Blackhawks sign prospect Chad Krys to entry-level contract

Chad Krys decided to forego his senior season at Boston University and sign a three-year entry-level contract worth $925,000 annually with the Blackhawks on Monday. The left-handed defenseman will join the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL for the remainder of the season on an amateur tryout agreement, according to Scott Powers of The Athletic.

Krys scored eight goals and 20 points in 30 games during his junior season. Krys, who turns 21 in April, racked up 20 goals and 58 points in 105 career games for the Terriers.

Krys was one of three draft picks by the Blackhawks in the second round in 2016. Chicago used the two picks it acquired from the Andrew Shaw deal with the Canadiens on winger Alex DeBrincat (39th overall) and Krys (45th). The Blackhawks then selected winger Artur Kayumov (50th) with a pick acquired in the Teuvo Teravainen trade with the Hurricanes.

DeBrincat has established himself as an elite scorer in the NHL, while Kayumov is one of the best young players in Russia’s KHL.

Prior to this season, Krys was one of three defensemen among the 16 selected in the first two round in 2016 to have not signed. Krys’ BU teammate and Nashville prospect Dante Fabbro and Columbus’ Andrew Peeke of Notre Dame were the others. Fabbro also sign Monday, while Peeke remains unsigned as the Fighting Irish begin NCAA tournament play Friday against Clarkson in the Manchester Regional.

The Blackhawks have signed five players from their nine-player 2016 draft class. Kayumov, goaltender Wouter Peeters, winger Mathias From and defenseman Jake Ryczek remain unsigned.
