Blackhawks European prospect update, 5/12: Final check-ins on Kantserov, Frondell

Seasons across Europe have finally wrapped up for all of the Hawks prospects involved over there, so let\'s take one last cruise through the hockey leagues overseas, starting with the name on the tip of everyone\'s lips these days, it seems.

Roman Kantserov (RW/C) | Metallurg Magnitogorsk (KHL)

Stats: 64 points (36 G, 28 A), 57 PIM, 173 SOG, 20.8 S%, in 63 regular season games; 8 points (4 G, 4 A) in 15 postseason games

Kantserov was flat out incredible in the KHL this season. He led the league with 36 goals in the regular season and was tied for ninth in points at 64. Since his team\'s postseason run ended last week, all of the news points towards his signing with the Blackhawks as a matter of \"when\" and no longer \"if.\" Ben Pope of the Sun-Times reported late last week that Kantserov\'s KHL contract has been terminated, so he\'s free to sign with the team that drafted him in the second round (44th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft.

We\'ll have a much deeper dive on Kantserov up at the site later on this morning/afternoon, so no need for much exploration here. There appears to be a pretty talented kid on his way to the Chicago roster for next season, although there are sure to be growing pains -- he\'ll turn 22 in September -- as Kantserov attempts to translate his point-producing ways to the best hockey league in the world.

Anton Frondell (C/LW) | Djugården IF (SHL) | Chicago Blackhawks (NHL)

Stats: 28 points (20 G, 8 A), 16 PIM, 99 SOG, 20.2 S%, in 43 SHL games; 9 points (3 G, 6 A), 4 PIM, 36 SOG, 8.3 S% IN 12 NHL games

Frondell ended his SHL season with 20 goals in 43 games, leaving him in a five-way tie for seventh in the SHL, noting that the other four in that tie were between the ages of 26 and 35 while Frondell remains a teenager following his 19th birthday last Thursday. That kind of production is just a small part of why Chicago immediately imported the Swedish forward when his European season ended, and Frondell turned in a strong display during the 12 games he skated with the Hawks at the end of this NHL season.

That smaller sample doesn\'t provide a worthwhile sample for any sort of deep dive, and the team was so bad collectively during those games that it likely skews some of the numbers in a negative direction. But the overwhelming majority of reviews from people who watched Frondell closely during that 12-game stretch came away with positive impressions and it\'ll be very interesting to see how Frondell fares next season, with an entire summer of preparation ahead of him alongside the knowledge that he\'s expected to be a full-time NHLer come October.

For a few quick clips, here\'s Frondell picking up his first NHL point with this perfect pass to Ilya Mikheyev that sparked a mini-breakaway:

And here\'s his first NHL goal:

Frondell\'s not quite done with hockey this season, either: he\'ll be skating for Sweden in the IIHF World Championships later his month, alongside teammate Arvid Soderblom.

Jiri Felcman (C) | Langnau Tigers (NL) | Rockford IceHogs (AHL)

Stats: 20 points (3 G, 17 A), 10 PIM in 52 NL games; 2 points (2 A) in 7 AHL games

Felcman remains a bit off the radar compared to most other Hawks prospects, and the 6-foot-4, 198-pound forward had just a lone goal in his final six games with Langnau this season. But the Swiss-born Felcman impressed enough to sign with the Hawks in late March and appear in seven games with the IceHogs, picking up a pair of assists. The first was tallied with this nifty pass during a 2-on-1:

Felcman even saw time on Rockford\'s top line by season\'s end:

Felcman turned 21 in April, so the 2023 third-round pick (93rd overall) remains on the younger side with time to develop. Receiving a contract offer from the Hawks was a sign that he\'s on the right track but he\'ll need to post a big season with Rockford in 2026-27 to start drawing consideration for the long-term picture here.

Joel Svensson (LW/C) | Oskarshamn (Allsvenskan)

Stats: 20 points (6 G, 14 A), 31 PIM in 51 games

Svensson finished up his season in the second tier of Swedish hockey with five points (1 G, 4 A) over the final six games. In the postseason, he added a goal and an assist in six games. Below appears to be the playoff goal scored by Svensson, which was an OT winner:

And that\'s about all there is to share on Chicago\'s fifth-round pick (138th overall) from 2024. He turned 21 in April so him playing a full season in a second-tier league without anything significant to note suggests that Svensson is slowly drifting away from any future in North America.

Ilya Kanarsky (G) | AKM Tula Region (VHL)

Stats: 7-17-8 record, 2.67 goals-against average, .922 save percentage in 35 games

Kanarsky played in a few more games since our last update, adding a couple of losses to his season record for an AKM Tula team that largely toiled near the bottom of the standings of the VHL, Russia\'s second-tier league. There\'s still a long, long way -- both literally and figuratively -- between the 2025 seventh-round pick and any sort of future with this franchise.
