Blackhawks recall Spencer Abbott from AHL Rockford

The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled forward Spencer Abbott from the Rockford IceHogs, the team announced Tuesday. The move comes after the Hawks assigned Tyler Motte to the AHL earlier in the day, which shouldn’t be surprising based on his recent performance.

Abbott, 28, recorded 21 points in 30 games with Rockford this season. He currently leads the IceHogs with eight goals. He spent last season with Frolunda HC of the SHL after playing three seasons for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. Abbott played one game with the Maple Leafs in the 2013-14 season.

The Blackhawks could use some offensive punch, which might explain their move to call up Abbott. He’s put up numbers in the AHL, and could potentially provide some production in the bottom six that we haven’t seen from Motte recently. There’s minimal risk given that Abbott could be waived and removed from the roster if he doesn’t produce.

In the meantime, Abbott’s promotion is interesting. It also signals the latest time that the Blackhawks have passed on using former first-round pick Mark McNeill, and his career continues to be surrounded by questions. The Hawks could use some life in the bottom six, and maybe Abbott can provide it.
