Blackhawks’ Marian Hossa: ‘I will not play hockey anymore’

Chicago Blackhawks winger Marian Hossa will hang up his skates.

“I will not play hockey anymore,” Hossa told Slovakia newsoutlet Novy cas. “I have a valid contract with Chicago for the next three years, but I have only one health and it does not allow me to return.”

Hossa, 39, missed the 2017-18 NHL season due to a progressive skin disorder, meaning he’s allergic to his hockey equipment.

The Hawks can continue to put Hossa on long-term injured reserve, but a trade is also a likely option. He’s signed for three more years with a $5.275 million salary cap hit. His actual salary is comes out to be a little more than $1 million per year for the rest of his contract, which is a figure that could help a team reach the cap floor.

Last week, Hossa put his Gold Coast condo up for sale, and he says his family plans to move back to Slovakia. He also suggested taking a job with the Hawks organization once his contract expired. It’s not clear what role he would pursue.

Hossa won three Stanley Cups with the Hawks after falling in back-to-back Stanley Cup finals with Pittsburgh and Detroit. He racked up 525 goals and 609 assists in 1,309 career NHL games with the Senators, Thrashers, Penguins, Red Wings and Hawks.
