Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane says he’s ‘too old’ to have playoff mullet

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane and his playoff mullet are a tradition unlike any other. But, it appears Kane has decided he’s “too old” to have a mullet — complete with racing stripes etched onto the side of his head — and will stick with just a playoff beard this postseason.

Kane, 28, has grown a mullet in each of the Hawks’ last three Stanley Cup victories since 2010. He has gone to Preiti Barber Shop on North Rose Street in Franklin Park for the signature cut. It’s a tradition Kane has done since his junior hockey days.

“I thought it’d be cool to continue it in the NHL because I wasn’t able to grow a beard my first couple of seasons,” Kane told the Chicago Tribune in May 2015. “It’s pretty cool to see how it’s become so popular.

“One of those things. I went with it my first year and we ended up winning a Cup, so I figured I’d do it every season since then.”

Kane has scored 49 goals and 121 points in 123 career playoff games, including 19 points in 2013 en route to winning the Conn Smythe as the Stanley Cup Playoffs most valuable player.

Kane led Chicago in goals (34), assists (55) and points (89) in 82 games this season. Chicago opens their quest for a fourth championship in eight years against Nashville on Thursday at United Center. Kane’s mullet might not be in attendance.
