Blackhawks European prospect update, 11/11: Kantserov, Frondell flourishing

A quick glance to the other side of the world to see what\'s been going with Blackhawks prospects playing in Europe, starting off with one of the more intriguing players in the Chicago system.

Roman Kantserov (RW/C) | Metallurg Magnitogorsk (KHL)

Stats: 27 points (16 G, 11 A), 34 PIM, 50 SOG, 32.0 S%, 17:25 ATOI in 25 games

Kantserov leads the KHL in goals and is second in points, producing at over a point-per-game rate while just a few months removed from his 21st birthday. The things Kantserov has been doing over in Russia have led to a near daily routine of waking up in the morning to various social media clips of whatever highlight-reel play Kantserov pulled off while we were all asleep:

Providing some context for what Kantserov is doing despite his age: clicking back through the leading scorers in the KHL primarily finds players in their late 20s or early 30s. There are only a handful of seasons in the ballpark of Kantserov\'s age and production from this decade: Ivan Demidov put up 49 (19 G, 30 A) in his age-19 season back in 2024-25, Alexander Nikishin had 55 (11 G, 44 A) in 65 games during 2022-23 (age-21 seasons) and 56 (17 G, 39 A) in 67 games the following season, while Kirill Kaprizov put up 62 (33 G, 29 A) in 57 games during his age-22 season in 2019-20.

At a very minimum, Kantserov is proving he\'s going to worth an NHL look when his KHL contract expires come May. And every goal the Russian forward scores will only heighten the soaring expectations for this gifted offensive talent.

Anton Frondell (LW/C) | Djugårdens IF (SHL)

Stats: 12 points (8 G, 4 A), 4 PIM, 32 SOG, 25.0 S%, in 17 games

Frondell has cooled a bit from his red-hot start in the SHL, although 12 points in 17 games remains an admirable amount of production for an 18-year-old playing in a league largely comprised of players in their 20s and 30s.

Frondell has been bounced up and down the lineup in Sweden and was even a healthy scratch at one point, although all indications are that\'s just an effort by Djugardens to keep the 18-year-old fresh for the long haul of a hockey season. He\'s also bounced between center and wing, with more of his production coming on the outside than at the pivot. Regardless of where he\'s been suiting up, though, Frondell has been a noticeable player on the ice, which is what matters most in the present.

Data on expected goals is popping up online for the SHL and it only further adds to the argument that Djugardens is better when Frondell is on the ice (he\'s the datapoint farthest to the top and right in the image below):

Frondell also notched a pair of goals while playing for Sweden in a tune-up game ahead of this year\'s World Juniors, where Frondell could be playing a starring role for his country:

So far, so good from the 2025 No. 3 overall pick.

Jiri Felcman (C) | Langnau Tigers (NL)

Stats: 7 points (1 G, 6 A), 6 PIM in 21 games

Felcman had a cup of coffee with Rockford on an ATO at the end of the 2023-24 season (without appearing in any games) but has been in Switzerland since. This season, the Czech native has a goal and six assists through the early portions of the season.

Earlier this year, Kyle Davidson told Ben Pope of the Sun-Times that Felcman was still on a longer road to a possible NHL future than most prospects, although better skating from the 6-foot-4 forward was a positive step in that direction. Still seems like a fairly quiet season overall for the 2023 third-round pick (No. 93 overall).

Riku Tohila (C) | JHT (Suomi-sarja)

Stats: 12 points (7 G, 4 A), 14 PIM in 12 games

There isn\'t a lot of information out there on Tohila and the primary reason for including him in this update is to point out that, as indicated on the Blackhawks\' Cap Wages page , the team has until June 1, 2026 to sign Tohila before their exclusive rights expire. Based on the last few years -- he\'s currently in the third tier of professional hockey in Sweden -- it\'s looking extremely unlikely that the Blackhawks will be doing so with this seventh-round pick (No. 199 overall) from 2022.

Joel Svensson (LW/C) | Oskarshamn (Allsvenskan)

Stats: 6 points (2 G, 4 A), 27 PIM in 15 games

Svensson had a four-game stint in the SHL last season with Vaxjo but has spent all of this hockey season down in Allsvenskan, which is the second-tier professional league in Sweden. Production there has been modest for the 2024 fifth-rounder (No. 138 overall), with his two goals highlighted in the clips below:

We\'ll keep an eye out for any upticks in production that\'ll be necessary for Svensson to begin standing out more prominently on prospect radars.

Ilya Kanarsky (G) | AKM Tula Region (VHL)

Stats: 2-6-5 record, 2.48 goals-against average, .929 save percentage in 14 games

Chicago\'s final pick of the 2025 NHL Draft has had a strong start in the VHL, basically the Russian equivalent of the AHL with a GAA under 2.5 and a save percentage just shy of .930. His performance hasn\'t led to many wins for an AKM Tula Region team sitting in 28th place of the 32-team league -- but it appears that cannot be pinned on Kanarsky at the moment.
