Blackhawks prospect Dennis Gilbert, Notre Dame advance to 2017 Frozen Four

Chicago Blackhawks prospect Dennis Gilbert and Notre Dame upset No. 2 seed UMass-Lowell on Sunday to win the Northeast Regional and earn a berth in the Frozen Four.

It’s Notre Dame’s third Frozen Four appearance and first since 2011. The Fighting Irish’s lone semifinal win was a 5-4 victory over rival Michigan in 2008 before falling to Boston College in the national championship game.

This year’s Frozen Four will be April 6 and April 8 at United Center in Chicago. It’s the first time the Frozen Four will be at United Center.

Gilbert, a 2015 third-rounder by the Blackhawks, had zero goals and 22 assists in 37 regular-season games. He did not record a point in Notre Dame’s upset of No. 1 seed Minnesota in the opening round or against UMass-Lowell.

Notre Dame will face the winner of top overall seed Denver and Penn State. The Hawks could be guaranteed a prospect in the title game if Denver advances with defenseman Blake Hillman.
