,” “Trailer Park Boys,” or something else?
Rutta is in the mix to make the Hawks’ main roster out of training camp. The 27-year-old blue liner scored in Chicago’s preseason opener at Columbus, and has recorded five shots on goal, four blocked shots and two takeaways in three preseason games. He signed a one-year deal this summer with Chicago.
