Blackhawks European prospect update, 2/20: Kantserov, Frondell still shining

Finishing our tour of the hockey world, we hop across the pond to check in on the Blackhawks prospect playing outside of North America.

Roman Kantserov (RW/C) | Metallurg Magnitogorsk (KHL)

Stats: 55 points (30 G, 25 A), 55 PIM, 139 SOG, 21.6 S%, 18:10 ATOI in 52 games

Nothing\'s really changed about Kansterov since we last caught up with the young Russian forward: he\'s still putting together one of the best KHL seasons ever for a player of his age. He remains over a point-per-game pace and his 30 goals top the KHL, three ahead of the nearest players who are tied at 27 and have played several more games than Kantserov (old friend sighting: Dylan Sikura is tied for eighth at 22!). The last time a player scored 30-plus KHL goals in his age-21 season was Kirill Kaprizov back in 2018-19, and he ended that season with 30 in 57 games, so there\'s time for Kantserov to push the bar even higher. Kaprizov continues to be the name most frequently mentioned when Kansterov\'s name comes up because that\'s the best comparable for what Kantserov is doing at this age -- and Kaprizov recently signed the richest contract in NHL history.

If data-based projections are your thing, Kantserov\'s potential path should offer plenty of encouragement:

There\'s isn\'t much more to be gleaned from this season on Kantserov: he\'s clearly on a path towards the NHL and we\'ll see how much of his KHL success translates over here when that time comes. The main question now is when that\'ll happen. Metallurg is the top team in the KHL standings and its final regular-season game is on March 20. The Gragarin Cup playoffs begin soon after and weren\'t decided until late May last year. A deep postseason run for Metallurg would mean we won\'t see Kantserov over here until next season at the earliest. An upset in the first round or two could change that timeline, though.

Anton Frondell (C/LW) | Djugården IF (SHL)

Stats: 22 points (15 G, 7 A), 14 PIM, 74 SOG, 20.3 S%, in 18 games

After his strong showing at the World Juniors , Frondell\'s hockey season continues with the modest production that is to be expected from a teenager playing in the adult-heavy SHL, as his 15 goals are the most by any teenager this season.

The most consistent spot for Frondell in the Djurgarden lineup has been on the left wing of the second line, typically with old friend Marcus Kruger at center:

It\'s been a good season for Frondell overall and, similar to Kantserov, the only question left is when he\'ll make his way to Chicago. Djugarden\'s regular season ends on March 14 and it currently sits ninth in the league standings, with the top 10 teams making it into the SHL playoffs. An early postseason exit could have Frondell arrive in Chicago before the 2025-26 season ends.

Jiri Felcman (C) | Langnau Tigers (NL)

Stats: 19 points (2 G, 17 A), 8 PIM in 46 games

Felcman has continued with modest production this season in Switzerland and the 2023 third-round pick (No. 93 overall), although Elite Prospects had him labeled as one of the players with stock rising during the second half of the season:

Apparently that ranking was largely due to Felcman being bumped up to the top six for Langnau and he\'s also seen some time on the second power-play unit, according to this report (with an assist from Google translate).

Felcman turns 21 in April, so the book is far from closed on him. But he\'ll probably need to do more during the rest of this season or in the one ahead to catch the attention of anyone in Chicago.

Riku Tohila (C) | KeuPa HT (Mestis)

Stats: 7 points (1 G, 6 A), 10 PIM in 25 games

This will be the final time we include Tohila on here, as thes seventh-round pick (No. 199 overall) from 2022 moved down to the second tier of hockey in Finland and hasn\'t produced much there. There\'s no reason to believe an NHL contract is in his future.

Joel Svensson (LW/C) | Oskarshamn (Allsvenskan)

Stats: 15 points (5 G, 10 A), 31 PIM in 45 games

Svensson remained in Allsvenskan this season, the second-tier league of professional hockey in Sweden. His production was decent but nothing that\'ll make anyone too excited about a potential NHL future here. Not much else to share on the 2024 fifth-round pick (No. 138 overall).

Ilya Kanarsky (G) | AKM Tula Region (VHL)

Stats: 7-15-8 record, 2.64 goals-against average, .922 save percentage in 32 games

Like our last update on Kanarsky, his numbers continue to look solid in the VHL -- Russia\'s second-tier professional league -- and he\'s helped his team move from 28th in the league standings when we stopped by this league in November to 22nd as of this writing. There\'s still a significantly long road between where Kanarsky is now and the NHL, but the seventh-round pick (No. 194 overall) from 2025 is having a decent enough season to remain on radars for now.
