5 Blackhawks prospects advance to 2018 World Junior Championships quarterfinals

Five Chicago Blackhawks prospects will continue their quest to win a gold medal for their country in the quarterfinals Tuesday at the World Junior Championships in Buffalo, New York.

Defensive prospects Henri Jokiharju (Finland) and Jakub Galvas (Czech Republic) will meet in the first quarterfinal. Jokiharju’s four points are tied for second among defenseman in the tournament. The Finnish defenseman scored a goal against Canada in his World Juniors debut and also found the back of the net against Denmark. He added two assists against the Danes to be named Finland’s player of the game. Galvas has one helper in the tournament.

The Finland-Czech Republic winner will take on Canada-Switzerland winner in the semifinal round Thursday.

Forward Tim Soderlund and Sweden will face off against Slovakia. Soderlund scored his only goal of the tournament in the third period during Sweden’s 7-2 win over Switzerland in the preliminary round. He has a goal and an assist in the tournament.

The Sweden-Slovakia winner will meet the Russia-United States winner in the semifinals.

Russia features two Hawks prospects in Artur Kayumov and Andrei Altybarmkyan. Kayumov’s five points are the most among Hawks prospects in the tournament and rank fourth among all players. He has scored three goals, including the game-winner against Switzerland, along with two assists. Altybarmakyan has two helpers.
