Marian Hossa, Jonathan Toews not expected to play in preseason

Marian Hossa and Jonathan Toews won’t play in the Chicago Blackhawks final two preseason games, coach Joel Quenneville told reporters following Tuesday’s practice.

Quenneville cited Hossa and Toews both playing so much (six games apiece) in the World Cup of Hockey, as to why they won’t hit the ice until the Hawks’ regular season opener Oct. 12 against the St. Louis Blues.

Toews scored three goals with two assists for Team Canada. One of the 28-year-old’s two assists set up the game-winner by Brad Marchand to give Canada a 2-1 win over Hossa and Team Europe in the first World Cup since 2004. Canada won the best-of-three final 2-0.

Hossa tallied Europe’s lone goal against Canada in the round-robin round. The 37-year-old forward played in Europe’s top-6 throughout the tournament. He posted 13 goals and 33 points in 64 games last season.

The Hawks play Detroit on Thursday and its preseason finale Saturday in St. Louis.
