Chicago Blackhawks forward prospect Tim Soderlund is leaving Buffalo, New York, with a World Junior Championship silver medal.
The 2017 fourth-rounder and Sweden fell 3-1 to Canada in the gold medal game at the prestigious under-20 tournament Friday at KeyBank Center.
Soderlund scored a shorthanded goal in the second period of Sweden’s loss.

He finished the tournament with five points (three goals, two assists) in seven tournament games.
With the win, Canada improves to 6-0 against Sweden in World Juniors gold medal games. It’s Canada’s first World Juniors gold since 2015 when it beat Russia in Toronto.
Soderlund wasn’t the only Chicago prospect playing in the medal round. Defenseman Jakub Galvas and the Czech Republic fell short of a bronze medal in a 9-3 loss to the United States in the bronze medal game. Galvas had two assists in six games during the tournament.
Chicago had three other prospects compete in the tournament that didn’t reach the medal round with their respective teams. Russian forwards Artur Kayumov (2016 second round) and Andrei Altybarmakyan (2017 third round) and Finnish defenseman Henri Jokiharju (2017 first round) were bounced in the quarterfinals after five games.
Kayumov matched Soderlund’s production, while Jokiharju had two goals and two assists. Altybarmakyan had three points (one goal, two assists).
The 2019 World Juniors will be played Dec. 26, 2018, to Jan. 5, 2019, in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. It will be the second time Vancouver has been the primary host of the tournament and the first time that Victoria has hosted in any capacity.
